filled normal adults with disgust

Civil rights marches don't fill me with disgust. If that's abnormal, there are lots of us out there. Do you consider yourself to be normal? From what I read of your posts you are a very extraordinary person.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

Price increases will therefore be lower in larger supermarkets, which will help to increase sales at the expense of the small Polish businessman.

I'm struggling to imagine how this analysis can be wrong. Perhaps a PiS fan can help me out.

Off-Topic / Which PF expats are corporate "sleepers"? [55]

Polonius, if you had asked the question: Who do you think is the most likely PF member to have been paid for posting thousands of anti-PO posts? I would say you. I can't imagine any of the people you suspect being that bothered. PiS will self-implode in the next couple of years anyway, so no-one really needs to do anything to damage them. They do the damage themselves.

kidn of popcommercial crapol

Yesterday I watched an hour of TV at my in-laws' place. I was, as ever, astonished by the low quality. I watched part of some kind of cabaret (about 1600) and it was appalling. At first I thought it was a kids' show, but the audience was made up of adults. Apart from that, the commercial breaks, full of OTC meds ads, took up about a third of the time. Why anyone would sit down and watch Polish TV as an evening's entertainment is beyond my understanding.

UK, Ireland / Why Irish women are so rude and judgemental towards foreign women? [40]

I'm sorry that you've failed utterly in Ireland. It has certainly made you very bitter. If you work extra hard, it might not take a few months to save that 20 quid.

maybe I should write a book

Learn English first. Your current skills make you look a

simpleton

But I guess you've been told that many, many times already.

News / Poland's PIS go back to their old ways [194]

Best education you can get as it sets you up for life.

I'm no expert but I've read that although private schoolkids do better than those at state school (no doubt because of the much lower pupil to teacher ratios) they do not shine at university when the playing field is levelled. As for setting you up for life, do you mean because they are better at self-development as well as education, or because of the 'old boy network'?

Brits are notorious for their boarding-school obsession

6.5 - 7.0% of UK children attend private schools. Of these 15% board. If you are going to try to perpetuate an Edwardian myth, at least get your facts right.

News / Poland's election winning party: PIS proclamations [229]

The majority of voters

The majority of voters who voted voted against PiS.

PiS won the parliamentary election.

True, and no complaints from me. But who's calling the shots?

living standards have improved for the majority over the last fifteen years

This is inescapably true. The PO regime gave stability, which is what Poland badly needed. Low inflation over an extended period really helped a lot of people improve their lives. Those who complain about the PO years either don't know what they are talking about (and live far, far away), or have an agenda which precludes praise of their opponents, however deserved.

News / Poland's Parliament adopting a 70% severance tax of departing state company bosses [21]

That would mean that self-interest takes precedence over the common good.

Isn't that the main pillar of Capitalism? You condemn communists where you see them (in PO but not in PiS) but advocate socialism. You condemn capitalists but are a proud American. You can't have it both ways. Don't get me wrong, Pol. I'm a dyed in the wool left-wing social democrat and abhor the banksters, but I understand that human greed is a great motivator.

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

It's a primal forest

Parts of it are unspoiled remnants of lowland primieval forest. These parts are not under threat.

Do you think he's too competent to do this ?

I don't think any of them are competent to do anything, but I do not fear for the protected parts of BPN. I live in the area, and have, or have had, dealings with the Mammal Research Institute in Białowieża and many other bodies and scientists entrusted with the forest's well-being. In the strict reserve they don't even move trees that fall across paths (they cut a path-width section out if they really have to), so I can't see them cutting down five-hundred-year-old oaks any time soon.

the region of Puszcza Białowieska is to rise wood cutting limits fivefold.

If the trees are replaced in a sustainable way, forestry is a perfectly legitimate use of resources.

Puszcza Białowieska is the last primal forest in Europe, it's on the UNESCO list.

No-one is talking about felling ancient tree stands. If any government tried to touch the protected part of BNP, the global scientific community would go ballistic.

5000-7000 Poles die every year from diseases caused by burnt coal.

Unfortunately, accountants run the world, and this figure would be considered a price worth paying.

Food / Where to go for the best steak in Warsaw? [77]

Oxtail soup is another favourite dish of mine.

Very hard to get tails in Poland. Occasionally a distant in-law who works in a butcher's gets one for me, which I put it in my slow cooker for several hours. Poles think I'm nuts to eat a cow's tail, but oxtail stew is delicious. Perfect rib-sticking winter food.

Lidl have roasting beef from time to time, but blink and you'll miss it. Their Irish steaks are pretty good, too.

Life / Best area to live in Lower Silesia, Poland? Property in a countryside. [33]

Yes it is a nice place and the weather here is pretty good, Yes people here in general do not have allot to live on, but they do get on ok, most have extended families and smallholdings and everyone helps out.

-20 this morning here in Poland C Podlasie. My in-laws don't have material riches but they live well. On New Year's Day my MIL smoked some excellent sausages and gave me a few links, but before I left she cut me a sausage, some bread and her own horseradish. I sat there like a Lord's bastard! Who needs more?

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

I am burning Polish coal as we speak, it is really good stuff, more expensive than some of the imported coal but its worth it.

We paid 620/tonne for what I've just learned was Russian coal. I have to say it's pretty good stuff, although I remember buying some a few years ago and that wasn't so good, and had a few rocks in it. What did you pay this year, dolno?

Life / Cricket in Poland - Wroclaw, Katowice, Warsaw (casual group) [15]

********, there's one in Warsaw, so it is possible. Perhaps you could find enough people out of the city's 300,000 people who might be interested and start a club yourself.

oops. The PF computer doesn't like your name!

You are right, Dolno, and I know you weren't specifically addressing me, but if the scenario you suggest happened, I wonder how many of those Poles living abroad would really come back.

If you wish to help Poland in times of trouble, please work towards gaining your citizenship.

Did that years ago.

they would be capable of making an immediate contribution.

They could make an immediate contribution by coming to live in Poland and helping in this diffucult period after Communism,, but they prefer to live elsewhere.

If Poland and its democracy was in a dire situation (God forbid) , and there was a call to arms by our Government, the foreign embassy's in Warsaw would be inundated with Expats demanding a ticket out of Poland.

And I suppose the Polish embassy in Washington would be innundated with requests by third generation PolAms to join the fight, right? You don't know what would happen any more than I do, but to insult those of us who have made our homes here by calling us cowards is below the belt.
