Life / With Fire and Sword - the Trilogy [7]

With Fire & Sword mini-series & book

Has anyone seen this mini-series, With Fire & Sword? Can I get the book in english? I got very confused over who was fighting who as it changed all the time. Can anyone suggest more books/movies that cover early Polish history? (the Cussock & the Poles & the Turks...) The notes at the end of the series stated that the fighting went on for over 150 years. I guess it's a disadvantage being American because we only have 250 years of history to remember!

Thanks,
KT

USA, Canada / Dual Citizenship: American and Polish? [53]

My Husband was from Poland (in the US for only 5 yrs) & I am American. Does our daughter have dual citizenship, even though she was born in the US? Can she obtain a Polish passport? If so how? I have my husband's birth certificate, a copy of his parents marriage licence, our marriage license, her birth certificate & his death cert.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
KT

Language / Why is the language so different in the South of poland? [5]

My late husband was a highlander (from Sptycowice, SW of Krakow) & now when I get letters from his family & have them translated sometimes my translator has a problem putting it into english. I will also try to translate a bit of the letters with my Polish/English dictionary & I can hardly find the words. My husband did tell me that I do speak what little Polish I know with a mountain accent. ;-)

Life / Calling Polish Cellphone [3]

Hi,
I just got an e-mail from my sister-in-law with her cell phone #. She is Polish but living in Ireland & I can't figure out if after the international codse of 011 (from the US) if I need to enter the country code for Ireland or Poland. Do you need the country code when dialing a cellphone. Her # starts out with 086205****.

Thanks!

Life / Doing laundry in Poland [66]

I always just set my temp at warm, and 20 min later the wash is done (45 min to dry as well). That's here in the US. I try not to use scented stuff as I have a young child & I don't know if she will have an allergic reaction to it. I agree with Shopgirl that clothes in AZ can dry really fast outside (my husband use to hang all his work clothes outside overnight to dry) but if the wind blows they get dusty. Good thing he worked for a sign company & it didn't matter what shape his clothes were in!

Language / Elementary Flash Cards [6]

Is there anywhere on line that I can get elementery flashcards for myself & my daughter? Ones that would have a picture on the front & the Polish word on the back. Kinda like a hard copy of the BYKI program.

Thanks,

Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

I made sure that my husband was going to speak Polish to our daughter, even before she was born. He spoke Polish to her up to the day he died. She was only 14 mos when he passed so I'm not sure how much she retained. When she started to get more vocal, at about 18 mos I think she spoke a mix. Now that she only hears English from me (I am learning some Polish) she has lost almost all of it. She does come out with some Polish words every once in a while. At the local Polish church they have a Saturday school, but it will be a few more years before she can go. She does have some Children's music CD's in Polish & she loves to listen to them all the time.

Her Godfather does speak to her in Polish as well as my husband's Aunts. The Aunts children understand Polish but hardly speak it. That's normal with any bilingual family, especially when the children hit school age.

Language / Any sweet Polish phrases [255]

My husband use to call our daughter his little Zabtia (little frog). It has stuck, I still call her that. He use to call her Pieschaka (sp) wich means a high, trill or squeal. He did that after she started to babble. She can be loud sometimes! He did say he had to stop calling her that & start calling her by her given name, Emma but I still call her that as well, just not as much as zabtia or Emma!

Language / Suggestions for Children learning Polish [25]

I found the radio station but not to struck on all the Techno. My husband was the techno fan, especially Scooter. Next time her Godfather is over I'll have him help me find some good DVD's for her.

RE:Michal-I am not Polish, my husband was but he was killed in Sept, when she was only 14 mos. Her father spoke to her in Polish all the time. I tried and am still trying to learn as much as I can so that when we go to visit his family in the summer we can communicate, somewhat!

Language / Suggestions for Children learning Polish [25]

I don't have TV access but I'm sure I can find an internet radio station. Are there any you would suggest that are more kid friendly? It was also suggested that I get some language CD's & play them at night so that it gets stuck in the subconscience.

Language / Suggestions for Children learning Polish [25]

I've asked my father in law to send her children's music. At the Polish church here they have a Saturday school where they teach the children the language, customs, songs & dances, but that wouldn't start for her untill she is at least 4. Her Godfather will visit sometimes & talk to her in Polish but it's not enough. I just don't want her to lose that part of her heritage!

Language / Suggestions for Children learning Polish [25]

Is there any suggestions on what I can get for my daughter to listen to so she can learn/understand Polish? My husband was from Poland but he passed away when our daughter was 14 mos. I know that he visits her in her dreams & speaks to her in Polish but what can I do to help? I only know very little Polish & we are traveling there this summer to visit his family.

Thanks!
