Language / Not sure if I will be able to speak Polish [53]

I am new to Polish--only 2 months in and I am a native speaker of English.

Just curious, why are the kids going to polish school? I assume it's the father's idea...
My friend's children go to the polish school in Schaumburg and they 'hate' it, as they declare it openly. :) The younger one has a really hard time learning polish grammar and pronunciation even though both parent talk to him mostly in polish.

H's got no problem with English.

Feedback / National Admin appreciation day! [18]

"Latest Discussion" link is what counts to me. We had this "checker" in the past, which nobody seem to like and use, including me. I'm glad to see it gone. OOPS, actually it's not gone, still there.. :) but I'm not using it.

Food / Polish Fruit Juice used to mix with beer [6]

I've never seen beer mixed with fruit juice in any country, including Poland

Then you never had a warm, heated beer or wine with sok (juice) or syrup, plus some "secret" spices. A glass or two will warm you up and put you to sleep in no time!

Who said that you can drink beer ice cold only and why?

Food / Which brand of sauerkraut do you prefer? [10]

I buy polish sauerkraut in a jar, Krakus or any other brand. I can eat it straight! No rinsing here. All vitamins! I like the one from a barrel in a polish deli as well, but sometimes I feel that because it is open and people serve themselves it may be contaminated, so i don't buy it too often.

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

The American public refused to buy dog food containing horse meat and won the battle, so it not served to dogs either.

I'm glad to hear it!

Food / Horsemeat, anyone? [62]

I hear that horse meat ends up in the cans for dogs and cats...but I don't know.
This is one of many other types of meat I'm not willing to try.

Life / Swine flu vaccinations taking place in Poland? [52]

sledz
Do you get the chills too? I remember having a fever and the chills as a kid. A memorable experience, not even the thick, heavy, goose feather 'pierzyna' could warm me up...

(I think I have a couple of blankets in my closet, just in case...) :)

Life / Swine flu vaccinations taking place in Poland? [52]

Nothing that I read here convinces me that having a flu shot is the right choice. The shot neither prevents the flu nor makes it milder. I'm only against flu shots.

I'm grateful for having all the shots I got a s kid, i.e.measles, rubella, chicken pox etc., all the typical, mandatory shots we got in Poland. I would not object to get a shot for malaria, if I were to travel somewhere where I may most likely come across it.

But a flu? It happens every year for as long as I live, it is as common as a common cold.
Nourish you body, don't put junk in it, your immune system will thank you. Our great 'architect' knew how to make our bodies, he even included the body guards. Take care of them and they will take care of you when the need arises.

People get sick and survive or die from other complications, not necessarily the flu.
This swine flu is just the same like the others. No flu shots for me.

History / Polish symbolisms [12]

You can be strong like a lion (mocny jak lew)
You can be faithful like a dog (wierny jak pies)
You can be stupid like a donkey (glupi jak osiol) hey, no offense. We have a very smart donkey on PF!
You can be sly like a fox (przebiegly jak lis)
You can be smart like an owl (madry jak sowa) ..well, I don't really know why the saying, are owls smart?

That's all I can think of now.
Anybody also has more comparisons or symbols?

Life / Swine flu vaccinations taking place in Poland? [52]

I can't believe that people are so gullible and so eager to put this poison in their bodies. I think pharmaceutical companies just need some cash and are "in" with the media to keep people scared. (Seanus, where are you? It is a perfect conspiracy theory, innit?)

I don't know anybody (yet) who had the swine flu...
I'd rather rely on my T-cells to defend my body against this or any other invader. I keep them strong with whole foods and so far the 'little soldiers" did not disappoint me. I'm with the same company for over 16 years and I'm yet to call in sick. So there.

I'll take my chances.

USA, Canada / US real estate crisis, how does it affect Polish-Americans [26]

Either Small or big banks which were relying mostly on landing to stay in business are indeed in trouble and are being taken over by the feds or received TARP bailout money to be allowed to keep their doors open. It happened in the 80's already, when most saving and loans banks collapsed. Banks which were always strict are fine and profiting as some scared consumers and businesses are flocking in, escaping from other, unfortunate banks.

I don't know of many polish people loosing homes. A lot of them bought homes with a decent pay down, good 'ol conventional, 30 year fixed mortgage. My condo dipped about 15-20%, but I have it for a while already and got a manageable amount of mortgage left. I'm fine. All my home owner friends are fine. Unfortunately, people with zero down payment or buying a bigger house they could afford are suffering. If they still have a job and even though their mortgage is higher than the house is worth, some choose to stay. However, if you lose a job with this type of debt, it's better to walk away and many do.

It seems like a lot of people wait for some kind on encouragement to go out and spend more. There are plenty of bargains out there, but the fear of loosing a job and not being able to pay keeps people away from the stores and the housing market.

Hey, now the world knows. You gotta keep the American people somewhat secure in their jobs, we love to go out and shop..and shop..and shop more.. everybody would benefit if we started to buy again. No? :)

Love / Why are Polish girls constantly ill? [166]

The problem with men is that they like to play the macho attitude. They think they are invincible and often ignore some obvious symptoms, hoping for them to go away... until too late. We lost a neighbor (late 50's) a couple of months ago because he would refuse to go to the doctor. He confided his health issues another neighbor who was telling him to go to the doctor, but he said not to worry it will pass, it didn't - he did.

Women tend to run to the doctor with every little issue.

Some people worry that if they take off from work for doctor's visits too often the management will think that they are sick and may let them go...it is officially against the law, but known to happen.

wyspać się - get enough of sleep

Love / Why are Polish girls constantly ill? [166]

When i first came to Poland i was told by a Polish girl , never to ask a Polish person how they are....unless you have all day free to listen to all the ailments they are suffering from....!

lol. That's a pretty good advise. When i talk to my family in Poland, sooner or later the subject changes to who is sick, who was or who is not feeling well and is going to get sick.

I don't know why so many people are so quick to declare that they are sick, have aches and pains and almost with pride - list the medications they take.

The other extreme: people in The USA are always 'fine", even when gravely sick.
They also love to take a lot of pills, prescribed or over the counter or supplements... The difference - they don't openly talk about it.

I understand that there are illnesses which require medication and thanks to the pharmaceutical research, many diseases from the past are controlled.
I'm sooo against unnecessary pill popping. People don't realize how much damage they cause in the body.
I never had any flu vaccinations and will not have the oinky one either.

Food / Anyone familiar with Placek bread with raisins? [7]

My aunt in Poland made the most wonderful placek drozdzowy. I was visiting her at least twice a month to stuff myself with it! And, a glass of cold milk to boot.

Language / Nice way to say the name? [22]

I'd never say that Madzia is a form of Magda/Magdalena.

Magda:
ZDROBNIENIA (diminutives): Macha, Mada, Madzia, Magda, Magdalenka, Magdusia, Magduszka, Magdzia, Lena.

Happy now? Dariusz, Darjuszek, Dareczek, Daruś, Darusisko... lol.

You guys are funny!

Thank you...

Carry on... :)

Edward, I can assure you. You ask a question on PF, you get answers and arguments!
And that's the beauty of PF.

Chill out, perhaps not... Magdzia would have been a much better choice.
Nonetheless, it is used by Poles and who are you to argue that? Huh? :)

USA, Canada / Budka Suflera Toronto in November [6]

I like some of Budka Suflera'sr songs and I find Cugowski's raspy voice pretty good. Like Bian Adam's or Rod Stuart's.

Food / Is there any other Polish seafood exept herring and carp? [30]

A person from North America will see carp as seafood whereas a Brit likely won't.

I've never seen carp in American supermarket and most likely never will. Americans don't eat it and I don't either. It is consider a dirty fish feeding on any crap it finds in the mud at the bottom of the river. Most polish families in The USA use another type of fish for X-Mas Eve fiesta. However, still a lot do in the name of tradition and perhaps will for generation to come.
