News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

it is not worth while me visiting all of Poland all of the time to keep up with the latest trends

Err, the collapse of Communism and the ensuing socio-economic changes were more than just a trend.
Also you didnt need to visit Poland to see this as I believe it was mentioned on the news at the time.

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

The collapse of Communism as seen in Berlin with the collapse of the Berlin Wall was really the main feature of the last days of communism in Eastern Europe not so much Warsaw and the Poles.

You're right, the two are unrelated.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

- Contrary to the media announcements, 99% of Poles working in UK are not immigrants; they don't intend to stay here. They're just guest workers.

I doubt that 99% of any immigrant group anywhere in the world has ever returned to their country of origin. It never happens.
Britain is full of older immigrants with stories of how they miss 'home' and wish they were back there. People love a good moan.

UK, Ireland / Polish opinion of England as a country and the English nation [64]

It seems to have gone the other way now in the Polish media. Apparently any stories involving negative experiences of Poles in Britain are well publicised so as to discourage anymore of them from leaving. Some dont believe the hype, most do.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

but with everything, its a 2 headed coin, we can employ cheaper labour( that doesnt mean exploit) but the 16-21 year olds natives will find it alot more difficult for work.

Its surprising the sheer number of people on these boards who cant grasp this basic point. Its much easier to just to pick sides and resort to stereotypes.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

There are similarities between ET and immigrants:

ET only came for a short visit but due to circumstances had to stay longer.

Poor English language skills.

Constantly blathering on about wanting to go home but never doing anything about it.

Like most immigrants he was short and could mend things.

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

Polish as much as africans of whatever else are viewed as immigrants

However Africans are more likely to have it. This isnt intended as an insult its just a depressing statistical fact.

UK, Ireland / Polish opinion of England as a country and the English nation [64]

Such stories should be published however making them the centrepiece of the news is unbalanced and illustrates an intended bias. A murder of a Pole in England will make the front page in the Polish media.

A murder by a Pole will not.
The murder of a Pole in Poland will not.
Other murders of people in Britain will not.
There is a filter being utilised to make it appear as though Poles are continual victims of brutality by faceless 'others'.
Contrast this with the recent murder of an English girl in Italy or with the case of Maddie McCann in Portugal. The British meda, for all there faults, never tried claiming that the victim's nationality was a contributing or in anyway relevant factor in their deaths.

Is this the case with those Polish victims of violence in Britain?

Love / Why do Polish women prefer foreigners for boyfriends and husbands? [418]

Why do Polish women prefer foreigners for boyfriends and husbands?

I dont think its so much that Polish women prefer foreign men, more that foreign men like Polish women and so approach them more often then Polish men will approach foreign women. Hence the disparity.

I know a few Polish women who always thought they would end up with a Polish guy, as that was there preference. However if you go to to a foreign country, esp. Britain, and you are a good looking woman you will be approached pretty much everytime you go out for a drink. Chances are that one of these guys will make the grade and nature will take its course. I dont think this is the case in Poland where approaches are made more through mutual friends and acquaintences. There a lot less 'cold calling' and therevfore vfewer opportunities.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

Quoting: Grzegorz_
Henestly I wouldn't be happy If a million of foreigners came to Poland but UK had already millions of immigrants

I dont know If you noticed that there is 0,5 mln of Ukrainians (working mostly illegaly) in Poland and they havent been born here ... For me it isnt problem they are here to make money and some of them are looking for better place to live ... just like some of Poles in UK ...

The Polish immigration to Britain is unprecedented in these numbers in this space of time. One cannot say 'oh well, there were a few blacks there anyway, what are they complaining about?!'

Ukrainians share a border with Poland as well as a historic and cultural similarities greater than Poland shares with Britain. A million Irish arriving in Britain wouldnt be seen as as much of an issue for instance.

Work / Have been offered a job in Warsaw - should I move to Poland?? [48]

Personally...and everyone is different in their likes/dislikes so I am simply relaying my experience..

Fck 'em. Post it anyway as that is the whole purpose of these boards. You probably will have to qualify every negative statement you make with a positive or by saying 'of course it is also the same in other countries' etc

Its a shame we have to pre digest every opinion for the hyper-sensitive amongst us who wants these boards to be a love fest of all things Polish, but unfortunately some people are unable to deal with a concept as complicated as 'context'.

To me the most interesting posts are the ones from ex-pats living in Poland. These posts have validity and basis in fact and experience rather than guesswork so I'd love to know specific experiences you've had, positive or negative.

News / GDP of Poland.. 338 billion pop-38.5mil Cali GDP 1.7 Trillion pop-37.7mil [70]

Does poland lack wealth b/c its just fresh out of communism? Is it because of a lack of natural resources? OR is it because of the work ethic of polish workers? Is it because of the social low standing of poland vs other more well liked places? Its quite humorous how my state produces 4x more goods and services than ur country! Not to mention poland has been around for much longer than cali.

A British person could not get away with saying half of what you've said.

You're still talking bollox though.

Work / Why Poland employers are afraid of hiring any foreign nationals? [171]

I agree with everything you have written.

The same thing happens in that bastion of internationalism and European idealism, France. From what I've heard its easier to count the number of countries who have a genuine culture of liberalism in their employment policies (UK, Ireland, Spain etc) then those that dont.

In order for this policy to work the economy of the country involved needs to be as liberal and unrestricted as possible as the employer needs to have the right to hire and fire with a certain amount of ease. In Poland this isnt the case.

News / Polish Immigrants Leave America for Europe [210]

The same stupid bastards and clowns that invented the airplane, lightbulb, motion picture industry, insulin, the computer, THIS THING YOU'RE TYPING ON .. THE INTERNET???

I'd just like to say that the internet was invented by an Englishman and you cant invent insulin as it is produced naturally by the body.

Americans have invented lots of other stuff though.

News / Polish Immigrants Leave America for Europe [210]

the internet - started with the creation of ARPA where Lawrence Roberts started working on the implementation of the network. He based his work on publications by Paul Baran on packet switching. Paul Baran was born in Grodno, Poland.

It is difficult to narrow the inventor of the internet down to one person or invention but Tim Berners Lee is widely accepted as the inventor of the internet as he was the creator of embedded hyperlinking between web pages. Without this the internet is just a big network of unrelated data. This is what has made the internet possible more than any other single creation.

Work / Brazilian moving to Poland - job ideas, Polish language, other tips? [30]

We both like London, have quite "good" jobs, but when thinking about having a family London is just not the right place.

Maybe try what a lot of British people do who live in London- commute. Live outside London, somewhere nicer with a bit of greenery but close enough to London for you to work and go out.
