UK, Ireland / Buying a used car from a private seller in UK. What is the law if... [18]

Surely if you buy a car from a private person and its a dud your not entitled to anything as its your own stupidity? I always check or send someone to check anything before I buy it, WR I just did the same and parted with nearly 5k over ebay for my 7 series without checking, 5000 miles later its still going strong with no problems whatsover so I'm happy :) British Airways fleet cars FTW!

Anyway back on topic this just sounds like the usual case of a pole in the UK expecting something for nothing as usual and not realising that 100 pln doesn't get you a bentley in mint condition, Typical.....

Just out of interest what did they buy and what went wrong with it?

All my English friends live in either jezyce which is rough as hell, Polanka which is really nice or Naramowice where I live which is mostly new blocks. I havent seen that many expats living here though really.

Life / Questions about IKEA in Poznan [20]

The poznan store is massive and just been extended, Not sure about delivery though as I hate ikea furniture and have never bought anything, They do take cards but if German banks are anything like uk ones expect for it to be stopped at random when using it in Poland.

News / POLISH POLICE PRAY FOR ROAD SAFETY.... [23]

I have a high powered Japanese rally spec (300hp+) car,

What is it? Skyline impreza or evo?

Shame that theres nowhere in Poland to unleash those 300 horses as the roads are so poor,

UK, Ireland / FIVE DIE AS POLE DRIVES WRONG WAY ON UK MOTORWAY [78]

Poland needs a stricter driving test its as simple as that, The roads need to be policed against dangerous driving (not just speeding). The driving test should include driving etiquette IE letting people out and when you see a car trying to enter a motorway/dual carriageway etc you pull over to let them in and simple things such as clutch control and learning how to park in a bay etc. It would also be useful to explain that overtaking should only be conducted on clear roads. Also is the breaking distance here measured in millemetres as opposed to metres?

I drove from Poznan to warsaw the other day and the quality of driving by other road users was laughable, Maybe i was just pissed off as I couldn't see to overtake anything and got stuck behind a truck for hours :)

UK, Ireland / FIVE DIE AS POLE DRIVES WRONG WAY ON UK MOTORWAY [78]

I can see how people get confused in urban situations ie turning into a road and driving on the wrong side etc little lapses in concentration can be responsible for that but going the wrong way down a motorway, autobahnm autostrada, autoroute or whatever you wich to call it is just down to pure stupity, The poor attitude towards driving in Poland could be to blame but never once have I had the urge to do a u turn on a motorway and drive towards oncoming traffic, Could this have been a suicide for some reason as it all seems a bit strange to happen out of error?

I bet that passat will be back in Poland in no time being repaired for use on the road again! It seems no matter how badly damaged something is it will make it back on the road in PL.

UK, Ireland / FIVE DIE AS POLE DRIVES WRONG WAY ON UK MOTORWAY [78]

I seriously don't know what the polish driving test teaches people, I have let several of my friends who have just passed drive my cars over the years and people who have passed the test in Poland don't seem to know how to operate a clutch smoothly, how to read the road or judge how fast they should enter a corner etc, In short they are terrible and drive in a similar way to I did in a field at 14 in a battered old cortina. I was recently teaching my younger sister to drive who is a far better driver than anyone I have experienced in Poland with smooth gear changes and an idea of how to judge space, speed etc and the same story echo's true to a lot of people I know when they first pass,

Obviously this guy didn't know what he was doing and made a mistake which proved to be fatal. Maybe a standardised driving test throughout europe is in order where drivers are taught these things to the same standard and maybe the roads in Poland need to be policed better in order to stop the reckless driving which occurs here.

Driving on the other side of the road to which you are accustomed isn't a difficult thing to do at all if people find it difficult maybe a bus pass might be a better option.....

Love / Looking for ideal place in Poznan to propose to my girlfriend. [14]

How about the end of Glowgowska near that big Auchan? You could stand on the bridge and there are panoramic views of the newly built motorway, A Furniture shop and you could always drop into mcdonalds when you have finished :),

On a serious note theres a big hill that just outside poznan, I can see it from my house but have no idea how to get there, I guess go to the end of Naramowicka and turn left somewhere, Its about 2km outside of poznan might be a nice idea...

Travel / Poznan - Warsaw Drive or take the train? [10]

Driving it is! Espana, what are you listening to in that video? Theres nothing more comical than 140 mph whilst listening to abba early in the morning on a polish motorway,

If the roads mostly like that then i might have to risk it by car :)

Travel / Poznan - Warsaw Drive or take the train? [10]

I'm not sure if the A2 is finished yet as I usually only go from nowy tomysz to Poznan, On the viamichelin website its says there is 160 miles of motorway but i'm not sure how accurate that is,

WB I drove through Wroclaw the other day and i don't understand how manage to negotiate those roads in a low slung sports coupe!

Travel / Poznan - Warsaw Drive or take the train? [10]

Have a few meeting in Warsaw on Monday, I've never been there before, Just wanted some opinions on what the best way of getting there is? I was going to drive as I do quite a lot of driving in Poland and utterly hate it but wondered whether the train would be quicker and more cost effective? Is the road any good? I was impressed by the road to Zakopane last weekend and also the way the majority of users actually knew how to use a motorway "keeping out of the bmw lane when not overtaking etc"

Advice welcome

Thanks in advance

Love / I can't trust Polish women any longer - where to meet a foreign girl? [123]

First rule of sales! don't list the bad points about yourself, when selling a car you don't introduce it by saying, the engines knackered, the body is rusty, its been in several high speed accidents and people have died in it previously,

Your above post was in all honesty pathetic, grow some balls man and concentrate on your positive aspects and not the negative all the time, confidence is the key. Talking about psychological problems probably isn't the best way forward either.

Travel / Tips for driving in Polish cities [29]

Disregard the above, KMH means MPH and the closer you get to doubling it the better, Never drive unless you are totally hammered as this is an offence. Trams are a moving target so try to hit them as much as possible. Ignore traffic lights unless red as this gives you time to take a swig from your hip flask. Overtake wherever and whenever you like as you really do own the road! If you are travelling in a bmw (only e30 and e36 variants) you are required to drive in a manner which suggests you are wearing diving boots made of lead. Remember not talking on the phone or smoking while driving is an endorsable offence so make sure you are doing one or the other. Also winter tyres mean you can drive as fast as you like in any conditions so make sure you do this. If you see an english registered car you must race it of every set of lights (even if it has a v8 under the bonnet and you are driving a gas powered cinquicento)

Finally make sure your car is fitted with an exhaust the size of a waste paper basket and has badly painted mismatched panels so you fit it!

Food / What is your favourite Polish meal?! [64]

Chicken curry and rice as cooked by my favourite erasmus student failing that anything i can get which has flavour and doesn't contain cabbage, mayonnaise, sausage or gherkins. Actually that narrows it down to rice or bread and the bread is vile

UK, Ireland / I have money in UK accounts. How to transfer it to Poland? [10]

I'll make some enquiries, I have just spoken to them and apparently regulations on money laundering prevent me from transferring the cash overseas and they asked me to pop into my local branch to authorise the transaction, I officially hate Uk banks, Homeless in Poland and no way of accessing my money, Great!

UK, Ireland / I have money in UK accounts. How to transfer it to Poland? [10]

I'll speak to my bank as it will be them sending it from my account, They seem very reluctant to use any of these money transfer agents for some reason, They asked me for the IBAN for western union and wouldn't believe me when i explained western union don't have an IBAN, its getting ridiculous now.

UK, Ireland / I have money in UK accounts. How to transfer it to Poland? [10]

I have a really urgent enquiry,

I lost all my debit cards a few weeks ago and am in dire need of cash, I have plenty of money in one of my UK accounts but they won't send it via western union as western union don't have an IBAN and a transfer to my Polish account would take days,

Does anyone have any suggestions as its really urgent,

Thanks in advance.

Life / WHAT WILL $1 and $100 BUY IN POLAND? [20]

A loaf of bread is 1.5 pln, about 80 american pence
A beer is 5 pln which is about 2 american pounds
Petrol has gone down and is a Bargain at 4.10 pln which is about 1 dollar 60
Cigarettes are 8 pln so 4 dollars.

You can live fairly well on 500 pln per week.

Life / You know you have been living in poland too long when.... [73]

The roads seem normal to you and when back in the UK they seem amazing.
You can cook chicken in breadcrumbs
you sometimes say Kurwa when something goes wrong instead of the English equivalent.
You start to accept the terrible food as normal.
You can drink 4 pints of beer and still feel normal
You can tell the difference between different brands of vodka
You drink bottled water instead of tap water and robinsons cordial
You think nothing about drinking alcohol at a lunch meeting
The blue collar workers swigging alcohol on trams at 6 am no longer alarms you.
You start waiting for the green light before crossing the road for fear of a fine.

Travel / Polish roads as recorded by myself earlier today [74]

You can make yourself look like an adolescent, and risk the lives of others driving a cheap ford.

Yeah but its so much better when done in style......

Can this thread be changed to "winding up the bearded vegetarians who don't like speed thread"?

Travel / Polish roads as recorded by myself earlier today [74]

It is a bit of a bragging post but still, its entertaining If everything on the internet was boring then we would all be sat in the office doing work *shudders at the thought*

You don't need an expensive car to drive fast, £500 gets you over 200 bhp and a top speed of 155 mph,
