USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

Bases in the British empire? Canada for the north of the USA or the Caribbean islands.

England America wouldnt be America

Wroclaw the colonies weren't built for America they were built for England, nothing is owed. Besides in 1776 this was still a wild country what had A LOT of needed development.

Harry Britain and Germany could never mobilize as many troops as America, or build so much equipment. You'd get drowned in a sea of men and equipment. Even Stalin admitted the war would have taken another year to beat Germany if it wasn't for Americas help. America armed itself to the teeth and helped the UK and Soviet Union at the same time.

I think it would have been very close!

The Japanese after building up for war couldn't even take on America's Pacific fleet alone in an all out battle let alone the entire US Navy. The British would have been a goner without the lend lease program.

Really?

Alternatively, America could have quite easily sued for peace in light of an onslaught from all directions.

Delph Germany didn't even have a long range bomber to go past the Urals and destroy Soviet war production how were they gonna go about bombing Detroit?

Alternatively we could have joined in Hitler's plan in the position he envisaged: the two great empires of the world defeating the USA.

Harry what have you been smoking? Germany with the UK wouldn't even come close. Yamamoto warned of American industry capacity. Before the war the American army was smaller than Poland's. In a couple years grew to the most powerful on the planet.

Detroit was the motor city, a capital of capitalism with a population of 5m+. The neglect of Stalowa Wola is not even in the same league compared to Detroit.

I know all about it visited Detroit in 2005. I saw most of downtown saw Warren, Michigan and a few nearby towns. The factories, old rail stations many neighborhoods look like Stalingrad never rebuilt. What you didn't mention (I don't wanna hear any political correctness on this one) is that Detroit is nearly 90% Black. Once the motor industry went downhill white folks moved out into the suburbs and blacks moved it to collect wellfare. Where there's people willing to work pay taxes there's cleanliness and order.

Poles started to get a taste for what the West has had for so long. Many flocked to their rich families in Chicago and sampled what they had to offer.

33% of Chicago residents are homeowners for the ethnic Polish community it's 66% exactly twice more. Shows hard work and ambitiousness.

If that was really all Poland has to offer, how can you explain the huge cars in my guarded car park, or the huge houses being built?

Delphie in my Voivodeship it was from people going and working in America or Western Europe for years and bringing their money back home. We had a friend of the family who was an electrician here went back with half a million bucks to start a business. What i'm saying is you can have a life in Poland but you need to make your money abroad first, unless you got a rich family or connections to get a job in a good company.

Gdansk is nicer than Zamosc? Or Sandomierz? I think you must have been sampling too much of the Zywe in Gdansk!

I know those areas fairly well, Ostrowiec, Sandomierz, Ozarow, Opatow etc... thats one crap part of Poland, real depressing up there.

He answered it. I know it's old towns weren't rebuilt and look like they have for centuries but have been neglected and look worn out and depressing. Stalowa Wola was a steel mill boom town nothing really there.

Which is why Polish-Americans will never be Polish.

No Polish people from Poland. Almost all the people I know who came here and recently say they'll never go back all Poland had to offer was low paying jobs.

Sitting in the Rynek in Zamosc sipping superb local beer that costs buttons and wondering at the beauty of the place and the lack of tourists.

I was in all those towns I was actually born and lived about 20km from Sandomierz in Stalowa Wola. They're ok nothing to be wowed about. Gdansk or Wroclaw have much nicer old towns. And the reason for lack of tourists in Poland Krakow can't really compare to Prague.

Haha no! A pound or 10 difference isn't even noticeable, especially if you're tall. My BMI states at 6'6 I should weight around 220 lbs. do you know how I looked when I weighted that? Like a tall toothpick. I weight 240 now put on some muscle now I look like a real man. Obesity I understand, but 10 or 20 pounds over is nothing.

During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and about one-third of American adults are now considered obese, the CDC says on its website.

We know all about it 2/3 of Americans are overweight and 1/3 obese. Do you know what's the criteria to be labeled overweight? weighing just 1 pound more than what than that 5 or 10 pound weight frame for your height states.

Imagine that, people bi***ing how tough life can be especially the last few years, didn't the recession hit the states yet? Well it's coming!

People b1tched that it got worse, from before, but it's still a lot better than in Europe.

Europe, the EU, is not a country but a loose union. No one pays anyone elses bills (unless it's some kind of emergency bailout package) all the countries money isn't put into one big pot for everyone to take how much they need whenever. Like I've said wages are similar but things are much more expensive in Europe, the bottom line how much you have left in your pocket counts.

Let me take a wild guess, you’re 20 now and never traveled abroad.

No i'm 29 and have been back to Poland 7 times over that time, also to Germany, Denmark, Canada, Mexico and Bahamas.

Yet somehow we manage, Amazing how that works, even if you consider yourself a middleclass in US, if you had to pay that much your check wouldn’t stretch enough to cover the very basics.

That's the thing you don't manage. Haven't you read what I wrote up top about friends even people on this forum have told me that it's expensive and hard to put any money away in Europe. In America you're able to it's just some people spend too much.

Stop nagging them for the lone and you won’t hear how tough they have.

I see I got to you LOL

So you believe.

I know :-)

Polish diaspora in US, the economic immigrants and political immigrants, in either case whatever they believed in be it the land of liberty or the land of milk and honey, that dream has vanished long time ago. Don’t kid yourself, those that seek their fortunes have a lot better opportunity in the EU these days

My family came here 20 years ago. What are you talking about? you guys pay 3 times more for gasoline, much more for life's basics (food, utility bills, clothing) more for cars home appliances almost everything. I got friends and family living in the UK, France and Ireland they're all frustrated saying they hardly got a penny to put away. You're remembering the EU before the recession (which was still off worse than the US) and not keeping in mind that at the same time life in US was still much better.

$15.144 trillion debt: no other country comes close.

It don't matter the economy is huge once the recession ends it will pay it off faster than the EU can even blink. This happens all the time, last time in 1980 and lasted till the early 90s. Experts say about 5 more years and it will get back on it's feet. Even so the recession is much worse in the EU. Wages are more or less the same you guys pay much more for food, gas (pertol) cars etc.

Most left during the cold war period, during the solidarity movement, way before the communism ever collapsed due to the Polish romanticism believing there’s still a part of the world where honor and riotousness prevail

What?? People left for money that's it.

But it still isn't Poland, which is why those of us who have the choice of where to live choose to live here.

See what I mean about the delusion of grandeur.

Yes that's why so many Poles left for the US. $14.526 trillion GDP no other country comes close. China is trying but it has a long way to go I'm not gonna even speak of it's per capita rank, a joke.

If America is so bad, why move here?

the opinions of some Polish people on these forums of America and it's people.

It's easily explained. People who have never even been here and make comments tend to either get a negative opinion about Americans from television and their own ignorance. The second thing is people are jealous, that this country is the richest, strongest militarily, huge in size etc.

USA, Canada / EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IN NYC DISRESPECTS POLISH AMERICANS! [88]

In New York City- Italian (692,739), German (255,536), Irish (420,810), Polish (213,447).

I've read in a local newspaper that the metro New York area has more Polish and Polish-Americans than Chicagoland.

USA, Canada / Where do most Polish-Americans identify on the political spectrum? [142]

Imagine stepping off the boat in Ellis Island and being asked where you're from. You're a Lemko, but you're aware that they're not going to know what a Lemko is

Because people already knew their ethnic background when they got to Ellis Island. Just how Poles who came here from a partitioned Poland, a Germany, Russia or Austria knew what they were it was passed down. So if he knew his family was ethnic Polish, Catholic, and with a Polish last name he almost certainly was.

USA, Canada / Where do most Polish-Americans identify on the political spectrum? [142]

Of course, that's only what they think they are.

Who is they, people putting it down on the census form? They know exactly what they are. I've heard people explain with detail who is who in their family and where they came from. It get's passed down.

USA, Canada / Where do most Polish-Americans identify on the political spectrum? [142]

There are at least 10,000,000 Polish-Americans.

Wrong. The 10 million you speak of are people who identify themselves (feel) being Polish. The stats are from the census. If you remember it asked to mark an ethnic group you felt was your main background. So if someone for instance was half Polish half Irish and looked and felt Irish he put that down as his main ancestry, it still didn't change the fact he was half Polish. 'Polish Americans form an important segment of the great mosaic of America, comprising the sixth largest ethnic group in America. More than 20 million live throughout the 50 states. Ten million are of full Polish heritage, while ten million share partial Polish heritage.'

News / Polish Domination by Germany [69]

The Zloty is doing good keep it. Poland's economy and prices shouldn't be affected by the situation in other countries. If Tusk will be still in power when they decide what to do, he'll most definitely be for the Euro.

News / Polish Domination by Germany [69]

Yea but Britain is and has been independent, economically doesn't need the euro or the EU. Poland is still a relatively poor country which relives heavily on foreign investment and trade, especially with EU countries. Plus I think people who are in control of the EU and it's budget (Germans) kind of put pressure on Poland and guilt to give back and be obedient for the funds it receives.

We should look beyond 2030

Yes but Polish mentality doesn't mean envisioning projects and building technologies today that will still be modern in 20 years. It simply means putting things away and away and so on.. pushing the start date to a later time.

Poland doesn't have the money for it yet. Like the guys said above if the rest of the rail system wasn't neglected so much during commie and post commie times the money would have been there to be spent on this project. It would have been nice thought :-)

The New Pendolino with a max speed of 250k/h and the moderately upgraded tracks can't become a truly high speed rail line. But all is looking good since PKP approved the 'Y" line and work will begin starting in 2014.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

I fully understood the film and the story behind it as i've stated about but some average Joe or nitwit might see it a different way. This what I was worried about there was no need for so many slurs against everyone different from him in the movie. I think this movie will have a better impact on the masses.
