It's just that white people, and I am no exception, really have no idea of the inconsistencies in our society. We're so privaledged that we can't see beyond our own noses. This is natural but it doesn't make it right. Two years ago, white people in America were polled and 75% believed that blacks had an equal chance to succeed in America. That might not seem outrageous until you consider that 40 years earlier in 1965, the same poll was given and the same results were found, that 75% felt that Blacks had a fair shake. In 1965! I mean, if we were so wrong then, what's keeping us from being just as wrong now?

While I could never condone the criminalization of the burning of the flag, I'm not sure I could condone the actual activity either. Freedom of Speech allows us to express our opinions and burning the flag certainly does that, but Freedom of Speech also allows us to use our words to express ourselves, to use nuance and irony and layered argument, it allows us the freedom to strive to make our voices heard more intelligently than simply setting fire to an object that means different things to many.

Not only is that a simplistic example it's also a bunch of hogwash. This sporting insult to Black intelligence is not new. Since sports have become globalized and integrated the line has always been "White Athletes are smarter, Black Athletes have 'natural, inherit, God-given athletic ability.'" It's fooey. It's a white rationalization on why they're getting beat at the sports they invented.

You're not a racist, Tornado, I don't use that word lightly and I wouldn't lob it your way, but that is some flawed thinking, however it is shared by many. I can't speak much for European Football but some of the greatest Black baseball players were maligned in their heyday as being "naturally talented, but not 'baseball smart.'" You can't be as great as Hank Aaron and Willie Mays were without inherent "baseball intelligence." This is the same line of thinking that keeps blacks from being quarterbacks in American football.

I'm extrapolating here because I'm not in expert in world football but perhaps the way the African teams played seemed different because they learned the same game a different way. What I mean is that, an African fan might watch a European team and note what he thinks to be poor form because he was taught football in the African mold.

When the Canadians invented hockey in the late 1800s, it went through many rule changes and incarnations that were designed to make the game better, but the Canadians naturally held on to some of the bad habits the new rules were designed to remove. When the Soviets picked up hockey in the 1950's they didn't start with those bad habits so their game became superior quickly. Is this to say that the Canadians had poor "hockey smarts" or that the Russians were "hockey geniuses?" Of course not, it was just a different way. I'd be careful before labeling such subjective things as unintelligent.

That article would offend me regardless of how I'm voting. The purpose of his statements, to my ears anyhow, was to reflect that the world is not black and white, as Ms. Grabar presents it. That sometimes people we like say things we don't agree with, that to him, friendship and loyalty have precendence over political gain. As I said before, I don't care who anyone votes for, but to assert that white immigrants "have it worse" than "lucky Black Americans" is ludicrous. If you want to disown Obama for the thoughts of his preacher, I can't tell you not to, but I can alert you to some quotes from people John McCain has called his spiritual leaders:

– Reverend John Hagee has called the Catholic Church the "Great *****." He has said that the Anti-Christ will rise out of the European Union (of course, the Anti-Christ will also be Jewish). He has said all Muslims are trained to kill and will be part of the devil’s army when Armageddon comes (which he hopes is soon). John McCain continues to say he is proud of Reverend Hagee’s endorsement.

– Reverend Rod Parsley believes America was founded to destroy Islam. Since this is such an outlandish claim, I have to add for the record, that he is not kidding. Reverend Parsley says Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" brought down from a "demon spirit." Of course, we are in a war against all Muslims, including presumably Muslim-Americans. Buts since Parsley believes this is a Christian nation and that it should be run as a theocracy, he is not very concerned what Muslim-Americans think. John McCain says Reverend Rod Parsley is his "spiritual guide."

– Jerry Falwell said America had 9/11 coming because we tolerated gays, feminists and liberals. It was our fault. Our chickens had come home to roost, if you will. John McCain proudly received his support and even spoke at his university’s commencement.

I'm not telling anyone to not vote for John McCain, either. These people aren't on McCain's payroll, they don't speak for McCain, neither did Obama's preacher so I don't hold any of these qoutes (including the outlandish one's by Obama's preacher) against the candidates. My point is, before you start thinking about how lucky Black men are, especially in politics, ask yourself why Obama's preacher was all over the news and none of these qoutes have seen the light of day.

That's what makes it worth doing. As opposed to flag burning which is easy, pointless, and crude. Again, I'm all for freedom of expression and there are times when I can see flag burning as a necessary sign of defiance but it's not a instigator of real change, just a display.

This is one of the more hilarious sentences I've ever read. Hilarious, sad, terrifying, all of those. First, the phrase "Original Americans" used to describe Europeans is pretty funny, ESPECIALLY when used to contrast Indian people. My "own people" have done enough disrepectful things to others, a little back from withen isn't going to hurt anybody. I can't tell you how embarassed I am as an American by this. I take great pride in knowing where things are on a map and to see a fellow country woman crap all over that is disheartening ("I thought Europe was a country.")
