News / could someone explain about finance shops please [11]

I visit a small polish town about once every other month and over the last few visits three or four shops have closed - clothing shops and a mini supermarket but I have noticed that around five finance shops seem to have opened - I think one is called the finance house and one is called go-bank - one even has a ATM in it's window...

Perhaps someone on the forum understands the sudden need for places to get money!
Are they different from the normal banks !

Thanks

Law / Savings advice in Poland ..any views would be appreciated. [3]

Hello
I travel to Poland from the UK around every other month. About a year ago I opened a savings account in zl and each time I visit Poland I change sterling for zl, some for expenses and some I put in the savings account.

Would you carry on doing this as the exchange rate is almost 5 zl to the pound - my thought was that if the rate nose dived again then I could withdraw the zl each time I visit to use as expenses but maybe at 5 zl to the pound I should just carry on saving. Of couse I would guess in the years to come Poland would join the euro and then my zl would be converted at an official fixed rate.

Any views would be appreciated.........
Thanks

Real Estate / Typical flat offer prices in Poland [17]

Would an estate agent be as good a way as any to find out the cuurent rental value.
I have noticed postcards in shop windows for flats to rent but none seem to mention money. My mate is currently paying - wait for it - 350zl a month - I assume that is ridiculously low by anyones standards even for Poland so I am guessing when he has his rental adjustment it will jump considerably....

Real Estate / Typical flat offer prices in Poland [17]

Although I understand unemplyment is rising in Poland I do not think it has half the troubles that the UK has and my guess would be that in a few years property prices will start rising again - however I have guessed wrong before and that was why I was seeking further advice.

Excluding all the pitfalls of selling to a friend (do not lend money to friends or family - very true) the opion seems to be biased in favour of holding onto the flat.

Am I correct in thinking that property prices are sliding down in Poland at the moment!

Real Estate / Typical flat offer prices in Poland [17]

That's because it's in a ideal location for their work and his flat is further from their work and it's rental agreement (I do not know the Polish terms for this) is coming up for renewal.

Real Estate / Typical flat offer prices in Poland [17]

Either it let's to friends now and again or I stay there. Excluding contracts etc etc
and I do realise the pitfalls - if it was your flat would you hang on to it for - let's say five years and hope you get a good price or take a 50 per cent profit now spread over 60 months. Putting it another way - in five years do you think the flat would be worth a lot more than it is now....

Thanks for any thoughts

PS A very rough valuation is about 25 per cent more than I paid for it two years ago
unless someone tells me otherwise

Real Estate / Typical flat offer prices in Poland [17]

I have a nice one bedroom holiday flat in a town a couple of hours from Poznan or one hour from Leszno - central location, railway station, bus station & shops.

A really good friend of mine is interested in buying it from me, my flat is not really for sale - I had planned on keeping it for years as a long term investment.

He has offered me almost 50 per cent more than I purchased it for two years ago but the catch is he wishes to pay monthly instalments over five years. I do not mind so much the monthly instalments but is it a fare offer !!

What does the forum think......

Life / Please recommend pre-paid sim card that will work in Poland and Germany. [11]

I know of a mobile phone shop where I am staying.... So if I purchase 100zl top up, the sim card is thrown in and I need to ask for a era tak tak. I know era is the phone company.

Are the rates reasonable to call the uk from poland and the same card will work in germany so again I can phone the uk. What is a typical amount of top up please.

20zl or 50zl!!
Have I got this all correct because I know already that the phone shop staff do not speak a word of english but luckily I know someone who can translate for me.

Cheers

Life / Please recommend pre-paid sim card that will work in Poland and Germany. [11]

As my two europe wide simm cards have just closed down - 09 & awayphone I am now looking to purchase another card. I only really need it to phone home to the UK from Poland and maybe Germany. I have my Orange Uk card as a back up but on one trip to Poland a while back my contract orange bill came to more than the cost of the trip.

Can I just go into a mobile phone shop and buy a prepaid simm card that will work in Poland & Germany.
Thanks very much

PS If someone has a suggestion for a card in order of preference
most reliable connection
easiest to top up

Travel / What to do on a sunday in leszno? [6]

I could just take them sightseeing in the centre during the morning followed by lunch but I would still need something to do in the afternoon. I was there the other week, started off with a little breakfast in one of those tiny cafe's outside the station followed by a little sightseeing and then a big ice cream in the square, more sightseeing and then lunch but afterwards....

Hello
On the chance someone reading this forum knows the Leszno area - any suggestions as to where I can take a group of ten people. I am looking for ideas - I can organise a mini bus, take them out to lunch somewhere and then...........

Have already visited Wroclaw the day before....

Travel / No Polish villages on google earth [13]

Thanks for the ideas. Tried them out but still the same. Will try and find IBM product but you would think there would be aerial shots of the whole of Poland not just city centres. Otherwise try the local council for aerial shots, that's going to be fun asking...

Travel / Who do you use to make calls to Poland? [33]

Have now paid BT £1 a month to get cheapish calls to Poland rather when the other providers do not work.
Wonder if London Chick (see above post) got through to her problem number!

Life / Opening a savings accounts in a Polish bank [27]

Just so I have this straight, the bank would give you interest on a savings account but then charge you for having the account...so unless you have loads of money in the account it probably isn't worth having the account in the first place....

I do not need ATM - a passbook would have been okay - just cash in and cash out.

Life / Opening a savings accounts in a Polish bank [27]

Are you saying it might not be worth the effort just to earn 100 or 200 PLN a year interest because that's exactly what a mate of mine said.....

Life / Opening a savings accounts in a Polish bank [27]

Hello
I was going to open a savings account with BZW the other week but the que was upto the door and after twenty minutes I gave up. Just before I try again when I visit Poland next month, any particular problems I should be aware of. I'll take my UK passport with me and I have a Polish address - assume I'll receive a passbook and can pay money in as and when and take it out in cash when ever I wish..

Thanks for any tips

UK, Ireland / Taking a UK-registered car to Poland [35]

Forget about cars, what about european lorries, no need for road tax and extra fuel tanks so they can avoid topping up with our overpriced uk fuel. That's why some truck companies have an office in europe now.
