History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

That question could have been asked directly after WW2...

Yup, makes sense. And besides: Germany couldn't handle another addition to its territory anyway, as they are still struggling to "incorporate" the former GDR. Not to mention the negative reaction of Germany's "friends" in the west and the Russians. I would love to see Britain and France complain like Thatcher did in 1989, though.

Not much...

Sounds like the Ukraine has to wait for a very long time before they are even considered candidates for the EU.

What you're proposing is to exchange...

I know that it's only theoretical, but it's an interesting question. Well, maybe we don't even have to think about it after (or if) the Ukraine joins the EU.

Poland is depending on a region 10-20 years behind the Western Europe, Ukraine is 30-50 years behind Poland and not really developing

Whow, is it really THAT bad? What have they done the past 20 years?

But if Germans were ready to pay for what we've done with the place and we got Lwów and the money i'd be happy to bill them myself.

Seriously, what would you say: how attached is Poland to the territories in the west?

Have you seen what Ukrainians did to that region?

I've never been to the Ukraine, so I can't tell.

And Germany pays us the equivalent of their decade worth of GDP for rebuilding the regions

Well, no. You get the provinces back that were "rebuilt" by the Soviets. Sounds fair... :)

I don't think it is the best solution for Poland.

Some may dream about having both the old eastern and the new western provinces?

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

I would not like to give Germans three cities to get only one.

What about we simply undo the outcome of WW2? Poland and Germany both get their lost eastern territories back and everybody is happy. Or not...? ;)

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

do you claim that to be historically German?

I guess what BB meant is that Polish and German history is largely interconnected. He thought that you were denying this fact; thus the example of Kopernikus.

Yes it is true that Poland annexed some eastern parts of germany. But in historical terms these lands belonged to the poles for centuries.

This sounds like the old Polish communist propaganda crap to justify the annexation of the German provinces in the east. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovered_Territories for details. Better call it a compensation (or a "gift" by Stalin) for the lost Polish territory in the east.

News / The Lisbon Treaty and land reperations [74]

In the 30s very few people didnt care about politics

I would agree with you if you would have added "in the cities".

And then they used Polish slave labourers

I was told by both ethnic Poles and Germans that you had the choice: sign up for the Volksliste or leave your farm within an hour's notice. The farms were then given to landless ethnic Germans and (later in war) to Lithuanians. To the best of my knowledge there was no slave labour in the area I was talking about, but if you can point me to a source that proves otherwise, I would appreciate that.

calling them traitor is rubbish

Well, you called them traitors yourself in posting #97, didn't you? That's why I used the word in my question.

German minority was never Polish, these guys were enemies of Poland

You are generalising. What about all those ethnic Germans who didn't care about politics? I know for a fact (from eye-witness reports of farmers from the Poznan area) that many of those people lived together peacefully with their Polish neighbours. Are they still traitors in your eyes simply because they were ethnic Germans?

News / The Lisbon Treaty and land reperations [74]

Sometimes I have the feeling that the Polish and Czech governments are a little bit to eager to prevent Germans and others from reclaiming property lost after WW2. Is it because they fear (but do not admit) that those claims are legitimate?

also that his ancestors were of German ethnic origin

Where did he say this? His name suggests otherwise.

and yes I am against giving back property

I agree - but for all nationalities. Touching the status quo after so many years doesn't make sense.

News / Are Poles happy about the impending Federal states of Europe? [20]

It is my belief that a eurosceptic political party would make huge dividends in Poland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia

As I said before: if a majority of their people opposes a membership in the EU these countries can leave anytime. At least in theory, that is. Practically - well, we have to wait and see...

Life / WHAT DO YOUNG POLES SEE IN RAP CRAP? [63]

She got a copy of it and I got an email back from her saying she kinda liked it

That's cool. I met her last year after a free concert she gave in Portland, Oregon. Very nice lady.

Life / Wonderful Poland.......but the attitude of Polish people [150]

I think Poles are this way because of hitler and everything

But "Hitler and everything" was 65 years ago. Don't you think it's a little bit too easy to blame the occasional (?) racist behaviour in Poland on that?

History / Slavs vs Germanics: Battle of the centuries [44]

Every country has its pros and cons. That's why it is so interesting to see and experience as many as you can. At least that's what I try.

History / Slavs vs Germanics: Battle of the centuries [44]

Wrong.I was there 6 months.

In a salt mine? ;)

This is normal.

Nope. Because German girls are amongst the most easy going when they are on vacation.

I drank beer.Berlin Lager is not bad.

That's not beer, that's coloured water. Go further south and have some real stuff with over 10% alcohol...

I ate german food.If it was real,I don't know.

Kebab or Gyros are not German food... :)

Yes,Rammstein and Scorpions?I prefer polish rap.

What about Can, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk - just to name a few? (C)Rap I don't know - don't like it.

You mean polish food is contaminated?

Commies tended to ruin their environment, and Poland is way too close to Chernobyl.

History / Slavs vs Germanics: Battle of the centuries [44]

southern

Let's see some main issues:
1. You've never been to Germany
2. You've never had a German woman
3. You never drank German beer, wine or Schnaps
4. You never ate real German food
5. You have no idea what Germans are all about
6. I give you that ... ;)
7. You've never been beaten up by a German
8. You never heard of German electronic music, rock bands and Techno
9. You never ate uncontaminated food

Did you ever leave your country?

Genealogy / Dominowski Mystery [10]

Does anyone have any maps of the region (including small towns) that can help me figure things out?

Try this, and for your research don't forget that you are looking for ancestors in Prussia/ the German Empire and not in Poland.

mapy.eksploracja.pl/viewpage.php?page_id=26

Scroll down the page for cities, towns and villages. If the link doesn't work (happens occasionally), use

mapy.eksploracja.pl

instead.

Life / Poles that have lived or live abroad are they different? [68]

are you suggesting that you become similar to that culture given time

No, you are not becoming similar (except of course, you live abroad for a very long time) but you are getting much more open to other ideas. You accept and understand that there are people out there who do not "tick" the same way you do. Actually you are forced to be more open minded, because YOU are the one who is the stranger in the country. Difficult to explain, but I hope you get my drift.
