This is of course the Polish Forum, not the Byelorussian Forum. Or the Lithuanian forum for that matter.

Long live Wilno!!! :):):):)

Litwo! Ojczyzno moja!

Definition of 'Flat Tax'
A system that applies the same tax rate to every taxpayer regardless of income bracket. A flat tax applies the same tax rate to all taxpayers, with no deductions or exemptions allowed.

imf.org/external/pubs/ft/wp/2006/wp06218.pdf

Particularly in the United States, the term "flat tax" is associated with Hall and Rabushka (1983 and 1985; HR). Their proposal is for a very precisely defined and coherent tax structure: a combination of a cash-flow tax on business income and a tax on workers' income, both levied at the same, single rate (with a personal allowance available against the wage tax).

cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/serials/files/cato-journal/1985/11/cj5n2-14.pdf

A true fiat rate tax on income has two characteristics: first, the tax base is a comprehensive measure of income with no preferential
treatment given to specific sources or uses of income, and second, a single tax rate is applied to that base. In short, a flat rate tax is a proportional tax on total income.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_tax

A flat tax (short for flat tax rate) is a tax system with a constant marginal rate, usually applied to individual or corporate income. A flat tax falls under proportional tax as they allow certain deductions. There are various tax systems that are labeled "flat tax" even though they are significantly different.

Barney, unless you are talking about something biblical, every credible source I came across refers to Flat Tax as a rate to be levied, not a set amount per person regardless of income / sources of income.

Exodus 30:11-16:
11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

12 When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.

13 This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs:) an half shekel shall be the offering of the LORD.

14 Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the LORD.

15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

16 And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

Poll Tax: Everybody pays 1000 zloty. Doesn't matter if you are the babci in the toilet stall or the CEO who owns the firm.

So for the poor babcia who makes 20,000 zloty a year is paying a 5% tax. The CEO who makes 200,000 ends up with a 0.5% tax rate. Not so flat.

Flat is where everybody pays 1% whether they make 20,000 or 2,000,000 a year.

I highly doubt that, he def only makes $50,000 a year

Do they teach personal finance in your institute of higher education? It is a good book, and life is about choices. Not everybody buys into the hype that more is better.

If you like forums, check out this one.... mrmoneymustache.com/forum/

And yes, it is a good book :-)

lol, golddiggers. With 50 000 a year? That's hardly enough for 2 people to get by.

It's not what you make, it's what you keep. The guy could be a millionaire, just spending enough to get by and wisely investing the rest. The guy with the flashy car and McMansion is probably up to his eyes in debt. You should read The Millionaire Next Door.

Life / Is multi-culti in Poland bankrupt? [73]

So they can legitimately say: You brought us here so now you can feed, clothe and take care of us.

They could, but their descendants hard won freedom has also won them the right to live within their new society, rights to an equal education, equlity in access to jobs, political participation, the privelege of paying taxes, etc..... Are you in favour of mandated, ceaseless welfare payments to those descendants whose ancestors were dragged here from Africa?

UK, Ireland / Best Airport to Land In the UK for a trip to Hull [23]

First of all, thanks to all (Roz, Vincent, Warszawski and Delph) for your input. Very much appreciated!

I think these two old gals would prefer one direct flight to the UK and as strait a shot as possible (no train changes??) to Hull.

I had a look at Birmingham and Manchester, both take direct flights from Canada.

I have heard that Heathrow is quite a confuzzling kind of airport, and am a pretty sure they wouldn't make it out of there with their sanity (based on what I've heard.....)

So based on that I think they might be good options.

I am a little nervous about them making a connection from Schipol back to the UK, although it would be much closer to their ultimate destination. If it were me, yeah, but not this pair. They'd be prone to get lost in the shuffle :-)

So, comparing connections from either Birmingham or Manchester, which has the most straight forward rail connection to Hull? Does either one have a direct (not transferring from one train to another) connection?

Once again, thanks to all, especially the mod who removed Mark081's offer.

UK, Ireland / Best Airport to Land In the UK for a trip to Hull [23]

So me dear ole mum and her sis are planning a trip to the UK for some ancestry research. Ultimate destination is the area surrounding Hull.

What's the best international airport to land in (direct flight from Canada) with decent rail connections to Hull? Keep in mind they are not very savvy world travellers, so the more straight forward the connection from the Airport Gate to a little B&B in Hull is key.

They don't drive so will be reliant on public transit the entire way. They will also be taking side trips to Bridlington and potentially the Peaks District.

Any advice?

Life / Hey, Nice Airport Wrocław! Or! Day #1 for an American Ex-Pat in Poland. [128]

I'm not a huge fan of these. Air-dried clothes are stiff, this one takes some getting used to. As does the last on my list:

I wasn't either.... But:

Saves on space - rack folds away nicely when not in use.
Saves on energy - no heating up a large chamber, running a large rotating drum
Saves on clothing bills. They tend to wear out tumbling around the drier, and lose their colour as well!
Also, if you have hardwood, it keeps the humidity level up, preventing drying out the wood.

OK the last one was a stretch, but....
