Genealogy / Trying to locate my grandparents names, where to start the search? [19]

My grandfather would have the same last name; but I need my grandmother's maiden name and both of their first names.

your father's birth certificate should have: name of father and name of mother (and possibly her maiden name).

Love / ARE POLISH WOMEN CATTY...? [75]

Please consider that some members choose not to post very often. they may or may not be lurking. insulting a member whether he/she is online/posting or not is hardly right.

how would you like it if u left the forum for a period and came back to find a number of insults aimed at you.

News / Weekend of carnage as 41 people lose their lives on Poland's roads [44]

Are Poland's roads better or worse today compared to previous decades?

the roads are getting better, but very slowly. a better road does not make a better driver though. these days you have the same idiot in a faster car on what he thinks is a faster road. many of the new roads are within the city boundary here.

What are your experiences of Poland's roads?

put it this way. i know my around the Polish court system and i've never been the accused

the way drivers ignore pedestrian crossings, chance it at red lights, overtake, etc is beyond stupidity.

those who plan the roads appear clueless too.

Genealogy / I need help finding addresses in Warsaw. [11]

keep any letters short and to the point... include an e-mail address... maybe include a copy of a family photo, which includes someone they might recognize, so they know u are serious.

some folks might take a week or two before replying, some never do.

the problem with genealogy/family history is that u care, but perhaps the other party doesn't.

one of the posters on the forum might do a translation 4 u... just ask.

Genealogy / Trying to locate my grandparents names, where to start the search? [19]

I'm trying to locate the names of my paternal grandparents

we need more info.

what do you already know ? Where have you looked ?

if you offer nothing then i'm afraid we can't help.

i'm a little confused though. your paternal grandparents would have the same surname as u, yes/no.

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

This must explain why the second largest group of non-Germans in Berlin is Polish.

As was mentioned earlier no-one has to give anything back. Especially when people have freedom of movement.

I have noticed that German Language is almost as important/popular as English with regard to school pupils.

It is now an open Europe with a common people whose only border is language.

How much does it cost? Are there public hot spots?

make friends with the guy next door... make sure u are left alone for five minutes... copy the WEP key from his control box (there is usually a sticker with the number on it)... and bob's your uncle.

News / Poland's budget problems = Polish funerals [27]

No, there should be nothing for new born children. If you can't afford them, don't have them!

nothing wrong with a little help along the way. the uk has been paying for kids for 50 years or more.

News / Poland's budget problems = Polish funerals [27]

Instead of giving 6,487 zlotys to a dead guy maybe they should give this amount for every new born instead? This would for sure help the parents.

new born kiddies get about 1,000zl already.

it's seems one is worth more when dead.

USA, Canada / Feminine surname endings in America? [48]

is that merely by custom and personal preference or is there a US law mandating that -ska names msut be changed to -ski?

i would imagine that it was automatic to give one name to all family members... based on the husband, father, senior male.
if Americans don't or didn't use the Polish system then the compromise is as above.
however, the rule is probably written in law.

Real Estate / Noise levels from a building site in Poland [11]

Thanks. It is actually a big building site i.e. new apartments just on a site next to existing partments.

if u have after hours noise:

the building is behind schedule

it's workies making extra cash by working their second job of the day

it's people moving in and having the place fitted out.

either talk to the site manager or phone/write to the local authority

Life / Haircut for men in Wroclaw [11]

Hopefully not more than 50zl. I'm also in my late 20's.

there are loads of barbers. they are just not in the centre of town.

a regular haircut (non-salon) should cost 15 - 20 zl.

i've been going to the same place for twenty years and i still don't know which street it's on :)

Life / Polish people and Politeness [84]

What about the great British bane of queue jumping - is that usual in Poland?

it does happen

worse is when there is a stooge planted in the queue and then someone comes along with a full trolly and plants themselves in front of you.

when it comes to queues some are polite and some take the pi$$.

UK, Ireland / Ive been in the UK for 6 days to relocate and im going back to Poland. [281]

i spent a couple of weeks in Newcastle/Gateshead last year. in my younger days it was going through 1960's post-war regeneration, but with it's local industry at that time it was not an impressive place.

Now the old shipbuilding and coal mining have gone, a new regeneration has taken place and now it's a good place to be. but of course the locals still have things to complain about.

as a reflection of modern times the number of shops with shutters (and graffiti) seems to be growing. and yet the parks and gardens seem well kept. youth and their freedom to do as they please (in a negative way) seems to me to be the real problem.

i'm not planning on going back to the UK, but i can see that to start again over there one would need confidence and a healthy bank account.
