Language / Changes in the Polish Language [11]

but in EU there's no official language - unless it's German?)

Not strictly true mate.
There are 20 official languages (23 in 2007) in the EU and when every new state joins, they stipulate which language they want to have recognised as "their official language" within the Union.

All documents, treaties etc have to printed in each language...can you imagine the bill at the printers!

TIR? Transports Internationaux Routiers?

Love / Do Poles consider getting married more than other nations? [21]

Nah, he didn't invent divorce.
He did something much more cool and befitting of a king; he invented a new brand of religion, with him as boss, so he could get divorced whenever he felt like it, instead of having to kiss the Pope's infallable backside in order to get permission. :)

Gotta love being a King.

Feedback / National Admin appreciation day! [18]

Ouch, I feel your pain, it'd be like living opposite Alton Towers on Bonfire night...i think i'd be wanting to head out and shove a few lit fireworks where the sun doesn't shine. hehe Even double glazing doesn't help in this situation.

Hope they put a lid on it soon, or it starts to absolutely p*ss down. Think that's gonna be your only salvation.

kids dont seem to do penny for the guy these days....

What with costs of modern living, it's more like a quid for the guy these days eh? :)

Life / Polish Parents are controlling [58]

Sounds like my GF's mum (obviously Polish)
Nothing she does is right and even if what she does is flawless, she'll find something.

So, you made a wonderful, tasty lunch and kept us all entertained...yeah great...but it took you long enough and you should have used baby carrots not normal ones and...

I know it's a silly example, but that's the point. She just *has* to find something to criticise, no matter how trivial or pointless.

Never noticed my mum being like that... strange. :)

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

hehe that's made me all christmassy and also made my mouth water...thanks Amethyst :) What's that rumbling? A train? A far off avalance? Nope, just my stomach

I was really shocked by the fact poles eat fish on xmas eve, I think i just automatically assumed a British xmas was a universal xmas but, I guess it actually makes a lot of sense from a religious pov...though that said my lass much prefers the English version of christmas...as she said last year; it's a lot tastier! :)

btw do you set fire to your xmas pud? (I never got that, why pour lots of alcohol over a cake, just to burn it all off again!) Of course, followed up by lashings and lashings of brandy sauce...? (Sensing an alcoholic theme to my household...but we're all T total, promise!)

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

I managed to set her on fire.

Oooppss!!!
What are you buying her for xmas this year? A fire extinguisher? :) :)

Really, you have an English style xmas on the 26th in Poland too? Ahh ok (background needed) We all live in Austria, so I just assumed they were having an Austrian (English) style xmas afterwards to not seem rude or whatever...

Oh ok, thanks for the info you two! Very interesting... Actually, question: Is there any one dish that no Polish xmas would be complete without?

UK, Ireland / BEWARE when coming over UK [363]

WE WANT OUR GOVERNEMNT cancel EU membership

What a complete idiot.

Yeah, what has the EU ever done for us?
Enter Monty Python:

FRANCIS: We're gettin' in through the underground trian tunnel system here, up through into the main continental shelf here, into Brussels and the EU commisioner's wife's bedroom. Having grabbed his wife, we inform the EU that she is in our custody and forthwith issue our demands. Any questions?

COMMANDO XERXES: What exactly are the demands?
REG: We're giving the EU two days to dismantle the entire apparatus of the European Federalist State, and if they don't agree immediately, we execute her.

MATTHIAS: Cut her head off?
FRANCIS: Cut all her bits off. Send 'em back on the hour every hour. Show them we're not to be trifled with.
REG: And of course, we point out that they bear full responsibility when we chop her up, and that we shall not submit to blackmail!

COMMANDOS: No blackmail!
REG: They've bled us white, the bastards. They've let all these foreigners in and let them take everything we had, and not just from us, from our fathers, and from our fathers' fathers.

LORETTA: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers.
REG: Yeah.
LORETTA: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers.
REG: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?!
XERXES: The Free Trade Area?
REG: What?
XERXES: The Free Trade Area.
REG: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.
COMMANDO #3: And the Peace.
LORETTA: Oh, yeah, the Peace, Reg. Remember what Europe used to be like? All that fighting and killing each other.
REG: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the Free Trade and the Peace are two things that the EU has done.
MATTHIAS: And the Urban Regeneration.
REG: Well, yeah. Obviously the Urban Regeneration. I mean, the Urban Generation goes without saying, doesn't it? But apart from the Free Trade, the 50 years of Peace and Stability, and the Urban Regeneration--

COMMANDO: Agricultural Rebate.
XERXES: Free Health Care in all EU countries.
COMMANDOS: Huh? Heh? Huh...
COMMANDO #2: Education, recognition of our qualifications abroad.
COMMANDOS: Ohh...
REG: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
COMMANDO #1: And the duty free wine.
COMMANDOS: Oh, yes. Yeah...
FRANCIS: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if we left the EU. Huh.
COMMANDO: The European Court.
REG: All right, but apart from the Free trade, the Health Care, Education, Duty Free Wine, Court of Human Rights, Urban Regeneration, an Agricultural Rebate to help protect out farmers, a paneuropean governmental system, and 50 years of peace and prosperity, what has the EU ever done for us?

ALL: Nothing!!!

UK, Ireland / Documentary Project on Polish community in UK [11]

I didn't realise there were so few Poles living in England on this forum!

[tongue_firmly_in_cheek]...and they say we're (England) being swamped by 'em. Guess they're all too busy stealing our jobs and taking away our women to be bothered posting on an internet site eh??[/tongue_firmly_in_cheek]

UK, Ireland / BEWARE when coming over UK [363]

No offence shelley, as I know that you and I see eye to eye on a lot of things, but I think the whole point about Britain is, that there isn't one thing that can define it. (Other than maybe lousy weather and breakfast being served 7-9) imho the second you can put a label onto it, then it's time to worry.

We always seem to take the best ideas from other cultures and assimilate, i guess we're a bit like the borg (shameless Trekkie moment) in that respect..but, i don't think that is a totally bad thing.

You're right though about one thing. On the scale we're seeing this influx now, it is getting to a lot of people and therein lies the problem. I don't think we mind other cultures coming here, but we do mind when we start to feel (or perceive) that what we hold dear is being threatened.

UK, Ireland / I understand poles coming to uk [196]

Think of them like missionaries Chris; they're in the uk to spread the good news that their country is great! :)
Or maybe they just like pissing you off... :) Your mileage may vary...

UK, Ireland / I understand poles coming to uk [196]

Hence my reasons for being pro-British, I care about this land

See mate, once you're not being so angry, you don't sound so bad...
I'm pro British as well, hell it's my country too but, I just think that the whole point about the UK is, that we are tolerant and we absorb other things from other cultures into ours, in order to make ourselves better in the long run.

When we start yelling, F off back to Poland <Insert country of choice here> we forget what it is to be British. Tolerance, fair play, mindless violence on a friday night... :)

Look on the bright side.
In a twisted way, the fact so many poles came to the uk, will actually help prevent a repeat of such a thing in the future. The government were caught with their trousers around their ankles; no one expected it and now, when it is the Romanian turn, there will be a system in place to prevent it happening again. That's something positive right? :)

Besides, the majority of the poles in the uk won't stay forever and when they leave, i hope that leave with fond memories of the uk.
