Food / Lentil pierogi & mushroom gołąbki [23]

meatless gołąbki made with rice, barley or buckhwheat and mushrooms and drenched with creamy mushroom gravy

That sounds delicious. I think I would much prefer the traditional tomato sauce though.

Here in California the Vietnamese soup called pho is now all the rage

You can find pho practically on every street in Little Saigon.

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

You are Polish if...

When you little, your parents called you a buttinsky, when you'd speak out of turn. (Maybe it's just a Polish-American slang term.)

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

The topic seems to have wandered.

I promise to be good & stay on topic :)

Des lives in Cali

As a matter of fact, there used to be an excellent Polish restaurant in Anaheim, California. It was a very friendly family owned-business. The owner kind of reminded me of Deborah Harry from Blondie. Their Polish food was wonderful and very authentic in taste. Great prices, with good size servings. They gave you enough food, to be able to take leftovers home. You really got your money's worth. On various weekends, they had live Polish entertainment. One problem... the restaurant's name was not catchy, in terms of promoting a Polish restaurant. The name was Mr. Smoke BBQ. Not a very Polish name at all. The only way I had discovered the place's existence, was from a flyer I had received at Pope John Paul ll Polish Church. The church is located nearby, in Yorba Linda, California.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

I think it's because Polish food stayed like it was in Poland and hasn't adapted to the American tastes

Ever watch Tool Time? There's an episode where Tim Allen gets a stomach ache, after eating Polish food. Perhaps the idea of staying away from Polish food hit some of the television audience?

Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA?

Location location location really matters. I don't want to have to drive 65 miles to the Los Angeles area, when I feel like dining in a Polish restaurant.

Food / Pancakes with cottage cheese? [40]

crepes may be cooked on a hot plate

In the United States crepes are usually thinner and filled with fresh fruit or compote.

american pancakes are different

Southern-style flap jacks are thicker than pancakes or hotcakes.

Love / How to survive a relationship in Poland? [42]

If some men had vaginas and could bear a kid, I wouldn't even think twice

If men could have babies, there would be zero percent population growth. Just ask Zimmy...

USA, Canada / Polish-American groups in Southern California [26]

any of you guys live in LA/San Diego, CA?

I'm merely 60 miles from LA and 100 miles from San Diego. Both a hop, skip and a jump away :)

how about South CA people? how are they like?

We're all very bad. When you see us, be sure to run in the opposite direction, lol!

Love San Diego, enjoy the gas-lamp district

The antique shops make it the coolest.

The freeway system here can be intimidating

Oh hell yeah. The 91 freeway tends to be a continuous sigalert 24-7.

Life / Drinking before clubbing in Poland? [25]

Drinking before clubbing?

It's probably a better idea to arrive to the club sober. If you end up plastered at the club, take a taxi cab back to your place.

USA, Canada / Pol-AM eateries/delis in California [17]

During the past weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting a Polish owned restaurant. It is the Best of Europe Deli. They're located in Lancaster, California. The owner is from a Polish town near Krakow.

Take a look at the fantastic homemade kapusta. It was filled with yummy slices of sausage. I can hardly wait to go back for more:)

Fyi, for kapusta lovers. Wienerschnitzel restaurants are having a 50th anniversary special, on July 17th. Sauerkraut hotdogs are only 61 cents all day long :)

POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY

Practically all your posts on PF are to complain about your Polish gf. Don't you ever have anything positive to say about her? After 4 yrs together, you'd pretty much know how things are between the two of you. Stop whining or just move on!

Love / Hopeful to date Polish woman [39]

there are cultural differences but I don't think that these cultural differences are key to happiness.

Yup, Artur has been known to give good advice on PF.

That's true just like the men wouldn't touch their ugly women

I think I'd possibly make an exception for the following average-looking Native American guy...

(Omg, is this the catsoldier who think it is?)
Indeed, a definition of Polish would be helpful... Do Polish-American women count?

News / Wal-Mart coming to Poland? [146]

do you know if they have the insane Trenta size, too? do people go there like an everyday thing?

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks. I just took a quick look inside. I wanted to compare the Warsaw location, to the ones in the United States. My sis wanted to go there. She had purchased a Starbucks coffee mug, written with Polish words. It as a gift for her husband.

To my surprise, Starbucks was pretty dead for a Saturday evening. While we were there, I only noticed one other customer present.

Life / Famous Polish music and musicians [48]

Just watched a television interview with singer Peter Cetera, from the legendary group Chicago. He mentioned he's half Polish. His musical career was greatly influenced, by his fond appreciation of Polka songs and melodies.

Food / Pancakes with cottage cheese? [40]

I like pancakes with cottage cheese but I don't think too many other Americans would man up and try them

International House of Pancakes (IHOP) makes some with a blend of cottage cheese. They're more like a blintz :)

News / Poles in work-life balance crisis [22]

As many as 42 percent of Poles sacrifice their private life by working extra hours

The article isn't very explicit. It states Poles are working overtime. It doesn't indicate if they are being compensated financially, in return for the extra work hours they've contributed.
