Snow in Poland, where is it?

I lived in Poland from late 2005 till early 2011. I remember the first winter temperatures of when i lived there reaching as low as -36, it was Jan18th & 19th 2006. That first year the snow didn't thaw till late March. Every year i lived there it was cold in the winter with consistent temps of below freezing, I remember two winters of temperatures being no warmer than -5 for three weeks consecutively. From what i can gather there hasn't been snow on the ground for longer than about 5 days in Dolnoslaskie since i left in 2011. People I speak to who still live in Poland keep saying "ohh we've been fortunate this winter".

I look at weather a lot and i haven't seen colder than -8 for 5 years in Wroclaw. We had - 12 / - 16 almost every year when i lived there. Am i fcuking nuts or is the weather in Poland much warmer? Wheres the snow?

God knows where the snow is it's 27c in the house now and we are thinking about opening the windows, my max temperature in the shade this year was 39.5 (Not official under the wood shed) the lowest night this year has been 4.5c.

This winter is freaking hot in poland. Sad times for the winter resorts at Zakopanie, Wisla, etc....

Yep Its hurting the resorts near me , I was talking to my brother in the UK earlier, I seem like we are getting the brit weather from the Atlantic, rain and wind

I used to use the ski resorts of Zieleniec and Czarna Gora a bit as they were quite near me, they're both only about 600 meters up to just over a 1000, so they cant have any snow at all. My old house was 165 meters above sea level and that hasn't seen hardly any snow for years. When we lived there i had to dig a trench to get the the firewood outside.

Last 2 winters were warm, this one is going to be warm too but unless I got something wrong the one 3 or 4 years ago was very cold. Poland being in the middle of the whole thing can be seriously affected by relatively small developments... this one is related to some blows from the Atlantic... or something.

Strange this should be the dries time of the year but it has been raining loads, not complaining many peoples wells had run dry because of the drought we had, looking at the forecast over the next two weeks it is going to be warm weird for Poland.

It's normal in Poland that some winters are cold and have a lot of snow, some are warm and have almost no snow. It can be also so that there is very cold and no snow at all, as snow isn't usually falling when it's very cold, but when it's slightly below 0 degrees. And as fas as I have been living, it has been usually so that there was almost no snow (no such snow that would stay on the ground without melting immediately) until Christmas/New Year. But in January and February it's usually cold and there is snow - such snow that stays on the ground sometimes even over a month (and often something like a week), so that you can forget how the sidewalks look like.

Of course it's both. It's eons old cycle and it's proven to happen many times in the Earth's history. Regardless of human made pollution or even human presence in that matter. I find eco-doomsayers hilarious. They seem to actually believe that we, mankind, are any threat to the Planet's existance. To Earth that is billions of years old and found constant meteoroid bombardment a tickling. Heh. "Mankind too stronk." :D

It's like an English weather, perhaps because it was blown in from that area...

Last year it lasted from Feb till April in the Beskidy. Grand fun it was too. No need to panic for the next 20 years.

Global warming is a bust though if you are a young investor.

If nearly everything dies and the only animals left are rats and cockroaches, the Planet will still exist, technically speaking. But the humanity will go to hell. Several thousands of people die each year in Poland because of our coal mines.

Weight-wise, 3% of land mammals are wild. Nearly 30% are humans, nearly 70% are livestock. I don't remember the exact numbers. There's hard data and methodology in books of Marcin Popkiewicz. Don't dismiss things you don't understand.

Even if you think it doesn't affect you because you don't live near coastline, you might change your mind when malaria shows up. Currently relatively cold climate is the only reason why malaria can't survive in Polish mosquitos.

I was in Poznań in Feb 2013 and there was snow on the ground the whole time I was there. Started to melt the day I went home.

I think these are cold snaps though rather than the long snowy winters the OP remembers.
It's milder generally everywhere, the last few winters in the UK haven't really been cold, last time I remember it snowed was the winter of 2009/10, and it was a very bad winter in Poland too with plenty of snow.

IINM we're in the middle of an el nino event (which can go on for years and reverse many local weather patterns around the world, not always the same ones).

Hehe. I was in Poznań in the same time. :) I recall it was around 8 degree Celsius when i was boarding plane in Stansted and -16 when arriving at £awica airport. I spent then 2 hours on train station waiting for PKS to Zielona Góra wearing a thin windbreaker and a jumper underneath. I got frozen to the bone. Several years in UK can make you forget how harsh is Polish Winter. :D

Ten degrees on the beach this afternoon and no wind. If winters were like that all the time one might consider retiring here, but as it is a temporary blip we should just enjoy it while it lasts :) Grand.

As far as I'm concerned the snow can stay away. Who needs it? There's nothing worse in winter than to spend hours shovelling the stuff and then to see it replaced with the same amount or more next day. Last year I hit a branch brought down by a heavy snowfall. Cost money for a smashed light and two panels. Snow? Keep it.

as I hear it's quite hot winter in Poland, is it going to cause any problems for winter resorts? I am planning to visit Zakopane, I hope I can ski at least yea ? :D

If you are a good skier on artificial snow then yes. Otherwise wait til February.

Blame it on Arctic methane emissions for no early snow.
