Brits battle to save historic railway in Poland

A small group of Brits and their Polish friends are campaigning to save an historic narrow-gauge railway line about 50 kilometres north of £ódź threatened by local government indifference and new development plans. They are also looking for others to help in their effort.

Hi cyg, thanks for posting this. Hopefully the group can save railway but only if they can do something with it, so hopefully it would be a useful tourist attraction.

The railway can be used for a variety of purposes (people actually used it for local travel before it shut down), but I think tourism would be the most obvious. Unfortunately most Polish bureaucrats don't see industrial heritage as having any real historical value, and even if they do, they prefer shopping malls.

they prefer shopping malls.

one of those bad influences from the usa. :(

i sure hope they don't scrap it. railroading is huge in usa and i bet Krośniewice could fill every wagon, every day with americans. just advertise narrow gauge and steam... cha ching! lol

and i was a bit shocked that there is no more steam lines. i grew up riding one to my grandparents' country house. kinda bums me out.

“Poland’s industrial and railway heritage treasures are one of Poland’s best kept secrets,” says Mike Dembinski, group member and Head of Policy at the British-Polish Chamber of Commerce.

glad to see there are people that are looking out for the future.. interestingly sounds like most aren't even polish.. hmmm

I hope they can save it. If they do, a couple of magazines that they should 'advertise in', one would be 'Trains' and the other is called 'Railroads and Railfans'. That way people here in North America will become aware of something like that.

The other thing is to make a video from beginning to end of the equipment and the scenery along the line. There are a few model train shows here where videos are sold. That way the money raised from the sales of the DVD's will help towards the rehabilatation of the line. I do not have the name of the one dvd producer here. But I can obtain it within a couple of days. Too bad about one thing, I have done track maintenance for a short line here. Wish I could obtain work on the line to do that again.

Anyone have information as to what is happening with this line? What about workers for the line? Whether they be volunteers or actual paid employees? I would not mind getting in touch with whomever is in charge to find out if they need more workers.
