Genealogy / My dad's last name was Polak - Do I look in any way Polish? [57]

Already a cat fight over one silly photo. Women do tend to capture themselves in funny poses on Facebook though. Why do they always look off to the side? Is that supposed to be glamorous.

I couldn't click on that link with my android phone so dunno if you look Polish.

News / Becoming non-EUnuch -> giving up your share of handouts. [36]

Countries like Greece and Spain are, geographically, in a better position to export than countries like Germany. They should actually be ahead of the Germans and charging Germany to use their ports. Don't they realize this?

Pfft. Iceland was in that situation ONLY because it deregulated its financial institutions. One man made a lot of money off bad investments while the rest of Iceland suffered. Let's not confuse things.

News / Icy blast cleans the streets of the homeless in Poland.. [63]

So people who are pyschotic and out of touch with reality should be allowed to stay out in the cold just because they are ill? If they were well, they would not choose to be out. Same goes for alcoholics. They have no free will. Their illness makes choices for them.

I wouldn't buy them food because that is what shelters and charities are supposed to provide. As for them being violent, they could become that way if desperate enough for a drug or drink. People are nervous about ATMs anyway. This is why. You know how easy it would be for some bum to bump the money out of someone's hand then amscray? Police wouldn't do much about it, either, after the fact.

Why you being sarcastic, mate. Pull these people off the streets and into a public shelter of some kind, that way they won't be hanging around harrassing people at AtMs. Give them some menial labor. If the govs do that for prisoners, it's the least they can do for homeless. People with nothing to do trouble finds.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Poles just like to use English words now and then. It's not understandable why that is, or why people fancy words from a certain language other than their own. It becomes a trend and when that happens, lots of people say them, especially if they hear it on television or see it in print. That just encourages them. Might have something to do with it sounding exotic or there not being a word for it in Polish.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

People just love to insert English words into their language. Polish isn't the only example. English borrows plenty from other languages as well. This exchange is a rule of language so why get all anal about it?

Travel / Big Feet in Poland? [11]

How come there isn't any footage of them travelling in pairs? I dare one of those film makers to run up and get in Big Feet's face with a camera.

Study / Shocking! Test standards in Polish schools. [165]

"Hi. In Saturday I was in new cinema! This cinema is great because it is near the aqua park. I was on movie - "The Pirates of Caraibes", you must go at this movie, because it has interesting music and costiums. When I came at home the car was crash the black cat. I'm not surtitious, but this was very odd history".

This student needs to study English Prepositions. It's not perfect, but it has potential. Verb tense and placement needs work, too. With work, this student could be proficient in English.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

France is archaic in some ways. It's surprising it's a country in Western Europe. In some ways it is stuck in outmoded ways of thinking. Let's hope it gets with the times. This is really why a country should be glad it is not like France.

USA, Canada / Can you BE Polish without SPEAKING Polish in the US? [256]

That is why a Polish surname is so important when determining if someone is Polish or not. Maiden names work just as well btw. Polish last name = Polish Ancestors.

USA, Canada / Can you BE Polish without SPEAKING Polish in the US? [256]

Being Irish is perfect example. Irish generally speak English while their native tongue is gaelic yet you would insult them if you called them English based on their language. Language is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Its use is communicative only. It has nothing to do with anything else or you might as well call Americans, Canadians and Australians English since that's the language many of theem speak or all of Latin America Spanish since that's what they speak. Oh, if only life were that simple simon!

They are no more compromised than the Vietnamese waitress down the street who cannot speak Vietnamese. Why is this so hard for people posting here to understand? I went to college with a girl from Russia who had Polish ancestry. She told me she had Polish grandparents but she was born and raised in Russia. She also spoke fluent German. Does that make her German? No, just a girl born in Russia with Polish ancestors who learned to speak German at some point. Case closed.

The answer is YES you can be Polish without speaking Polish just like someone can be Innuit without speaking Eskimo or Comanche without speaking Comanche or Chinese without speaking Chinese. Europe is the only place that gets confused about such matters.
