Law / Residence card-Karta pobytu issuance [5]

If you have to show your passport, keep your decision letter in it. You'll be fine with this. It depends where you're going, in the Schengen zone or not. Don't stress about this. With your decision you can go anywhere that doesn't require another visa.

Law / Residence card-Karta pobytu issuance [5]

If you have a favorable decision you're good to go. It always takes e about four months to get my card after receiving a decision and yes, you have to go back to pick it up. They may call you or you may have to call them. Eventually you'll get it. You won't get a special stamp in your passport. That's what the card is for. Congratulations.

Oh, I also have a US passport, not that it makes any difference. You shouldn't need any more documents to get the card itself, except make sure to take your passport with you. The card simply provides you with proof that you have legal residency. You may never have to show it to anyone and I don't carry it or my passport with me.

Food / Is lamb big in Poland? [53]

A Weber? In Poland? No, and I've never seen one. I've just got a cheap open grill, and I haven't seen any charcoal, or what passes for it, since summer. Webers are great. Assuming I had one, how would you suggest that I BBQ lamb on it? Dang, I'm getting hungry now just thinking about it it.

Life / Share your Polish Christmas experiences. [20]

I don't like beetroot soup and I detest carp, pickled herring is OK from time to time. It doesn't matter this year as I'll be in Germany for Christmas.

Food / Is lamb big in Poland? [53]

Hmmmm, never thought of that. How would you barbeque a 2 1/2 kg roast? Wrap it in foil or some other way?

Food / Is lamb big in Poland? [53]

Lamb doesn't smell. Mutton does.

It's not easy to find lamb in Gdansk, because it's not very popular with Poles. My favorite shop has some now, and I'm going to buy a roast tomorrow and make curry from the leftovers. In 2 1/2 years I've only been able to buy one leg of lamb. Oh well.

When in Rome...

Travel / Travel for learning about living in Poland, Suggestions? [19]

On the 21st I teach from 16.00-19.30 and on the 22nd from 16.00-21.00. On the 23rd I'm going to Germany for 10 days. If you have any free time during the day on the 21st or 22nd, I'd be happy to show you a little of the Old Town.

Travel / Travel for learning about living in Poland, Suggestions? [19]

There are IT jobs in Gdansk. Wirtualna Polska, an isp, has an office here and everybody who works there loves it. But I think you'll have to speak Polish to work there.

Tri City is Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia. All are nice and have different attractions and they're all on the Baltic, but Gdansk has stolen my heart.

When do you plan to visit Poland?

Travel / Travel for learning about living in Poland, Suggestions? [19]

Thanks for your reply. I don't know much about the IT market in Poland, but there are some members here who do. I think Warsaw may offer the best opportunity, but I don't think it's not a stressful city. Those who live there will probably disagree with me, and I'm sure we'll hear from them soon.

There are lots of posts on this site about about positions in IT. Read them, decide which ones you find useful and which cities they're in, and then you can plan your visit. When are you coming? Polish winters are a little colder than in Barcelona.

Good luck with your quest.

Gdansk? I live here and wouldn't live in any other city in Poland, but we all love the city where we live, so I'll ask you a few questions. Where are you from, how old are you, what do you like to do, what are you looking for in a city, etc ad nauseum. A little more information about yourself will get you you a lot more answers.

Food / POLISH BREAD..... isn't it great... [22]

Don't you guys have any small bakeries where you come from? Polish bread is excellent, but I could buy the same bread in California. What Poland doesn't have is sourdough bread, and I miss it.

Language / Not sure if I will be able to speak Polish [53]

In English you need experience to know how words are pronounced, in Polish you don't need this experience, you just need to know how all letters (and 2-letter combinations) in the alphabet are pronounced.

This is true. There are nine ways to pronounce -ough in English. And how do you pronounce live unless you read it in context. I could go on ad infinitum. I speak French, and Polish is much more difficult. As a Polish friend said, Polish is easy. The only hard part si the first 20 years.

Food / Polish Fruit Juice used to mix with beer [6]

When I read fruit juice, I think of orange juice, grapefruit juice, grape juice, etc. Not sok as in the syrup used here in beer. Maybe it's just a language thing. I have drunk beer with spicy tomato juice and I like it from time to time, but a tomato is a vegetable, not a fruit.

I've tried the warm beer here and I don't like it very much, but the hot spiced wine is a very different story. I love it. Hot buttered rum is good too.

Who said that you can drink beer ice cold only and why?

God decreed that it be so.

Food / Where to buy whole turkey in Kraków [5]

Frozen. I think Piotr i Pawel has them also but I'm not sure. Good luck finding a whole fresh turkey in Poland. Maybe if you go to a small shop and order one in advance, you'll be able to get it at Christmas. That's what happened to me last year.

Food / Where to buy whole turkey in Kraków [5]

I bought a 6 kilo turkey at BOMI in Gdansk, and Tesco also has them. I don't know if you have them in Krakow. Good luck!

Work / Maybe moving to Poland - Help and Advice [7]

Don't waste your time with an online course. Get a CELTA. Many/most good schools won't hire you without one. It doesn't matter where you get. Just get it.

Food / Polish Fruit Juice used to mix with beer [6]

I've never seen beer mixed with fruit juice in any country, including Poland, so your project will be mercifully short. They put a couple of squirts of sok in a glass and add beer. While sok means juice, what the really use is more of a syrup.

I wouldn't say there are a lot of British people here, unless you consider a handful a lot. BTW, I'm not one of them.

Food / Where to buy a turkey in Gdansk? [11]

Harry
Unfortunately that group isn't populated by serious drinkers, but I had stocked plenty so it was all good.

I put the turkey in a couple of sealable plastic bags, poured in a bottle of red wine, and put it in the fridge. I let it sit for a day and turned the bag every few hours. Cooked it for five hours and it was great. Now I've got a pot of turkey stew simmering on the stove.

BTW, you can get goose and duck in Tesco Chelm.

Yeah, the price is outrageous, but it's only once a year. Where are you going to find a goose?

Food / Where to buy a turkey in Gdansk? [11]

I didn't go to Tesco. I live in the Old Town and I don't have a visa for Chelm, so I found the last 6 kg turkey in BOMI Madison and bought it, even though it was 25 zl/kilo. Ouch. Well, the other teachers are chipping in 10 zl apiece to defray the cost and we have a turkey.

My turkey is about 30 cm long x 15 cm high and about the same width. isa, will that fit in your oven?

Life / What is there to do in Warsaw?? [37]

Not only can you lose your license, you can spend up to 11 months in prison. I'm not kidding. This happened to two Polish guys I know, and it was their first offence. Don't drink and drive. Don't drink and ride.

Food / Where to buy a turkey in Gdansk? [11]

Thanks for the replies. I'm not going to Gdynia to buy a turkey. I just don't have enough time to do that before Saturday and I don't want to lug a bird back to Gdansk on the train.

One of my students saw frozen turkeys in Tesco in Chelm (10 minutes by tram from where I live) today so I'll go there tomorrow morning and buy one. I'll need time to defrost it and soak it in wine before I cook it on Saturday. Mmmmm. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Food / Where to buy a turkey in Gdansk? [11]

Fresh or frozen. My school is having a Thanksgiving dinner this Saturday and I can't find a whole turkey. Butchers tell me that maybe they'll have one at Christmas, but I need one now. Can anyone help?

Life / IS THERE NFL PROGRAMS IN POLAND [60]

Who caught "the catch" from Montana?

Dwight Clark.

And I've been hearing for over 40 years that soccer (football to the rest of the world) is going to catch on and become popular in the US. Ain't gonna happen in my lifetime. Sure, all the little kids play it, but then they grow up and get into basketball, baseball, American football or whatever. It sure isn't soccer.

When David Beckham went to LA a few years ago, everyone at work asked who he was. They had never heard of him and didn't even that there was a team in LA. I didn't either, and I lived just two hours away.

But it works both ways. Ask any European about Joe Montana or Walter Payton and you'll get the same blank look that David Beckham drew.
