Language / Why Polish people use so many words to describe a situation? [122]

What, because I admitted a typo? Well, heeheehee, how funny. I almost died laughing ;)

No seanus it the fact that you think that you are an expert in every subject under the sun:) It was a classic that you picked fault with a members grammar, only for her to point out a clanger of yours, one post later.

Language / Feminine Nouns Ending In A Consonant [11]

Feminine nouns ending in a consonant can be tricky for the beginner, because they could easily be mistaken for masculine nouns. It would be of great help to the novice, to have a list of feminine nouns that don't take the usual ending: e.g. -a, -i, or the abstract nouns ending in -ść. Please add to the list if you can think of any more, or come across any.

chorągiew - flag
gałąź - branch
jabłoń - apple tree
łódź - boat
nić - thread
noc - night
pamięć - memory
pieśń - song
podróż - journey
pomoc - help
rzecz - thing
twarz - face

If you would like an English translation of this program, then pm me with an email address and I will send you a pdf file. You won't be able to do this though, until you have at least 3 posts. :)

Language / PRONOUNCING NASAL VOWEL "Ę" IN FINAL POSITION? [11]

One thing I've kind of noticed is that first person -ę is maybe more likely to be nasalized when it would otherwise be identical with the third person, so piszę and chcę are more likely to receive nasalization than muszę or kupię

Good point. If the final "ę" was pronounced like "e", in this case there would be no difference between 1st and 3rd person singular.

Life / Beware When Buying a Computer in Poland [28]

Install a good Linux distribution. :-)

I don't think Linux is for the one that most people will go for, when buying a new pc. Microsoft will tell you that 90% of the world's PCs use their OS.. Nearly all software is designed for windows, and installing printers etc is usually plug n play. Linux can give all kind of issues with, installing hardware drivers etc, and is only for computer geeks, and people who think that getting something free saves them money, which in the long run is false economy.

Many people complain that windows is too expensive, but this is in the cost of a new pc when you buy it. I can't think of anything else that gives good value for money in the last ten years that computers do today. When I first bought my first one in 1998, I paid £1300 for a Pentium 2, 350mhz, 9 gig Hd and 128 mb of memory. Now today, a machine that is 20 times more superior to that will cost £400, and a good laptop the same..

Windows has made the pc easy to use, for the consumers, and has made the computer the good value for money that it is today. Windows xp has played it's part in all this, and in my opinion is still the best OS that money can buy.

Life / Beware When Buying a Computer in Poland [28]

If that's the case, then me and a few billion others . If Linux is so good , then why has Microsoft got their Os installed on 90% of the worlds computers?. I think this fact speaks for itself, people have voted for for their favourite Os, and it is not Linux.

Life / Beware When Buying a Computer in Poland [28]

Yes I tried suse 10 a couple of years ago. It was very hard to get on with, and went back to xp. I know a few people who will only use Linux and they love it, but it is not for me and a few other people I guess. Linux seem to have been going for years, at least back to windows 95 or longer, but compared to windows machines they have not made any advancement on the world market, 1% I think.

Travel / Possible wrong name when ordering tickets to PL, will there be a problem? [6]

In my experiences with wizzair and easyjet, when you book in at the airport they are just interested in the booking number. If the name on the passport is exactly the same as the one associated with the number then all is well. If a mistake was made and it is not the same as the passport then it will have to be changed at great cost to the traveller.

If it is only the address where you live then it is not a problem, but to put their mind at rest, it would not hurt to contact their customer services and ask. There should be no charge to change your address.

edit ...shelley beat me to it.

Real Estate / Construction (Poland Vrs where you are from) [66]

Somebody asked me about insulating houses here

Thanks Sean, that was probably me. I was/am interested in the construction of polish homes, as I have been in the construction industry myself for a few years. A very kind gentleman form PF has since sent me many photo's taken from a project (13 apartments) that he is building 'up country' from you. The photo's show the project from foundations to roof, and at the time he had not quite reached insulation point, so your pic's have completed the jigsaw for me.

I think I know the gentleman in question, a fine man indeed

Yes indeed. It turned out that he only lived 3 miles from me for many years, but our paths never crossed, unfourtunely.

Language / Polish Language Pronunciation - Example Words and Phrases [178]

I think everyone learning polish has trouble with these three letters, because we are so used to pronouncing them in English. The only cure for me was to repeatedly listen to these letters, in Janusz's excellent alphabet videos :)

This rule applies to everyone.

Calicoe, have you looked carefully at the Forum Rules and Code of Conduct to see if there is a clue there, to why your posts may have been removed?

UK, Ireland / Dublin city centre - interesting places to see [33]

Would recommend a visit to the Guinness storehouse, which is not too far from the centre.

Located in the heart of the St James's Gate Brewery, GUINNESS STOREHOUSE® is Ireland's No. 1
international visitor attraction.
