Life / Why are the Poles picked on there is no reason to do this to them [108]

Lived in Silesia for 15 years, loving it. Before anybody thinks, oh......British, big house etc. I will say one word - teacher LOL.
Through thick and thin, and yes I have been in some scrapes, I would say I've never ever regretted coming here and I am proud to call Poland my second home and thank all who have made me welcome and continue to treat me as an equal.

Are you out there MIL?

Is this OT hehe - the Tyskie is starting to bite.........

Life / Why do Poles drink so much? [161]

Polish guys are hard working, sometimes possessive. Some of them - but mostly those who live in Poland, not abroad - like to drink

Sorry to disappoint - but Poland is 12 th in the league of European drinkers........
The UK is 8th, and Portugal is 1st (EEC study 2002)

Life / Polish people vs English language [42]

I was wondering how many (maybe percentage?) Polish people can speak English? I live in the US and met some polish people here and they seem to speak English very well. Do they learn English in Poland (I know my father used to learn Russian only ..smile

Polish learners in Silesia are very motivated. I am a TEFL teacher and a sizeable part of my role is just to encourage.
Good pronunciation skills apart from the obvious problems with long vowel sounds - very hard working, great fun to work with. Quick to learn, and I learn from them every day.

News / What sort of fellow is this Donald Tusk anyway? [34]

Tusk is severly lacking in charisma, and will be found out like Buzek was. I have met Buzek, and he controlled a thousand non partisan people in the palm of his hand.

That's how difficult politcs is, and that's why the twins have been successful although thjey have no policies apart from isolationism.
It is so much easier to destroy than build, which is why so many swallowed the PIS rhetoric of "let's get them." I was here in communism - a mate was bull shiting about a Hyandai car dealership in the city - I'd had a few and knew how to deal with a building that shouldn't be there - but he was shocked and frightened. I was serious and would have gladly acted as he felt stitched up by the guy in question........

Point -then, 20 years ago was the time to act - but Poland was shafted by the weak good christian Mazowiecki. Who I have absolutely no time for. Then was the time to break the undertaking and arrest the communists and strip them of any position and "their" wealth. Any time afterwards was palpably too late. The guy with the thick eyebrows and Nowy Swiat were correct

Under Tusk a lot of people who can, will get very very rich. I for one will be envious, but maybe some good will come of it for Poland. But Tusk has to help small businesses

which were being f****d by those socialist twins. And next, in my view, you should open the borders to more of Poland's "enemies" from the East, just as the "West" is opening it's borders.

Aren't politics and the shifting tide ever so simple in actual fact?

Life / Polish Driving Licence. [314]

FFS Hello - this is classic Polish ********.
You harp on about PIS being the way forward and yet you advocate corruption? Anybody who sells a driving licence needs banging up in prison - not being encouraged.

Likewise - anyone who gets into the police car to "discuss" the amount of the fine is as bent and corrupt as the officials. This behaviour is perpetuating the disease and people who do this are guilty of collusion. I always cut the discussion short - I insist on being addressed properly, as I treat the police with respect - I am not "Pan John" for example - and just pay the fine with the proper paperwork.

Having said that, since the latest run in 3 years ago I do the 60 km an hour where demanded and just leave home earlier.

And that is why I will never apply for a Polish licence. With respect, there is no way I would relinguish my UK licence for everybody, as our standards are......somewhat higher than the standards demanded by your government.

No offence meant people - but I earnt that licence the hard way by learning to drive on British roads. The legal point is mute, as a British licence for a Britain settled in Poland is null and void - so I would happily get a Polish licence but I must be able to keep my British licence for when I travel to Britain. For obvious reasons a driver can only hold one licence but there are lots of ways round that problem anyway still apparently.

My view is nothing to do with nationalism - the Polish authorities could even do a communist trick, and hand me my British licence at the airport, but as said, no way am I driving overseas on a Polish licence - as it is not very favourably recieved in my local car hire firm.............

Whoever wrote when in Poland do as the Poles do wasn't interested in empowering everybody and reminding them that communism is dead and the battle is won, and now the small things are the things that really matter and are worth doing battle for.

For example, your transport registration department are communist through and through and can kiss my royal arse.

How much difficult it is to pass the driving test in Poland ?

LOL - I have bad news for you. First time you have absolutely zero chance. The test is entirely subjective and consists of doing something that you will never ever ever ever ever ever do ever again.

Namely, reversing in a closed tarmac area through lines of tightly packed traffic cones. LOL mother of GOD.
The only reason they devised this test is to steal your money when a rear wheel touches a cone which seemed to have moved......
Hopefully PO will stop this nasty corrupt way of making money and actually test people on what they do in real life - ie take them out on the bloody road.

Doesn't this test make you guys feel ashamed of being the laughing stock?

News / Poland 2007 Elections: PO Won, PIS second [232]

This is because of NI contributions in Poland!

And what do PO intend to do about this ridiculous system where the hard-working are held to ransom and forced to work for the state to reduce their business NI contributions?

I seem to remember that consecutive governments from the SLD onwards have promised to do something about this socialist policy of milking small businesses dry.

News / Poland 2007 Elections: PO Won, PIS second [232]

I agree that Polish salaries are a scandal - but that is what the market will stand. I asked a "friend" a few years ago why he didn't pay production staff the minimum wage and he said he would, but as they would happily work for less, his directors wouldn't let him pay more than he needed to.

Appalling, and people are only just rightly realising the value of their worth.

News / Is the E.U. good for Poland?? [180]

I'm British Nigel - and am pro Europe. We can't compare the two countries. I vote Labour in Britain and would vote PO in Poland if I had the vote, and in many ways the two are different.

In my view the EC is good for Poland because, if for nothing else, and I'm sorry here all you Polish lads and lasses - but your government wouldn't have a clue what to do on very simple matters if they were not led by the hand and actually shown how things should be done.

I refer to mind blowingly "trivial" matters like free toilets in restaurants and in supermarkets.

I think EU should become partner of USA and we can cooperate in some cases, when atcked by other forces, like China or Russia we should help each other, but to be partner we have to have our European forces. And about being partner of sb we need to have constitution ...

Sure - and when did America help Poland in WW2? If they hadn't been attacked you would still be waiting.................

The relationship between Poles and America = individual Polonia wealth. Europe is where Poland's future lies.

News / Poland 2007 Elections: PO Won, PIS second [232]

Disgraceful - they should be reminded of their families' sacrifices since the war - unless they were party members of course :((
