According to yesterdays paper British food exports are up, especially to central and eastern Europe. My now ex gf loved marmite, so what is everybody buying?

If it is true, I have advice to you: guys, run for your lives!!!!

I reckon the UK led the way in health scares related to food. It means that now we've got our act together whereas many other countries have never been forced to look at what they are doing wrong, and may well be continuing with dodgy agricultural practises.

Anyway, judging by how little UK food produce was ever exported to Poland, this statistic could be a reflection of the number of kanapki taken on coaches as packed lunches for the 30 hour journey back to Poland before Christmas.

Sorry, I stand corrected Harry. 1902, as Lir said, was the first to emerge.

However, NZ introduced their version in 1919 with subsequent modifications in the 1930's.

Well, ok, it is a British food. I like it so am proud that it is British.

What is British food?

Greasy kabob on stale pita w/'salad', 'pizza' made by an Arab, take-away 'curries'...And jellied eel with HP sauce.

...And jellied eel with HP sauce.

Really? I can tell you now that most British people (with that I include, English, Irish, Scotish, Welsh and Cornish people) have never even tried this..

HP sauce is a different matter - bacon is not the same without it!

I think we should have a bottle of HP as the new moderator.

Has anyone ever seen Colman's OK Sauce?

that looks disgusting, I`m glad I never ate a kabob, all this time I thought you guys were saying that Gyros and kabobs we the same.

I new it had to be different, Gyros are Beef and lamb combo on pita
with tzataki (sp) sauce.

They might me made only here by the Chicago Greeks coz nobody has ever heard of them...its like a Italian Beef Sandwich , Philly cheesesteak???

And it mysteriously grows when you're not looking. Any more than that, I probably don't want to know.

Actually I was joking about certain British food...I am sure there are some really excellent dishes...When I lived in London, though, I found much of the take out food to be 'funny'...But the food in the supermarkets was good: Very good bread (many varieties/brands), good canned soup, excellent cheese, good meat...And if you go to real ethnic restaurants and neighborhoods, the food was very good...The best fast food?...the 'Beigle Bake' on Brick Lane...Hot fresh bread and rolls 365/24/7, and huge salt beef sandwiches w/English mustard, mayo or horseradish for 2 pounds...You can't finish the sandwich in one shot!
