Travel / Touring Poland by Car & stay B&B: Pre-book or "wing-it"? [9]

Fail to plan, plan to fail.

Then again I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to organising holidays.

You can combine both approaches. Do some research first and draw up a shortlist of places you would like to stay then you will still feel like you have a certain amount of freedom.

I think it's vital to do some planning. You might choose to stay at one location over another and miss out on something wonderful that might only have been a 10 min drive from where you're staying.

Life / "K*rwa"-why do young Poles find this word so cool ? [67]

It took a second attempt for me to get it right. First time I posted it I spelt the full word correctly and added an asterisk in the middle of it.............I had to go back to edit my post :)

UK, Ireland / Polish Satellite TV in the UK - downgrade charge? [3]

She wouldn't be breaking the contract as she's been subscribed to them for three years !!

I can only compare them to Sky in the UK and to my knowledge you do not get "fined" for downgrading your TV package.

UK, Ireland / Polish Satellite TV in the UK - downgrade charge? [3]

My mother subscribes to Cyfrowy Polsat here in the UK via the help of a friend in Poland.

She has decided she would like to reduce the number of channels and move down to a lower priced package. However, her friend told her there is a 175 PLN charge to downgrade which I find unbelievable.

Does anyone have a link to Polsat's webpage where they give information on this subject ?

Thanks in advance

Real Estate / Article: Poland becomes real estate leader [16]

The official word is the reverse of the "word on the street".

There are concerns that Ukraine may not be upto speed although some may argue that Poland are not progressing that well either.

In a surprising announcement, Tusk proclaimed that if Ukraine have problems meeting their obligations then Poland would happily host the whole tournament.

Travel / Cheap airlines are not THAT cheap anymore ! [30]

Two months on from my original post and flight prices to Poland are going through the roof !!!

Return flights to a Katowice OR Gdansk are averaging around £ 200 per return. A friend has just had to pay £ 225 for a return ticket from Gdansk to Liverpool.

Another friend of mine wanted to fly with Wizz to see her family at Christmas but flying out well before Xmas and AFTER New Years Day and prices were £ 480 return !!

Real Estate / Buying farmland and keeping it as farmland in Poland [16]

Everyone who is interested in buying land in Poland do so ultimately because of the potential to build on that land whether they buy "building land" or farmland which they hope will be re-designated as building land in the future.

I was just thinking though that with the increase in food and energy prices could it not be an option just to continue to cultivate the land and make money that way ?

You could even go all the way and stick a few wind turbines on the land ! :)

Life / Youthful drinking in Poland [6]

whether the legal drinking age in Poland should be lowered from 18 to 21 as in the USA.

Can someone clarify this for me please ?

I thought the minimum age for purchasing alcohol in Poland was 18 but that was NO minimum age for consumption of alcohol. Is this correct ?

Food / Żubrówka + apple juice anyone? [41]

Everyone raves about Zubrowka with apple juice as if that's the ONLY combination that works.

I've tried this many times and wasn't that impressed.

A better drink is to mix Zubrowka vodka with Kaktus juice (made by Tymbark)

Travel / More activities in the Tri City area [3]

I've just come back from the Tri City and as always had a great time.

If you're looking for ideas then let me tell you what I saw this time round.

#1 The Zoo at Oliwa-Gdansk is certainly worth a visit especially if you have kids. It's a beautiful park in it's own right.

#2 Malbork castle is about an hour's drive from Gdansk and as the Yanks would say is truly "awesome".

#3 Take a ferry trip from Square Kościuszki in Gdynia to Hel Peninsula or for an hour's cruise around the Port of Gdynia.

Travel / June Weather in Poland - What to wear? [13]

No offence but asking people what the weather will be like in Warsaw during this summer is like asking us what the numbers on this week's Lotto are going to be.....................we don't know !

Polish summers are generally hot and sunny. When the sun does come out it tends to stay for a few weeks.

Ask us again closer to the time when you are arriving and you'll get a clearer idea.

Travel / Clean, safe, comfortable hotels to stay in Warsaw? [12]

I can thoroughly recommend the Polonia Palace Hotel having stayed there for three nights lasy month.

Average room rate per night was around £ 70 (my memory is a little fuzzy tonight). Prices go down significantly at weekends (inc. Fri nights).

Traffic noise is not an issue. Rooms are obviously double glazed and out room was on the 5th floor so no noise problems at all.

I would be very wary about recommending just one website for hotel prices in Poland as they all differ wildly in price and one day the cheapest website becomes the most expensive.

I booked with cityhotelsdirect but you MUST shop around as some well known sites wanted £ 120 per night !!!

It is a stunning hotel inside and outside with a great location. You won't be disappointed.

Travel / Does a strong Zloty damage Poland's tourism [14]

think price in Czestochowa is so high in July (and September) because in this time there is a lot of pilgirms.

Hi Lukasz,

I visit Czestochowa every year and normally stay with friends but I feel that I can't impose on them EVERY year hence me wanting to stay in a hotel this time round.

The pilgrims only swell the town's population in August (which would have been when your photo was taken OR during a papal visit).

There are other hotels in the town but the Patria has the best location. I'm still shocked at their room rates though !

Travel / Does a strong Zloty damage Poland's tourism [14]

Hi, I'm in the States - do you mean 107 British Pounds? Yikes, that is the price of some of the best hotels here!

Tell me about it ! What's more, I stayed 3 nights at the Polonia Palace in Warsaw only two weeks back and this is a classy 4 star hotel. The average rate for my stay was only £ 85 a night !!

Lukasz,

Thanks for the tip. I have checked that site and prices are indeed cheaper than other places I have looked, however, for 9 nights at the beginning of July the prices are nowhere near 99 zloty. Average rate is about 294 zloty.

Guest,

I've not really noticed massive differences on prices from English language to Polish language websites. In fact, I've spotted that there are a relatively small number of websites that have different skins to make them look different.

I also wonder why it is always more expensive to get a rate if you turn up at hotel reception than if you pre book. Surely, if they want to get rid of empty room they should be in a better position to discount the online prices.

Travel / Does a strong Zloty damage Poland's tourism [14]

I was looking to stay at the Patria hotel in Czestochowa in July. It's an old Communist built hotel that is now 3 star rated and is actually much nicer inside than the exterior suggests.

However, they are quoting prices of £ 107 per NIGHT without breakfast !!!!

Prices come down at the weekend to about £ 60 per night but as I want to stay there for a week I am seriously having to reconisder my plans !

Travel / Warsaw Uprising Museum [7]

Maybe something was lost in translation and perhaps it isn't a holy place. However, describing it as quite a spiritual and moving experience might be a better way of describing it.

Bottom line is this is possibly the best museum in Poland and you cannot understand or appreciate Warsaw without visiting this museum first

Travel / Warsaw Uprising Museum [7]

Anyone been? What were your thoughts ?

I thought it was a fascinating place to visit with intelligent use of interactive displays as well as memorabilia from the time. An essential visit if anyone is to understand modern day Warsaw.

I also went to the old Gestapo HQ in Aleja Szucha. A very sombre experience but again well worth the trip.
