Language / "sorry" instead of "przepraszam" [76]

So does przepraszam mean 'excuse me', or 'sorry' or both? For example, if you accidentally spilled someones pint at the pub you'd say sorry, but if you were trying to get someones attention or squeeze through a crowd you'd say excuse me - would przepraszam be used in both these types of scenarios?

Language / Best learning Polish CD/DVD set? [11]

Yeah, I'm using Rosetta Stone too; I compliment it by trying to use the language as much as possible (usually when I'm by myself, or drunk with my mates) it helps to remember stuff.

Language / Polish Soaps? & They Really do use Rosetta Stone [13]

Someone suggested kids cartoons in Polish to supplement other learning sources, but I couldnt find anything helpful on youtube. It would be nice to know of anything like this soap opera you mentioned if a Polish equivalent exists. As long as it's nothing like Hollyoaks. My fiance watches it all the time and it drives me mental lol!

Language / Common mistakes made by foreigners in Polish [90]

lol I suppose a Polish person wouldnt be too offended by a disasterous mispronunciation once they hear the accent and realise you dont speak too much Polish? Some of the mistakes I've heard in this thread remind me of 'Borat' on TV.... He does it in English but I suppose a lot of English speakers must sound the same or worse trying Polish?

Language / Polish Grammar In A Nutshell [19]

skwierzyna.net/polishgrammar.pdf
or 76 pages worth :P

Thanks for posting that, I've had a read at the start of it and it's quite helpful for getting a feel for spelling and pronouncing words.

Language / How long to get fluent in Polish? [41]

I remember the first time I wanted to put down drzękuję... It sounds quite simple, but gave me a headache first, i.e. "dzienkuje" etc. :))

I know what you mean - takes some getting used to, but I think the best thing about the software is that it simulates immersion in the language for people who wouldnt otherwise encounter the language regularly.

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

Yeah right ok.. you idiot!!....When comparing the achievements of Brits to any other Country......I think you will find us Brits will run rings around anyone!....They say Britain invented the modern world....What with the Industrial Revolution...Worldwide web...Computers...TV...Radar...DNA....Telephones...Jet Engines etc....Without us Brits i think all of you unachieved people would still be living in the Stone Age don't you think?

Without immigration we would have accomplished a lot less. Immigration enriches our culture and keeps our eyes and minds open to new ideas and concepts. It also prevents us inbreeding!

UK, Ireland / The Changing Face of Scotland - we need more immigrants! [178]

The reason why there are so many manual, menial low paid jobs vacant is because a Scot with no qualifications is in many cases better off on Benefits. It requires a strong work ethic to work a tough job when you'd be better off unemployed; whether it's out of pride, self respect or the fact that being jobless would bore you to tears. Therefore it would appear that most Scots in this situation are shying away from the low paid manual jobs and letting immigrants who are prepared to graft take the jobs.

Come on what is Britain anyway? What is any country, after all? - A piece of turf, land, and island. A load of fields and rivers with buildings and maybe a few hills or even a mountain or two. If someone wants to come here who was born somewhere else, why stand in their way? If the government's policies are flawed it's their fault and any critics should be writing to them. Immigration has enriched and improved Britain for centuries - the UK would still be in the stone age if people didnt come and go so much.

in scotland manual labour is an industry that attracts sub humans from the shallow end of the gene pool. unlike poland.

I have found that what attracts the people you have described is in fact 'no labour at all' - the countless thousands of benefits dependant Scots who have forgotten how to survive and depend on the nanny state. Foreigners coming here to work is a good thing and they should be welcomed with open arms. As a tax payer, I would rather pay for 10 Polish immigrants tax rebates than 1 lazy unemployed Scot who threw away every opportunity given to them by the state funded education system they disrupted for 11 years of their life. Manual labour may not require intellect in general, but it does require a strong work ethic - something most Scots no longer have.

quite good software, but I find that, I need to use a dictonary with it quite a lot..

Yeah, a dictionary can help, but only occasionally for some of the less obvious words. I just cant learn from books though!

The only people in Scotland I've heard moaning about immigrants taking their jobs are the people who have never worked a day in their lives. There arent enough workers here and the birth rate is far below the level required to replace the population. Plus Polish people who come here tend to be of the type prepared to do an honest hard day's work, unlike almost any unemployed Scot. The only reason to be out of a job today in Scotland is disability (which could mean almost anything today) or sheer laziness (which will probably soon be treated as a disability). Perhaps Noimmigration's colleague wont talk to him because he knows that he hates Polish people.... Or perhaps he is too busy working, while noimmigration is more concerned with his nationality and goose stepping back and forth in his mcdonalds uniform like a little fuhrer boy.

Language / How long to get fluent in Polish? [41]

I've started using rosetta stone and am finding it quite good. I learnt French at school for about 4 years and cant remember any of it, but I've been doing Polish on rosetta stone for a few months now and I can remember nearly everything I've learned. I'd recommend it. I go round the house and when I see something I know the name for I point and say its name in polish, like I see grapes and I say 'zielone winogrona!' my spelling isnt great, and I've yet to have a conversation in Polish, but I'm enjoying learning. Anyone else try this method?

UK, Ireland / "Nostalgia" - Polish shop in Glasgow [25]

So I'm out and about in Glasgow and I notice there's a shop called 'nostalgia' which claims to sell all things Polish... I looked in and it looked like mostly vodka and stuff - but isnt all vodka the same, generally speaking? If not, perhaps someone can recommend a brand of Polish vodka to me that you dont usually get in the UK!

Also, I was just wondering, what are the things Polish people living in the UK would normally go to a Polish shop for, rather than just getting them out of Tescos or something?
