Life / XBOX LIVE in Poland? [13]

I believe you get the first month for free.
Then it's about 8$/a month depending on your subscription (silver, gold etc..)
But I'm not 100% sure. I've got PS3 :)

Life / XBOX LIVE in Poland? [13]

Should work. I've got a friend in Katowice who plays on a regular basis.
Gears of War is awsome. Number II's coming this fall.

Life / Teens in Poland, their typical life, schooling, influences, etc. [32]

After the downfall of communism several western-styled subcultures spawned in Poland. Hiphop/Street and Punk-movements are quite big in the larger cities. And although the trendy, well-educated teens move slowly away from the "traditional values", later years have showed quite an upswing in religious commitment and historical interest amoung youths.

Life / Popular Polish classic Songs [18]

"Deszcz, Jesienny Deszcz" is one of my favorites.
Always makes me cry (bigtime)
I believe Czerwone Gitary recorded a version of it, try youtube.
Lyrics & chords right here: spiewnik.wywrota.pl/33805_czerwone_gitary_deszcz_jesienny_deszcz.html

It goes something like:

Rain, the autumn rain
it plays sad melodies
Rifles wettened untherneath it
and the helmets are covered in rust

Carry down the valley of dew
in a world of tears
untherneath your soggy backpack
but eighteen years of age.

Rain, The autumn rain
drums the steel on your helmet
There you go, young soldier
down the unknown valley

Somewhere, far from here
day turns in to night
The dark, fair head of your beloved
cuddles down to sleep

It may be that she stares
in to the nightly fog
begging god with words of prayer
that you'll come baack unharmed

May it be that god
gives a safe return
and you can cuddle her
dark, fair, head to sleep instead

:')

Life / Goth scene in Poland [30]

A bunch of people in Romero-styled make-up dressed up as zombies, marching around, moaning. It was quite a sight. I believe there's a clip of it on youtube :)

Some of the costumes were really ellaborate, with sawed-of limbs and chunks of flesh hanging loose.

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

These are Germanic languages though - from the Same family as English. I speak a couple of languages, and can honestly say that Swedish was the easiest language for me (native English speaker) to master very quickly.

Yes, I know. My mom had some trouble learning Swedish when she first came here during Stan Wojenny. I on the other hand, grew up bi-lungual so I've never gave it much thought. But I can imagine learning a germanic language is difficult for a slav. It goes the other way around as well, although I have a Swedish friend who can recite W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie and other Brzechwa-poems like a lean-mean-Polish-speaking-machine ;)

Concidering the amount of American culture (movies, music etc..) in Poland (and all of Europe) available I'm surprised everyone don't speak "Poglish" at all times.

From Wikipedia:
The most common phenomenon is the Polonization of English words. Instead of saying (in English), "A cop gave me a ticket on the highway," or (in standard Polish), "Policjant dał mi mandat na autostradzie," a Polonian might say (in Poglish), "Kapy dały mi tikieta na hajłeju."

I work for Eniro (the yellow pages) in Sweden. I've heard the Polish equivalent is called "Panorama Firm", but I'm not sure. Google it! :)

Life / How popular is the band Vader in Poland? [4]

I'm guessing quite popular, since they are Polands biggest musical export.
They've got a huge fanbase. Black Metal over all is a big genre in Poland. Which is understandable, concidering the strong influence of the Catholic Church. The kids got's to have something to rebel against ;)

Life / Goth scene in Poland [30]

In Warszawa there's a pretty big gothic underground scene. NO MERCY is a great club if you like alternative music. Last summer they arranged a huge zombie walk with over a 100 participants around Plac Defilad. I've seen a couple of gothster-kids hanging around Stare Miasto as well ;)

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

Swedes in general are good english speakers. So are the danes and dutch. Poles on the other hand are still a bit off. German is more widespread as a second language in Poland.
