History / Drang nach Osten. [79]

The plastic pole thing. In all my life I have never heard of such a term till here on PF. It is unknown in Poland. Have Poles on emigration devised a derogatory term for themselves?

News / Words of thanks towards the 'Federation of Expellees' by Angela Merkel [40]

He is not obsessed.

He is making a mistake by equating the East German government with the German people. Same sort of nonsense we often fight against when people stick it to us Poles - Poland did this and this in 1950. It is grossly unfair to throw things at people who were truly enslaved and were persecuted for opposing the communist regime.

History / Battle of Grunwald 2009 [24]

Sorry for not posting photos from the battle as I said I would. I didn't go this year(my German car failed, ok, it was just the battery), but my friends who went said the best battles were after the official battle. They had bruises to prove it.

I'll post some pics from last year's battle tomorrow. The outcome was the same.

Na topory, pawie czuby!

News / What needs to happen in the world so that Poland and Russia form alliance? [297]

And I think you shouldn't have put it as "they" as if bolsheviks were/are the most accurate reflection of Russian society.

You're right. When I travelled through Russia, I made friends easily and there was no animosity toward Poles at all, but some friends I made told me that their press sure tried to flame it up.

News / What needs to happen in the world so that Poland and Russia form alliance? [297]

At the moment, I think Russia would like for Poland to admit they started WWII and aknowledge our insane resistance to Russia's great efforts to bring peace and prosperity to all the workers in the world.

I don't think they can ever forgive us for stopping them in 1920 from flodding Europe. The rest of Europe is also indignant that we stopped the bolsheviks. It could have been such a worker's paradise. Pesky Poles.

Sacking Moscow in the 17th century was also naughty. No one has done it since, and they have tried.

The ball is in the Russians' court.

History / RUSSIAN TV ACCUSES POLAND OF BEING HITLER ALLY [30]

I just wonder if Tusk will have enough balls to confront Putins lies on Sept 1 in Westerplatte? I say no, but let's wait.

If he does, there will be an outcry from EU lefties(majority) how Poland is so difficult in dealings with the Soviets, I mean Russia.

News / Words of thanks towards the 'Federation of Expellees' by Angela Merkel [40]

My personal observation on this issue.

While we could get emotional and say, what was little Hans guilty of to get expelled? Let's comemorate his plight. Well, we are also comemorating his uncle Fritz's plight, who may have not been so inocent.

Operation Tannenberg (German: Unternehmen Tannenberg) was the codename for one of the extermination actions directed at the Polish people during World War II, part of the Generalplan Ost. Conscription lists (Sonderfahndungsbuch Polen), prepared by Germans already before the war, identified more than 61,000 members of Polish elites: activists, intelligentsia, scholars, actors, former officers, and others, who were to be interned or shot. Members of the German minority living in Poland assisted in preparing the lists.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Tannenberg

In the interwar period German minority organizations in Poland such as Jungdeutsche Partei, Deutsche Vereinigung, Deutscher Volksbund and Deutscher Volksverband actively cooperated with Nazi Germany through espionage, sabotage, provocations and political indoctrination. They maintained close contact and were directed by NSDAP, Auslandsorganisation, Gestapo, SD and Abwehr. It is estimated that 25% of the German minority in Poland were members of these organisations.[4]

By October 1938, SD agents were organizing Selbstschutz in Poland. Ethnic Germans with Polish citizenship were trained in the Third Reich in various sabotage methods and guerilla tactics.

Polish historians estimated that the majority of approximately 50,000 Poles killed in the early days of the German occupation were victims of Selbstschutz.[6][4]

The total number of Selbstschutz members in Poland is estimated at 82,000.

The existence of a large paramilitary organization of ethnic Germans with Polish citizenship that helped in the German war against Poland and engaged in widespread massacres of Poles served as one of the reasons for the expulsion of Germans after the war.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selbstschutz

It is worth mentioning that Katyń was a similar action on the Soviet side thanks to the NKVD-Gestapo cooperation.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestapo-NKVD_Conferences

So, the plight of German expellees is an issue to some Germans, but we can see how the Polish side has a bit if a kneejerk reaction. Erika Steinbach, the leader of this movement, was born in occupied Poland to a German soldier. Is she an expelee?

One last thing. The process of expeling the Germans from Poland after the war was conducted by Soviet controled People's Poland. who also proceeded to round up Polish Home Army soldiers and often executing them. Their crimes are unpunishable to this day, but that's another story.

When are we going to see spellcheck on PF? :)

You mean sick?

No, I meant thick, as in dense.

Yes, but did not Stalin win the war? If he had wanted, you would not have a homeland either

So you think that People's Poland was what we Poles fought for? Are you an internationalist and have difficulty understanding what a homeland is?

They decided, nobody else, even if some beaten countries wanted this (for understandable reason for sure).

You're going to have to put that in English, I'm afraid.

You're easily impressed, Torq.

I'm not. On a parallel thread he thinks that Stalin could have enslaved Poland but didn't.

First of all, the pact should be called for what it was - the Stalin-Hitler Pact. Today's Russian propaganda doesn't differ much from Soviet propaganda. Not much here to discuss.

Putin once said that there are no ex-KGB officers. I believe him.

I don't care about the Ukranians. Out of the tens of thousands of SS and camp guards only 7,000 were Ukranians were committing anti-semitic activity? Lame stats.

I'm not surprised with the 7,500 Poles. Very low.

Come on, Ukis were no friends of Jews. Plenty of them in the Waffen SS.

Now, 7,500 Poles guilty of "anti-semitic activity." Not significant over 6 years of war, is it?

I wonder if killing a Jewish collaborator was an anti-semitic activity? You can get called an anti-semite for not opening a door for a Jew.

All in all the numbers are small for a nation of 30,000,000. These numbers, along with the fact that there was no official collaboration, unlike in other European countries, makes Poland a non-collaborationist nation. But, you already knew that.

the number of Poles who signed the Volksliste IV, people you yourself described as "considered traitors and collaborators" and there were 83,000 of them

I'll call you on that statistic. Whereb did you get that?

Also, I do have some numbers for Jewish collaborators of which the number of Gestapo agents is large. It was difficult to eliminate them, but by far they were the greatest threat to fellow Jews. I'll look for it another time.

I wouldn't agree about Rumkowski in £ódż though. He was despised and his infamous 'Give up your children speach' will not be made into any Hollywood movies.

However we're certain to disagree on the numbers of Poles who fought for and against.

I would like to see your numbers and the conclusion you draw from those numbers beyond simplistic 'some things are good ; some things are bad in life'. So far, I recognize yours as a Forrest Gump position.

I have always said that some Poles actively opposed the Nazis and some Poles actively supported them.

What a wishy washy position. Not exactly false yet not truthful either.

You're just embarassing yourself with statements such as "the death camps were in Poland because that is where most of the resistence was".

Why is that ridiculous?

The camp was initially used for interning Polish intellectuals and resistance movement members

love how you can in one breath complain about the lack of media attention to a certain subject and in the next quote a media article about that very subject!

I know for a fact that such articles are very rare. But, without looking, I will bet I can find an article on the Jewish Holocaust in today's press. And tomorrow...

Maybe the media reflects what people want to read?

Right. You get that empty feeling when you don't get a holocaust story every morning.

Maybe the media have grasped what you can not: it is impossible to be a communist and a Jew.

Jews seem to of different opinion: ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3342999,00.html

It is the preoccupation with Jews as the only group of people worth discussing during WWII. Maybe they do own the media? I have noticed there is very little in the media about communist crimes.
