Travel / Białowieża National Park in Poland [461]

Google this. The scientists say bark beetle infestation occurs every ten years or so, and the forest can handle itself.

Work / PAT testing electrical equipment in Poland [51]

Our bathroom sockets are high on the wall and covered with a spring loaded mechanism. I feel safe enough, although I might feel differently if we had young kids.

Law / Which Poland's visa I can apply - national visa D or Schengen visa? [27]

Security services often use a broad brush when assessing risks. Given that many terrorists have slipped through the net and continue to do so, you must appreciate their caution. I sympathise with you, but I suggest you revise your plans. The only alternative I can see is that you engage a very competent human rights lawyer to put together an exhaustively detailed dossier putting your case. That, of course, would be expensive. Good luck.

Life / Polish Attitudes toward America [36]

Trump is not despised in Poland for the most part

No, probably not despised, but it depends on the demographic. The same kinds of people like his bombast and vulgarity in the US and Poland. More educated people usually just shake their heads when they read about his daily lies. There is some relief that there are some 'adults' in the administration now, even though they are military ones. The growing assertiveness of Congressional Reps is also an encouraging sign.

Study / Any (inexpensive) English Schools in Krakow? [60]

Presumably, if the child graduated from an exclusive hospital at birth, their chances of being accepted to a smart kindergarten would be enhanced.

Love / How do I get a shy Polish man to make a move? [9]

If you are both shy, this could turn into a long courtship. Take the bull by the horns and tell him you need help fixing the leg of your bed. Alternatively, ask him what he's doing at the weekend and suggest going somewhere together. He'll probably be as delighted as he is relieved.

Food / Papa John's Pizza coming to Poland [28]

The worst pizza I've ever had, and I suspect anyone has ever had, came from a place in Hajnowka in the early 2000s. They used pickled cabbage and tinned peas as toppings. And lots of ketchup, natch.

Makes a nice change to have some eye-candy serving the meals.

I agree. That's what I'm complaining about! A matter of taste, no doubt.

Not as good as it used to be

I used to use Sphinx a lot, but they suddenly decreased their portion size some years ago, at least in B.Stok.

the waiters are officially 'trainees' sent by the employment exchange.

And always guys. Clearly a company policy. Is that even legal?

Law / Regulations on Online Betting in Poland [4]

I used to be a frequent horse-player in the UK, but Polish bookies are very mean. The odds are truly lousy. Haven't placed a bet for years. Tried Paddy Power for some politics bets but they're blocked in PL. Just as well, really. Saved some money!

Food / Papa John's Pizza coming to Poland [28]

There's a Polish chain called Da Grasso which I've been to a couple of times and found to be horrible.

I use our local one occasionally, but not for the pizzas. The base is too doughy. They do good salads, and their wings and lasagne are ok, too.

Real Estate / Due Diligence - Land Buying in Poland [5]

The land registry is the place to go to find out who owns the land. You'll need to submit your plans to the relevant authority to get planning permission. Find out whether the owner has any claims against him/her at the tax office, ZUS and court. Engage a notary to do this if you don't want to traipse around town and wait for hours in offices. Apply for water asap. In our case it was easy and fast, but in cities it can take a year. We did all this about seven years ago. It was quite a bit of work, but we found the Polish authorities to be professional and helpful.

Work / Diary of a Teacher in Poland [181]

If anyone is thinking of watching the truly awful remake of the Wicker Man, starring Nick Cage, don't bother.
Ken Loach's 2004 Ae Fond Kiss has a look at modern Scottish reality in this romcom. Suitable for the age group. It's on YT.

Never seen pomjb? Shame on you. The book is great, too. "For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like."

Food / Do Polish people like frozen foods from China? [25]

I recently saw 'forbidden rice' (Chinese or Indian black rice) on an online San Francisco restaurant menu. I'm interested in trying it, and it's on sale on allegro. Anyone tried it? It's quite expensive, so I don't want to buy it if it's something you have to grow up with to like.

Life / Polish teen hotties, nastolatki article what they like [30]

This thread should be removed.

The fact that it hasn't says a lot about this forum. No doubt the sacred first amendment would be quoted in its defence. These days I feel like taking a shower after visiting this site.

Life / What do locals believe represents Poland and its future? [17]

In Poland it's the forests that are exceptional.

My wife just got back from a mushroom hunt. Loads of maszlaki, quite a few prawdziwek, and a few parasol mushroom (can't remember their Polish name). This summer we almost got sick of kurki.

Language / What are escorts called in Poland? [25]

Where I'm from...

That's as good a definition as anyone is likely to find. Unfortunately, sometime in the ?80s people started using slut to mean prostitute. Perhaps the word can be reclaimed. God know there's more need for it now than ever before.

UK, Ireland / 31 year old Polish man causes accident under influence of alcohol and kills 8 [198]

dripping it through bread

Getting way off topic here but that reminds me of a story my close relative told me. He was serving on a Royal Navy ship which had some helicopters on board (not an aircraft carrier). Due to an extended deployment the beer ran out. Two guys whose job it was to secure the helicopters filtered warmed boot polish through toast and drank it. They lost a helicopter overboard and, apart from being canned for a while, were fined a token amount to be taken from their pay basically forever.

The good stuff was always a tiny fraction of it, most of it toxically strong and contaminated with traces of methanol.

In my bachelor days I got plastered on rubbish bimber and had a scary three-day hangover.

There is still a meths drinking culture

It always makes me shake my head when I see meths sold from the same shelf as vodka, e.g. I've seen this in Spolem. Last winter I slowly drove past a guy who was collapsed on a grass verge (people were attending him). Although my windows were closed, I could smell meths. Why anyone would or could drink it is beyond my comprehension.
