Life / Inappropriately Touching a Baby - What are the cultural Norms in Poland? [12]

I was recently shocked by a visit to my friend's place. She was changing the baby, when Dziadek came over 'oh so cute baby!' and kiss-kiss-kiss.... little kisses right on the baby's Penis!!!

This type of behavior is disgusting to me and all my friends who I mentioned this to (including Polish friends who did not think it was a normal Polish thing, and were also disgusted).

Have you ever heard of similar affectionate actions towards babies or children in Poland? What are the polish norms regarding lovey-dovey touchey-feeley behaviour with children? Where is the line drawn?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this, but the only conclusion I can come to is that Dziadek is a super-creepy molester.... :/

Real Estate / Buying the "Grunt" in a mieszkanie in Poland - How does that work? [2]

I'm looking at buying a small underground parking garage, and part of it has already had the 'grunt' (ground) purchased from the Urzad. The other part doesn't?

Anybody have any experience with this? The seller explained that I didn't have to buy this grunt but can 'rent' it from the city indefinitely

Travel / Pros and Cons about Driving from Wroclaw to Krakow [6]

I know this drive well ;) do the math for your car Gas will probably cost you minimum 100zl + 30zl or so in tolls. / 4 30 zl each

Polskibus.com is also about the same price 20-28zl per person each way. (slightly slower of course) but will drop you right in Krakow Centre.

If you do drive here is a parking map:
zikit.krakow.pl/mapa-strefy-platnego-parkowania.html

although parking is free on Sunday in city and maybe saturday too?

I own 3 cars in Krakow and parking is dodgy at best haha - Be prepared to drive around a lot searching for a parking spot.

Real Estate / Extra costs when buying a flat in Poland [13]

you are looking at about 10k zlotych to the notariusz for taxes and legal fees, + similar to the agent.

DO NOT sign their agreement forms when looking at flats! The bastards always pressure you to sign and have a 3% or so commission "oh yes we will negotiate it later"

Better to change it to 0.5% and they can negotiate up from there ;)

3% for basically showing a flat and posting some free ads on OLX? you have got to be kidding me.

Polish real estate agents are one of the professions here that provide very very little value or use

Real Estate / Living in a Flat that is rented as "Not habitable" - what are the legalities in Poland? [2]

What kind of issues can you run into in renting out a flat that for all intensive purposes is a residential flat, but for whatever reason is currently zoned as a "lokal" "biuro" or other type of business use, but not as a residence.

If you have a rental contract signed explicitly stating that it is Business space being rented, and not for living in - is this enough in the eyes of the Polish law to absolve the landlord of any liability?

I'm thinking like worst case scenario you rent a flat and live in it, and it burns down, yet it was technically not allowed to live there in the first place.

Real Estate / Buying a freehold house in Poland - legal contract? How does the deposit work - to Lawyer 'in trust' or? [6]

As title states - does anybody have a good legit contract for buying a freehold house?

...and of more interest - how does the deposit process legally work here in Poland - i.e. if you are dealing with a legit realtor, seller, and a lawyer?

Does the lawyer get the deposit 'in trust' until the deal closes?

Can you put conditions on the deposit like home inspection or financing?

just curious about the actual deposit process here ... I don't feel like loosing thousands of zlotych here if things get shady....

Real Estate / Is it even possible to get a house with meldunek as a student in Poland? [21]

2 things before we over-complicate this:

why not get your girlfriend to just rent the place in her name?

or..

take your Rental Contract to the meldunek office and just get a meldunek that way? Super easy and that's all they need (I just got a meldunek within the last month).

Work / 20 years old moving to Poland from Canada, is it hard for me to get a job in Poland? [20]

Currently programmers are in big demand all around the world.

Toilet cleaners are in demand too, but who would want to work either job?

VIX - I will give you the real deal, as someone who has been in your Exact Position ;)

#1 ) save your 7 grand a year tuition + books +.. and skip the worthless Bachelor degree from a Canadian University

#2 ) Print up a CV and choose your favorite degree moze... "Bachelor of Art History" or Sociology lol (you can wikipedia a few articles to brush up on the basics)

#3) Beef your CV with some fake teaching experience (you taught at a summer camp, coached basketball, blah blah blah)

#4) Choose a "TESL" certificate of your liking - add to CV.

You are ready! Fly over and start hustling your CV, networking. Language schools will give you offers mostly based on the fact that you are a native speaker alone. They will not do much if any background or CV fact checking.

how do I know? I am highly educated and receive offers all the time based on my beautiful Native accent, they couldn't care less about what degree I have, whether I have some BS tesel certificate or not.

good luck! and hurry - those winnipeg winters can be cold ;)

Law / Right Hand Drive cars in Poland 'indefinitely' but not registered - doable? [21]

As I understand it you cannot register a RHD car in Poland now.

What about driving one indefinitely with your Umowa, valid OC, and even possible to get a Polish przeglad for one?

I am curious because cars are so bloody cheap in the UK, would be nice to bring home a souvenir :)

Law / Registering an old, classic car with No Paperwork - How? [7]

Law / Selling a car without putting it in your name - Multiple Umowas - what's the deal? [25]

Maluch:this is normal practice in Poland
No it isn't. Everyone is afraid of driving a car without OC because of paying compensation in case of accident.

Peter - I never mentioned anything about OC at all. I was talking about having multiple Umowas (the title of this thread). It has always had OC - I wouldn't touch a vehicle without it (I have heard about the hassles and complications).

inWroclaw - yes that was a typo - no fines or anything. she didn't care that i had never been registered in previous owner's name.

Study / Where I should study journalism(in Poland ) [32]

Study sciences, especially geological engineering, petroleum engineering or biomedical engineering.

lol your thinking is extremely old school and narrow-minded. Math is boring! I remember years ago a Computer science degree was the big thing, "study computer science if you want a job" Well that was wrong because everyone studied it, and the bubble burst, and at the end of the day - why do something you hate and sit at a computer like a zombie? (even if you are getting paid ridiculously well).

The "worthless" humanities may not get you a job but they teach you how to think and conceptualize the world...

Do I still think Universities and 'higher education' are one big business to suck the money out of your pocket? Sure. (in north america at least).

Anastasia - at the end of the day, you will likely be unemployed or with low salary - so follow your heart ;) Study something that interests you, enjoy your student years, and...

Marry Rich ;)

Study / Where I should study journalism(in Poland ) [32]

So now I have to find out what subject interested me and then use it in my future career..

You can start right now ;) Tell us about the latest fashions in Ukraine... I hear the women there are very beautiful.... (photos would help tell your story)

Studying Journalism is kind of like studying Business. It is one thing to actually study it, it is another thing to actually do it.

The best business minds and journalists never studied those subjects, they learned at a school called "real life"

That said - coming from Ukraine ... Poland is full of opportunities and really high salaries ;) You will love living here!

Law / Selling a car without putting it in your name - Multiple Umowas - what's the deal? [25]

back on topic .. although I'm enjoying the Insurance info too :)

You can definitely Not register a car without penalty. I registered a vehicle today, which I bought from a guy who drove it for 2 years!!! without ever registering it. With the registration card for the car, his original Umowa for when he bought it, and our new one for our transaction - everything good to go. The lady at desk didn't think anybody (old owner) had done anything wrong - this is normal practice in Poland.

That said - would I want to get in a major car accident in an unregistered vehicle, or drive it in a different country? - No.

Now I just have to figure out where to pay the tax :P

Study / Where I should study journalism(in Poland ) [32]

I think journalism is one of those degrees for people who will mostly end up unemployed ;) people who don't have the brains or initiative to actually jump into the industry themselves.

You don't need a journalism degree to do journalism - your best bet would be to start working in the field now, educate yourself widely or specific to what interests you.

My friend is a top reuter's reporter, travelling the world and living it up, but he never did a journalism degree or had any such training.

Life / BEST CELLPHONE PLAN IN POLAND? UNLIMITED CALLING, SMS, INTERNET, GOOD EURO ROAMING RATES [5]

I will answer my own questions lol

I went with NJU mobile as there is no contract and I want to see what happens next year re: new roaming laws and cheaper rates.

great call quality as its Orange network but so far the internet is quite bad - a lot of sites won't even load (like facebook). May be my old phone but Plus worked fine before...

Law / Selling a car without putting it in your name - Multiple Umowas - what's the deal? [25]

Since 2013 RHD cars can be registered? However, I am sure someone here on PF said he went to his local car reg office and they laughed at that idea :)
Anyway, thank you for that link and blog info -- I shall print it out and take it to the office here if they refuse to register a RHD that I might transfer to PL.

I'm inclined to laugh too... although I don't know the law about RHD cars. I do know the prices are like half price of normal cars.

My understanding was that certain exceptions could be made for 'classics' but that RHD cars are not registrable here.
