Study / Information Needed: Skarbek University, Warsaw. [57]

I found this

knol.google.com/k/wshifm-im-f-skarbka/skarbek-graduate-school-of-business/2b1esfapwj7ld/2#

I dunno but I am weary of a university that is set up in an office building. To me it looks like it targets foreigners- and quite possibly the degrees they offer may not be recognized.

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

The day that Poles stop immigrating to countries outside of Poland is the day that Poland should stop accepting foreigners. The double standard that exists is beyond disgusting.

5) is Polish language compulsory as i dont know a word of it ?
You don't need to speak Polish.

ok- so where do you live? why do you think the cost of living in Warsaw is so little? And the days where you don't need to speak Polish are long over.

Life / Favourite Polish movies? [107]

my ultimate favourite Polish film is Three colours: White from Krzysztof Kieslowski. It really is amazing work and I remember living in Poland when life was like this- not long after the wall fell.

Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

This is an interesting topic to come up now as I am opening a shop in Warsaw next month. I have met many rude people working the shops here and I have met many nice ones too.

I was trying to get era connect sorted and the woman behind the counter was literally screaming at me- the woman standing next to me had quite a sympathetic look towards me- I wanted to reach out and punch this "customer service" rep but she was pregnant.....so I just dreamt I did.

I loath shop girls that sit on their asses all day and do crosswords or sms their friends that have equally boring jobs. I believe it stems from communism and how customer service was not a priority. I also despise the people that work in Almi decor who think they are above everybody else because they work there. they work in a shop for crying out loud- not brain surgeons.

I think most foreign stores, with the exception of all the supermarkets, place priority on customer service. There are shops you can walk into and immediately be welcomed and they will do their best to help you. Then there is the throw back from communism where the woman sits behind the desk, reading a book, on the internet or something equally boring and clients are grunted at.

It boils down to taking pride in your work. When my store opens I plan to kill it in customer service -the locals won't know what hit them and the store will be remembered- which hopefully will make my business successful.

News / HIV infected Nigerian has bitten bus ticket's controler in Cracow! [56]

I think that there is probably a lot more to the story than we know. The guy has a different skin colour- he is already a target. In my experience- ticket controllers are a-holes. I already posted how one took money from me- funny that, maybe he should have given me a ticket or at least a receipt- no, just the cash. The fact is there are many people in Poland that don't appreciate people with an obvious different ethnicity. I do ok because I am a pastey faced white girl and I speak Polish.

The Nigerian probably doesn't speak Polish and felt threatened by "Jan Nowak" with a huge attitude. I am not saying it is acceptable but I am willing to bet that the ticket controller was quite aggressive and probably threatened him.

Polish people have the right to know how immigrants behave, especially immigrants from 3rd world countries.

and people have the right to know how Polish immigrants behave in other countries- or it doesn't count because they are white?
typical Polish double standard.

And I have met many unfriendly ticket controllers in Warsaw.

Love / Expecting a baby with Polish partner - "multi-cultural pregnancy/parenting"? [45]

In your expert opinion at what age do you think you should start introducing the second language?

from the beginning.
I am not going to get technical with words- you can google that yourself, however- the part of the brain that assimilates language and speech etc (neocortex) from birth if a child is immersed in two languages this part will allow the languages to grow in the brain together. (I hope this makes sense) I guess you could say the brain files them together.

If a child learns only one language and later on in life learns another (I believe it is after age 13- but I could be wrong about that) the neocortex will categorize the first language and the second language separately. They may know two languages but how the brain categorizes them is different.

It is totally possible to be bilingual at a later age- however, it is easier for the brain to do this from the very beginning when it is still developing.

I am not sure what you mean by "the baby will become confused" All languages are confusing for children as they learn and grow.

My immediate experience is my family.
I have two girls- girls typically learn languages faster than boys- this is not a hard and fast rule but statistically it is the case.

My eldest was born in Canada. From the beginning my husband and in laws only spoke Polish to her. English, however, was the dominant language. When she was 3 we moved to Warsaw and she went to an international school where her teacher was Polish but spoke English. My daughter was picking up these crazy pronunciations and one day we were driving and she asked me what that bright yellow thing in the sky was called- that summer we spent in Canada. She now goes to a different international school where the teachers come from all parts of the world- as do the student.

my youngest was born in Warsaw. Polish was her dominant language until she started international school and spoke English with her classmates.
My eldest always new who to speak Polish to and who to speak English to.
My youngest often mixed up the languages but now she doesn't.

It is much like learning to talk, read or write. Initially there is confusion (not major confusion) but as the brain grows the languages grow and develop too. Ultimately what is the big deal if children make grammatical or language errors when they are young. It is part of the learning process.

How can children differentiate between the two? I have been told that if you introduce the second language to early the baby will become confused.

The children differentiate if each parent exclusively uses their mother tongue while addressing the child. Children can strongly identify their parents voices and when they are being talked to much before they can speak themselves (assymetric language acquisition). Haven't had the opportunity to put it into practice yet... :)

I have put this into practice two times with no problems. Their brains are sponges- they can accommodate a second language with no problems.

Love / Expecting a baby with Polish partner - "multi-cultural pregnancy/parenting"? [45]

Ohh for fcuk sake if youre not talking about your economic husband then its all about yourself and your education

you really are a major arsehole. Why would I comment on something if I haven't studied it? I went to school in Canada to be a preschool/nursery school teacher- I studied language. This has nothing to do with my husband or the fact that he studied economics. This is what I know from my school and from work experiences. I have worked with loads of children that have no problems assimilating two or more languages as well as my own children who are completely bilingual. Not to mention teaching English to Polish children and adults and noticing that the children learned so much easier and quicker than the adults.

I disagree with your opinion that children will mix up two languages. So what. I disagree because it is a fact. Perhaps you should actually learn something so that your opinions are not wrong and stop insulting people when they disagree with you.

As for my husband being an economics major- the only one who brings this up is you. Time and time again. I have maybe said it once. He is actually in real estate- which I have also only said once, now twice.

Clearly you have a problem with me, that is fine, because it would appear as though you have a problem with a lot of people. What I don't understand is why you think you are so much better than anyone else. This is a personality issue that you have and not a nationality issue. My grandparents immigrated to Canada from a town just outside of Liverpool as did the majority of relatives on my mothers side. They were the nicest and funnest people I have ever known.

You are just a typical obnoxious as$hole who hides behind a nationality.

Will bear this in mind pip -- like your kids,we were brought up from a young age completely bilingual, after mum moved to Spain. Youngest bro was brought up with both languages from birth and he hasnt had any problems. We spend a lot of time in Spain and Poland so its inevitable that kid will learn all 3 -- not a bad thing! Will hopefully bring good job prospects! lol :)

Natalka, once of the best gifts you can give your child- and the cheapest is the gift of language. Honestly, your children will have no problems learning more than one language. There is a little girl next door to us who speaks Polish, Italian and English.

My husbands good friend speaks Polish, French, Italian and English.
I speak English and Polish -I used to speak French.
My husband speaks Polish, German and English (he won't admit to Russian but he speaks that too)
I could give you the technical reasons of why it is better to learn when they are younger- but it is probably too boring but just know it is a good thing.

Genealogy / Is Aleska a Polish baby name ? [42]

I have never heard it here before- but that doesn't mean that it isn't. Polish names seem to come in waves- what is popular for girls is Maja, Aleksandra, Asia, Magda, Julia.

There is a hungarian prn star called Aleska Diamond.
I also found that it comes from Alexia- which is also not common here.

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

And do you think Americans and British assimilate when they move to Poland? Right- there is a British school and American school here. Not to mention all the clubs and groups for expats. And do they learn the language? I think not.

Only those who live here for long periods of time.
If she is just doing a term job then she doesn't need to assimilate, she just needs to fit in for the duration.
There is no need to worry about being attacked because she is Polish.

did you mix up the letters? Aleska or Aleksa?? It, of course, is from Aleksandra- which of course is Polish.

Love / Expecting a baby with Polish partner - "multi-cultural pregnancy/parenting"? [45]

You cant bombard a baby early on with two different languages IMO, they'll just become confused.

actually you are grossly off on this. Children can learn up to six languages by the time they are six. Teaching a child from the beginning is the best thing a parent can do. Their brains are sponges and the part of the brain that assimilates languages is ready for languages.

I know this because I studied it in school in Canada.
I also know this because I have two completely bilingual daughters. We speak two languages at home. My husband speaks only Polish to the girls and I speak only English. We have no problems at all.

It is later in life that language becomes more difficult to learn.
The best thing you can do for your child, and cheapest and easiest is to speak your mother tongue and your partner speak his. The baby will be able to handle it.

Law / Permanent Residence in Polska: procedures, list of documents, etc. [59]

Polish health care is fine. the hospitals are old but they are ok. we "pay as we go" meaning we typically use private and just pay when we need it...except for the time when my youngest stuck a bead up her nose- they told us to go to the childrens hospital right away.

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

The tricity area by far. Gdansk is gorgeous and you can really see the Dutch influence in the old town. My husband is from Sopot, so we usually spend the week ends in the summer up there.

However, I have never been to Wroclaw- and I have been to most of the larger cities in Poland. Perhaps it is time for a road trip.....

News / HIV infected Nigerian has bitten bus ticket's controler in Cracow! [56]

oh, and this guy didn't have a target because of the colour of his skin? sorry- he probably felt threatened by some sandle and sock wearing lech walesa look alike who was decidedly agressive.

I have been stopped by these idiots- and they took about 100 pln from me instead of giving me a ticket. The bus I was on was jam packed and I couldn't reach the stamper which incidently wasn't working in the first place.

hiv is not spread through the saliva. the inspector will not get hiv. but he will get a lot of attention and media coverage- which is probably what he wants anyway.

News / Andrzej Lepper committed suicide [98]

I for one am betting on somebody else killing him. There are too many questions.
If you think about this guy- he was an arrogant ass that thought he was above those of whom he represented. He thought he was above the law. He lived his life showing people how much money he made from them and he was nothing more than a thug.

I don't see this type of personality somebody who kills themselves. He never thought he would get in trouble- but he was afraid for his life.

I think that if Polish authorities take the time- they will uncover something that will alter the country.

USA, Canada / My story. Born In the USA - do I have a chance in Poland, my Mother Country? [69]

so he wants to come based on his experiences, however, I think he should try contacting people from the states first. I think it is possible for him to set up and be quite successful. Look at john porter. he is a skeleton of a man who is married to a beautiful Polish woman. He has a very successful career here.

There are loads of places in Warsaw that play small venues with foreigners. About 6 years ago I saw this band at a hotel- they were from Canada. The primarily did cover tunes- but the place was rocking and everybody was having a great time.

I spoke to a few of the band members and they told me they do a regular tour of Poland and every time they are successful and their shows are packed.

I think it is possible for him to do well- it is just taking the first leap into it.

Law / Why are the Poles following the Swiss Franc? [17]

actually it is looking more and more like Lepper was actually murdered. If you think about it- he was too arrogant to kill himself, he thought he was a super star.
