News / Father Popiełuszko beatified in Warsaw [28]

The Chechens are no allies of the West - after all, their use of suicide bombs is hardly compatible with the Western idea of civilisation.

Is Russia's government planting bombs in Moscow's tenement buildings and trying to blame on the Chechens compatible with Western idea if civilization?

But I'm sick to death of all this IT WAS RUSSIA, even when it clearly wasn't.

Then you must know who gave the order. We are listening.

No more story on that.

A friend of mine made a documentary with Piotrowski, who was the fall guy in this crime. When asked if he will tell the whole story, Piotrowski answered: Only if you guarantee the safety of my children.

The real murderers are still free, but you can be sure the orders came from Moscow. Of course, you would have to know something about the SB and how it functioned, which clearly you don't.

Travel / Pawiak Museum in Warsaw [14]

(even if it does have the usual Polish problems with history).

What is that about, Harry?

..................

If you visit Pawiak, which got its name after Pawia street, you might want to read up on the Gęsiówka, which is the street parellal to Pawia.

Travel / Pawiak Museum in Warsaw [14]

Pawiak Prison is not a very large museum, but a must to visit, so you also should visit the Warsaw Uprising Museum. It is nearby.

When you go to Aleja Szucha, the Gestapo prison holding cells, you might want to read up on Franz Kutschera. AK popped him on the corner of that street.

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

Muffin, Take a taxi. As you come out into the airport ignore men asking you if you need a taxi, because they will take you downtown via Belgium. Walk outside and take the taxi that lines up outside. Your fare will be about 30 zl.

In your case, the best bet is a daily ticket which works for metro, tram, and bus (about 10 zl). Write this down and show the nice lady at any news stand (Bilet dzienny).

PM me and I'll give a little tour around the city or even pick you up at the airport, you being my favorite poster and all. The offer is genuine.

Genealogy / Chelmno Area Families [3]

Am I right in thinking that Kulm is the German spelling for Chelmno? and that most of these other villages are located in the immediate vicinity?

You are right and in the right area.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che%C5%82mno

Swiecie

It's a gmina-county in which there is a village Święte: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmina_%C5%9Awiecie

I saw a village near Chełmno called Grubno, which is probable your Gruelno.

At the bottom of the above links you have the surounding counties and villages. Work around these to locate your villages.

History / Poles and Russians -- love-hate relationship? [209]

Is there some kind of new-wave anti-Russian nationalists?

It is not new. We had a very, very bad experience with Russia in our history. This should not be personal though and calling someone a kacap should be reserved for people who actually deserve it like our friend ContantineK here on PF.

So tell me Poles, why shall I carry a shame any government on this territory deserved in the past three centuries???

You shouldn't. You know it doesn't make sense.

Work / Opus Dei opens school in Warsaw [21]

It isn't. This the place to crap on things Polish mainly. There are a few expats here and a few Poles who would have more to say but the level of discussion is constantly brought down by various foreign yahoos having no interest in anything Polish. Good posters, after a while, just log off.

BTW, the school is in Falenica and the kindergarden in Józefów.

News / Potheads attack police in Warsaw [40]

You can get 2 years for one joint in Poland, about the same as for rape. This needs to change and there is legislation coming to change that nonsense.

History / DID THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT OF POLAND CENSOR MAIL IN AND OUT OF POLAND [29]

There was a degree of sympathy towards the West during communist times so there would be likely defections but that would depend on the circumstances.

Defections would have been massive, or rather desertions. That is what was expected in the 80s, but for US Europe was just a buffer zone anyway. The Soviets would have reached England within a week to find blown up bases since all able aircraft would have been launched for a one way trip.

As to the mail, the biggest concern SB had was to steal dollars, marks, and pounds sent to families from the West. They censored that mail well.

Telephone calls were listened in on just like they are in prisons now. The censor could cut the call.

News / Polish Policeman shoots down a foreigner in Warsaw [300]

I looked into it and the Polish police do NOT have a policy to shoot to wound first. There was such a thing decades ago but hasn't been in effect for a very long time.

What policy do they have, since you looked into it.? How did you look into it?

News / Polish Policeman shoots down a foreigner in Warsaw [300]

I've read in today's paper that the man would have lived had the cops not been pelted by stones while trying to help the then injured guy. They we driven away.

He was shot in the thigh, but the femoral artery was cut.

I go to this market and it is normally very calm. I buy bok choi and shrimp from the Vietnamese and police controls are normal and accepted. No one panics. This market is long gone from when you could buy AKs. The guy who was shot had three kids and had been in Poland for five years; he had a criminal record also. Hard to tell what happened.

Some Nigerians do well in Poland:

From Nigeria to Lodz city council thenews.pl/news/artykul74196.html

After 15 years John Godson feels very much at home in Poland.

'I travel a lot. Each year I get to travel outside maybe four to six times. And I alwyas feel at home when I come back to Poland. Last December I was in Nigeria for one month. After two weeks I just felt I wasn't in the right place. I always feel at home when I'm in Poland. I don't know how to explain it.'

History / How Polish history is viewed by other countries textbooks [124]

It is definitely in many US history books...

I don't believe that.

some modern historians say that this is not true (sure there were cavalry division here & there),

Kid, only because you are too lazy to look up basic information, you can say something stupid like that.
