Language / I know Russian language - will it help me learn Polish? [105]

There are also no known critics of the full immersion approach. There is a Youtube video where the guy watched movies in Russian, not understanding what they were saying, but picked up a few things. The same with Russian music. It seeps in and you need to absorb yourself in it. Never underestimate the human subconscious :)

I listen to a lot of TATU and gain from that.

Food / what is this drink (I bought it in Poland) containing vodka [5]

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8416431.stm
it seems like the Poles have more opportunity than us Scots to drink. I agree with those findings, vodka is dangerous in high doses but whisky even more so. I found out the hard way recently that whisky can lead to very drastic side-effects, more so than vodka.

UK, Ireland / Its strange that there arent many Poles who live in the UK on this Forum [102]

Torq, I run rings round people in football, fancy my chances in a boxing match against most amateurs and have beaten strong computers at high level in chess. You were saying? ;0 ;)

The Poles didn't pass the etiquette/gentleman test for entry onto the course, my friend ;0 ;)

Love / Are Polish women too controlling? [106]

Bez 'a', Nika. My wife let me out to a dinner/staff function tonight, I was impressed ;)

More trust, less controlling, simple!!

Life / Where one can take HIV Test in Warsaw? [6]

Are you insured? I don't know about Poland but I got a free HIV test in Hiroshima after a little misdemeanour in Thailand. Good luck, there should be many clinics around.

The nightlife tends to be much better in the UK, right enough. You are never at a loss for good bars back home. The clubs in Aberdeen are well designed and have loads of drink options. You get all sorts but there isn't the same variety here.

If you are bored in Wrocław, don't try Gliwice.

Food / Traditional Candy/Food to give for Xmas to a Polish/Ukrainian native [4]

Some good advice there from frd. I'd also add kasztanki, they are almost universally liked and are exclusive enough to make a good gift. Kasztanki chocolates would be foremost on my mind. If you were from Britain, Thorntons would be nice.

UK, Ireland / ABERDEEN MEN ADMIT ATTEMPTED MURDER OF POLE... [15]

Byron, Logie, Middlefield, Tillydrone, Seaton, Woodside, Summerhill (one part), Mastrick, Northfield, Kincorth, Torry and Tullos. North Anderson Drive, Great Northern road areas and part of the south side.

Any Poles here on PF live in those areas?

Absolutely right! I lived there for 24 years of my life and know all the main areas. You can name so many areas that are run down. 10 quickly come to mind. Attacks on students happen a fair bit.

News / HUMANE TREATMENT FOR CHRISTMAS CARP in POLAND [55]

They had a whole batch of carp with no room to swim in Carrefour. I thought that was rather off. It was worse than cage treatment, they were tightly packed together and they should have done it differently.

Did you get the marriage thing sorted out, Floripa? It was you that asked about the Catholic divorce papers, right?

History / History of the crime ; Bandera, UPA and Podole Polish land. [116]

Well, there is a perceived need in Russia for such kind of ships. It's an expensive way to cut their response time (26 hours to 40 mins) but may be a calculated gamble.

You could start by doing a viability assessment of sorts, seeing it from their eyes.

A military pact? Geez, this isn't Warhammer! Just look at how the EU reacted to the Russo-Georgian conflict. Sending Sarkozy as a peacebroker to Russia was how they handled it, NOT militarily. You are dreaming again, with those grandiose romantic delusions of yours. Economic gain, is that all you care about?

Polish serfs again? I don't see what you envisage here at all.

Well, your lovely French partners in the EU are gonna sell them a state-of-the-art warship so why don't you ask that snake, Sarkozy?

You are treating Ukraine as a pawn and that's just not right. I was asking Borrka about the viability of accession from his perspective. If they want protection, NATO is the option for them and not the EU. YOU don't get it, Sok. Tell me, what do you know of Timoshenko in relation to Russia?

Life / Consider going back to Poland? [90]

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8410645.stm

maybe these people shouldn't consider coming back for risk of being caught. 4 of the 10 are Polish and that's unfortunate. Poland will be glad to see the back of those types.

You are right, Seanny. My core is positive and I always fight negative stuff. Some here love spreading a bad vibe around and that's their way but I haven't suffered from SAD before and I don't plan to start now. You just need to stake out your path and follow it. If people want to impose their negativity on me, they'll get a rude awakening!

Frd, that's right. I cannot imagine the frustration and anger at having laid tiles, only to find that sb had made a hash of another part of the job.

Nah, you didn't sound rude at all. How about some Poles here speak of successful teamwork in projects?! This will show the unity towards a given cause.

Life / Consider going back to Poland? [90]

Does 'if this is my life then take it' answer your question? I wanted to leave after 2 years. My wife has lived with me for almost 3 years now so I was focussed on making things work. I can only see complications now. How might I describe my life at this juncture? Awkward stability!

Listen to Nutshell by Alice in Chains and you will get an idea of some emotions am I currently going through. youtube.com/watch?v=N_GPxe91hWE, this says so many things.

I meant in people, not GDP. I try not to generalise right enough. Poland's GDP has really soared in recent years. I dunno, frd, I just see so many self piteous and hard done by types. It gets hard to live with that but I always encounter some good students who can lift the mood and enjoy things.

History / History of the crime ; Bandera, UPA and Podole Polish land. [116]

She is Ukrainian, Borrka. I can safely say that she speaks it fluently. Many Poles from the older generation, yes, with the younger generation it is a matter of choice.

It depends, really. They play in European competitions and engage in bilateral agreements already. It could lead to a heated employment issue were swathes of them to go to the UK.

No no, I was saying that my friend's ex was from the eastern part of Ukraine. She spoke Russian to the Poles until she got enough confidence to use some Polish.

Why should Ukraine join the EU, Borrka? Rather the EU than NATO for sure. Ukraine in NATO would spark future conflict no doubt.

I think I could find a better job there, no problem. You just need good contacts.

WB is right, it is a process of attrition here. Lack of appreciation, boorish behaviour and ignorance of duties are commonplace. I can't function in such an environment, there is neither incentive nor growth in this country. Religious people? Spiritually devoid is what I tend to see.
