Food / Nudle. Who likes Noodles in Poland? :) [33]

I personally prefer the Vi-Fon bad boys. I find the Knorr Nudles to be pretty bland to be honest. I did find an awesome one in a 24 hour shop one night that had like a wee tin with what looked to be dog food in it. But it was like a meat and veg thing to add to your noodles as well as the oil and soup base as normal. Was phenomenal.

And Seanus I can totally sympathise. Being brought up in South East Asia, their instant noodles are the daddy!

I can't remember the name of the stuff. It was an Indonesian company that did instant noodles in a bowl with holes in it to drain the water then you mixed in the powder, chilli and oil and you got a nice mi goereng...fookin ideal!

I have your clothes all laundered. Just need to find a time to drop them off. Some taxi driver stole my phone and is holding it at 70pln ransom so I will have it back tomorrow (short 70pln) and will give you a text. If I don't manage then I will drop them in Nic Nowego in a nice bag for you to pick up next time you are in for a pint.

Christ on a bike though...I have lost a load of weight since coming here...didn't even notice until I saw that picture!

Life / Home In 20 Days - My thoughts on Poland... [36]

I am yet to have a good pizza here. But I was spoiled in Inveraray working and living with a pizza chef in an Italian restaurant. Freshly made dough, fresh imported ingredients and a guy that's been making pizzas in Italy for 5 years and doesn't speak english. Pizza's just aren't gonna be the same.

Life / Polish Police - my bad experience. [33]

I have not had much experience with the Police. However we had them in the bar every now and again after minor incidents with homeless people and drunk tourists. Found them to be quite heavy handed when dealing with people in the most part. However that is very much the, "if you don't want a baton across your napper, don't be a tit" in my opinion. When I needed help however (a taxi driver tried to overcharge me and then grabbed my phone out of my hand as payment as a friend pulled me out the car) I went to the police office with the liscence plate number of the car only to be told that without his name and the company they can't help. Luckily my friends phoned my phone enough and I payed the 70pln ransom to get my phone back. Police were of no help whatsoever.

I would disagree. Sitting on the tram, wandering round the rynek, sitting in pubs I have noticed loads of it, from both points of view. From it being sickening when my gf and i broke up seeing people all over each other everywhere. To meeting someone else and being almost embarrassed in the pub because she was expecting me to be almost all over her...which no-one else thought was odd.

Not particularly prudish either. I never had a one night stand while I was in Poland...but i had one girl home after dating for about a week and a half. Not prudish but not exactly slutty.

I disagree, Seanus. But then this could go round and round for hours. I think it just depends on your own experience. I found even just walking about the streets in the afternoon seeing people cuddling and kissing to quite a cringeable degree. I would say more conservative in attirude towards sex and things, but not afraid to show who they are with.

I just saw on the news there that there has been a mass walkout at Grangemouth as well. I can completely sympathyse with the local workers when people are being imported from other countries to take their jobs. I have no problem with people travelling to other countries to work. I do it often, I love seeing different cultures, learning new languages and, in some cases, making more money. However specifically importing labour in order to cut wages is horrible. The owners of these companies really need to take a look at themselves and look at the big picture instead of looking to cut wages in the short term.

I would imagine they are the same as any other expat. They are entitled to vote in their own country by proxy or by post. If they take on citizenship in their new home then they will be entitled to vote in that country.

I think that's how it works anyway.

If you want to be a pilot you won't see her all the time either. Especially if you want to make any real money you will be away for days at a time often.

Go for the piloting mate. Follow your own wishes, if she loves you as you love her then she'll still be here when you get back.

That might not sweep her off her feet, but it means you can at least say hello...and that's always an important first step.

In the first post they are, but if you read down a bit there is a half decent phonetic (and spelling) list of those things.

There are not many phonetic guides out there without buying yourself a phrasebook or something. I could pass on a load of sites with sentences and phrases that will come in handy...but if you can't pronounce polish words and letters then they just look like jibberish.

Well I am rubbish at approaching women...never been a strong point at all! But starting off saying hello to someone in their own language (which you don't speak) makes it obvious that you are interested...you wouldn't go to the effort of learning otherwise. But yeah, roses is a good idea...i just wish i had the confidence to do something like that!

The kebabs in Berlin will be made for the German market. Just like the Kebabs in the UK are made for a UK market and kebabs in Krakow are made for a Polish market. If you want authentic kebabs then go to Turkey. Just because they are made by Turks does not mean it's authentic, I know many a turkish kebab shop owner in Glasgow, but the kebabs are still nothing like kebabs in Turkey.

So you are unlikely to find Berlin style kebabs in Krakow. Learn to love the Krakow Kebab.

That's a great rate. Is that the rate in Kantors or is that the rate on the net? Keep in mind there will always be differences there. I would personally cash in now, I can't see the UK economy (and, as such, the pound) going much higher.

There are about a million kebab shops in Krakow.

But the point is true for most food. Look at Chicken Vindaloo, the incarnation in the UK doesn't exist in India. But drunken louts love it because it's the only thing their drunken palates can taste so you can get it in any Indian in the UK.

And chinese food and the ubiquitous greeny yellow curry sauce that you get in the UK. Never in my travels round south east asia have i seen anything like that...ever.

It's a big contributing factor to people having dodgy stomachs when they travel to the far east. There is minimal dangerous bacteria in the food as it is cooked at such a high temperature, but your stomach and palate immediately see it as foreign and react as such.

not to be mixed up with Tartar Sauce used with steak etc

Also not to be mixed up with steak tartare. Yes both have capers and gherkins...but tartar sauce is a lighter version turned into an almost mayonaise consistency to go with fish. Not steak.

I remember we used to say it all the time in my work when we felt like beating the crap out of someone (not that we would, but it got the message across to the Polish waiting staff without letting the Italians we were talking about know).

Love / Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Especially In Another Language! [46]

Right, quite personal, but I am struggling with the grammar to say what I need. Basically I started seeing a girl while in Krakow. She said she wanted to come here and see me and maybe work here for a while. I said that was fine because all was going well over there. But recently she has started pushing me to get tickets organised and moaning that I am going to the pub too often (as you will know Seanus, in small town Scotland, going to the pub is a perfectly acceptable part of the day to catch up with the town gossip, it's a social centre). Plus her conversation has become all about what I am not doing, instead of about things we want to do and nice things. It feels like she is trying to change me and I don't want this carrying on, because I know what it's like to come to a new country with no other friends and to lose that one person you are there for. It's a nightmare. So I feel it's time to bring things to as amicable an end as possible, and I am looking to try and sum this all up in Polish as her English is not very good.

Just the spark really seems to have died and I don't want her banking all of her plans on coming here only to be dissapointed like I was because my ex was too much of a coward to tell me that it was over before it was too late.
