Life / Inappropriately Touching a Baby - What are the cultural Norms in Poland? [12]

Oh, come on jon. There might not be HD video recordings of Savile abusing vulnerable people over forty years, but the sheer volume and weight of witness and (ok, alleged) victim evidence is staggering. Greville Janner, Stuart Hall and one or two others I'd be prepared to give the benefit of the doubt, but JS was all wrong.

The OP's gramps sounds a bit nutty. Is he strange generally? I've heard of women in a certain culture doing something similar, but not men.

Life / Snow in Poland, where is it? [22]

As far as I'm concerned the snow can stay away. Who needs it? There's nothing worse in winter than to spend hours shovelling the stuff and then to see it replaced with the same amount or more next day. Last year I hit a branch brought down by a heavy snowfall. Cost money for a smashed light and two panels. Snow? Keep it.

Language / Polish minority languages [13]

Yes, the parents spoke it at home and around town. The kids of course spoke standard Polish from their earliest days, but still use dialect when talking to old timers in the village. When I came on the scene the parents started speaking standard Polish exclusively when I was around, even though my Polish was even worse than it is now. Make of that what you will.

Work / Some questions about average wages and hiring a cleaning woman/maid in Poland [23]

So if someone could be hired for 10zl and I could afford 15zl, I'd probably pay 12.50, for example.

You'd be happy to pay two quid an hour, then. Do you know what that buys in Poland? A bus ticket for 50 km/a sandwich/under 3l of petrol. Just because people are low paid it doesn't mean it's right to pay low. People on 10 or 15 PLN/hour hate their boss's guts.

Language / Polish minority languages [13]

My in-laws are equally comfortable speaking standard Polish or the local dialectal form of Belarusian, which sounds like something in between the two to my inexpert ears. My wife speaks Belarusian when she talks to her friend who's a journalist on Radio Racja.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

Doesn't everyone like the French??!?

I like the French more and more after this vote. Now all they've got to do is significantly lower the price of Champagne and it'll be true love. At the moment I can only afford to be a Champagne socialist a couple of times a year. The French Left voting to keep the fascists out showed real intelligence and real maturity.

News / "We will not hesitate to shoot Kaczyński dead" - KOD Facebook page [164]

The thread should be left so that those responsible for the inflammatory, not to say libellous, remarks can have their noses rubbed in it when the truth comes out. Did anyone seriously believe it was anything other than a hack? Must be dim.

News / Monthly Smolensk Commemorations in Poland! [34]

A monument to those who died I can understand, but a monument to that embarrassing lousy president? The will of the president is right, but who is the president?

News / Poland to end state funding for IVF treatment [102]

just get a bank load or pay out of your own pocket

A friend of mine paid the basic 20,000 PLN per treatment (plus drugs, accommodation, etc.) before a successful pregnancy after four attempts. She knows a couple who tried eleven times. That adds up to serious money.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

G, most trannies are heterosexuals. Ironside, your conspiracy between the left and right sounds familiar. Aren't Jews supposed to be capitalists and communists at the same time? Perhaps PF's humble Catholic expert can enlighten me.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

In Poland there is a right to protest. Americans who propose McCarthyite surveilance show their true undemocratic colours. Most protesters will be Poles exercising their right to protest. Nocy, should Poles living in the UK leave if they do not like the government?

Life / Is it common for Polish people to speak English in Poland? [122]

It's possible that I might do myself an injury, bombarded as I am by terrible, sloppy language. Some experts might regard me as a pedantic twit (I won't trade insults) but I see it as my job, literally, to offer a model of standard, educated English. Yes, if enough people use 'wrong' language for long enough, it becomes 'right', but as far as I am aware the illiterates who use 'should of' are still in the minority.

Life / Is it common for Polish people to speak English in Poland? [122]

People who write 'should of' need compulsory reeducation, along with those who use question marks at the end of affirmative sentences, and those who don't know how to use 'however' (i.e. just about everyone nowadays).

Law / Drinking in a parked car. What the Poland's law says? [24]

There is no way I'd take the chance of drinking anywhere in a car, in any country on Earth. The cop brain is hard wired to arrest anyone in charge of a vehicle when over the limit. If Doug really needs to listen to Little Wing at seriously high volume (and I can dig that, man), he could always pull his daughter out of uni, send her out to work, and get those 1000PLN headphones.
