Life / Question for British Ex-Pats in Krakow [18]

It is now closed down, the one just off Grodska Street

That's the Irish Arms, they declined to renew the lease on it. The same owner as the Irish Embassy.

Irish Bar is still going on Jana street, though its not really my kinda place since the ex works there :D

Food / FRIED (OFF & SLIMY) CHEESE, ANYONE? [13]

If it's Polish, and cheese, ill stay away. I have a deep hatred of Poles destroying the noble art of cheese making. No matter what name they give it, it's always gouda plastic :(

News / Will economic crisis hit Poland? [38]

Its called panic, and it is an infectious thing. Once one company begins, the next falls. My business in Scotland has been doing well, only because i refuse to be drawn into this crap.

Travel / Ukraine / Poland border travel [12]

Merged: Advice needed, Trip through the border to Lwow, Ukraine

I'm going for a trip to Lwow in a couple of weeks, and need some answers to some questions:)

Has anyone ever been, what was your experience of the city?
Is it costly, i mean how much would i need to take for a nightout, or tours?(though i prefer to look around myself).
Has anyone got any contacts in the City i could use?
Going through the border, is it a long and boring experience?
Any other info that i need to know of?

Thanks in advance:)

News / Will economic crisis hit Poland? [38]

I dont think that is true at all. The crisis has hit the UK hard, but the Polish Z has fallen to the same level 4 years ago. Coupled with the fact that students in Krakow are even finding it hard to get a job in McDonald's.

News / Should Poles become a minority in Poland? [150]

A Polish workmate told me Poland is starting to receive a lot of Afghan immigrants... You'll be heading our way unfortunately.

I doubt Afgan workers, but Poland is now seeing an influx of South eastern asian migrants using Poland as a stepping board to western Europe.

Life / What should be done to make life in Poland better and more enjoyable? [94]

Once I learn the Polish for "you have the change, you don't need to ask"...then it's getting repeated constantly. I even witnessed a woman in a sports shop in Galeria Malta (the brand new shopping mall in Poznan!) refuse to take a 100zl note for an 18.00zl purchase. Why on earth didn't she have change for that in the till?

That really pisses me of too, i mean, for feck sake, your a shop, we have just made you more profit, at least have the decency to accept our money. Geeeez isn't money good enough to buy things nowadays???

Life / Is it possible to have a NIP without PESEL? [16]

I love this uote from the website
"
I just returned form the Urząd Miasta and was told something different - the regular guy was there and he claimed that he did offer me a Pesel and I declined it. I find that hard to believe (why would I decline a Pesel?) but maybe I misunderstood something. He said that it would now be difficult to issue one. After a few phone calls and playing with his computer he said he would delete me, start over again from new and do it. So in the end it was sorted and I didn’t have to de-register and re-register. He said I had to return in a week to collect it. I asked if I could just call by phone and he said no. By this time he was getting grumpy so I didn’t try and push my luck any further…"

Hehe, this is Poland, where every public servant is a wind up merchant.....in other words, c*nt :)

Life / Is it possible to have a NIP without PESEL? [16]

This aint the case, it is possible to have NIP without pesel, for shorter visits to Poland. From my understanding you can only get pesel if you are from Poland. It's something that confuses me too when paying taxes, to the point i gave up and don't bother with the pesel.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

Exactly, there are a few classes which the majority of teachers hate, but for some reason i love em. They complain that the classes dont open up and are to stiff. For example tonight, one teacher asked me to swap with him cos a couple of students gave him a hard time, and he thought they just wanted to stare at the teacher. I had same complaint from another teacher, but everytime i take this group, they are full of laughter, eager to learn. Horse for courses most of the time i guess.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

We ran a teacher of the month competition, which no native speaker won. I don't think it came down to who was the best teacher, but teaching lower levels without using Polish can be quite tricky to a new teacher. If Polish was banned during the lesson, i think that situation would change very quickly. But theres just some things that Polish can explain better, i even explain crap in Polish too.

Love / Need help in relationship with a Polish man [33]

It sounds like he just has no confidence in speaking English, but only with you. Maybe he is meeting his friends as they are also the only people he can feel confident speaking with. When i first came to Poland, the majority of my friends were English speakers, took me about a year to adapt and feel confident with the locals. You just got to push him to be more confident, and explain its totally fine if he makes a mistake.

UK, Ireland / Poles flee N. Irleand homes after World Cup riots [70]

If it were indeed Polish hooligans who started it, then they deserve to be brought infront of the law. I doubt any Poles living in N.I would have started this trouble. They would have known about the tension in N.I on a daily basis. I've yet to see a Pole say anything bad about the Polish hooligans at the match. Although the whole thing was blown out of proportion, you don't poke a sleeping bear with a stick. Alot of work went into maintaining the peace over there, whoever is at fault, should hang their heads in shame.

Life / Shower versus Bath in Polish home - which is preferred? [5]

Showers are more common, usual flats will have a small bath with a shower connection in it. So therefore shower curtains are quite common. Not many places have 2 bathrooms, sunless they are houses owned by quite rich people.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

I moved on from then though but it was a fun experience at times.

As teacher who began at the beginning, thats a fair rate. Now im guessing we command about 50-80pln a month because we have the experience, and schools run around stupid actually trying to hire someone who knows his stuff for many years.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

Ah but not all schools can afford to give the books to teachers, plus this method for experienced teacher need no prep. I've offered to help him out if he wants it. I manage one of the schools he works at, but not his school. Nothing like throwing a newbie into the deep end ;)

each class is 50 mins so i guess its 25 netto for 50 mins. when i go in tomorrow i will ask all these questions, i wanna sign something! shit wasnt this complicated in england...

You will be paid in cash, with no tax, trust me thats a good thing, they wont sack you cos they are scared about the tax situation.
