Language / Genitive case ("nie ma nic" vs "nie ma niczego") [71]

Wise... ;P

PS - It might help if you remember such phrases in their correct form though. You'll sometimes be able to fool people, so that they think that you're better than you actually are. From one non-Polish native to another. Good luck.

Travel / Is it safe to take a train in Poland? [35]

Try Intercity. My husband and I travel quite often by train. His wallet was pickpocketed on the train from Krakow to Warsaw once, but a pickpocket can get to your purse in a supermarket as well.

The train is really onderful, and much faster than going by car.

Travel / Where is this address in Warsaw [7]

It is quite a distance from the square (if you're talking about the Old Town square). Maybe take a taxi there and then take the car from there? Make sure you have a map ;)

Real Estate / Renting Apartments in Warsaw. . . [8]

There are many nice areas. Best is to get in contact with the estate agents. Mokotów is a beautiful old area of Warsaw. Some of the houses there still have fruit trees in the garden.

Life / When to greet strangers in Poland or not.. [30]

The 'tram faces' that look right through you on the street was one of the most difficult things for me to get used to, because in SA I smile at many people in the street and they smile back. In Warsaw, people look at you as if you are from a different planet, unless... they have little kids with them and you coo about the little kids. I've had such fun with this game on the street ;)

In the countryside I've found people more open than in Warsaw.

how comes Poles say hello to each other specifically (and bizarrely to me) at the doctors, but apparently nowhere else.

It was like this with me when I just moved from SA to Poland, but as my language use got a bit better (and people say my accent is very good) they started greeting me in the doctor's rooms and in the train as well.

I see you have a Polish surname, but ask questions about Polish culture? How does that work?

History / WWII planes in Poland [38]

Warsaw Uprising Museum would know. Met the curator the other day. Seems he knows absolutely everything there is to know about the pilots.

History / WWII planes in Poland [38]

Who of you guys and girls knew that about 40 South African pilots were shot down over Kraków, Warszawa, Poznań and Malbork while dropping food and clothing supplies for Polish soldiers?

Life / Poland and doctors [37]

Just stop reading this forum and see a doc about it once you get here. See if you can get some before you leave to tide you over.

best advice so far.

Life / Polish Train Travel - Scary? [101]

we've been travelling frequently on Polish trains during the past 18 months. we've never felt unsafe or were robbed. A friend's wallet got stolen on a train, but I think it's like everywhere. Scary? Certainly not.

you bet!

Mmmmm... don't speak about chops to me though - a really good lamb chop I haven't found in Poland yet. I miss them dearly :( although there are many other things here that I like of course :)

Life / March 5th: Mother-In-Law's Day in Poland! [14]

I like mine too - FIL and MIL both. They're in SA though, where they haven't thought of such a day yet. There are enough other days in SA, so I shan't put ideas into anyone's mind ;)

Language / Jak sie masz -> niezle, doskonale. Wyglada ladnie - grammar questions [45]

Adverbs are used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb:
[1] Mary sings beautifully
[2] David is extremely clever
[3] This car goes incredibly fast
In [1], the adverb beautifully tells us how Mary sings. In [2], extremely tells us the degree to which David is clever. Finally, in [3], the adverb incredibly tells us how fast the car goes.

Before discussing the meaning of adverbs, however, we will identify some of their formal characteristics.

Google adverbs to make sure what they are.

David is clever
I am clever

David is not bad / excellent
I am not bad / excellent :)

On the other hand, in the following sentences:
He is a clever boy
She has a beautifulvoice
This is a fast car

these same words are adjectives :)
