News / Weird and quirky events and competitions in Poland. [8]

I've been approached by a TV production company in the UK who, for some reason, want to strange events/competitions for her presenters to compete against each other.

Examples already found by her in Europe are :-

· world mobile phone throwing COMPETITION

· WORLD SAUNA CHAMPIONSHIPS

· Wife Carrying World Championships

· Mosquito Swatting Championships

· Ant-Nest Sitting Competition

Any information on something along a similar theme would be appreciated.

Life / Polish funerals-no coffins inside a church ?? [5]

Someone told me that in Poland the coffin is never brought inside the church.

It is only taken to a chapel (often found inside or nearby the cemetery).

Is this true ?

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish immigrant in the UK. Ch. 2 - Stress [63]

Then why don't Poles take an example from UK and make Poland a stress free country? Why do Poles always think somewhere else is better than Poland? Why don't Poles abide by the rules of the country they are in instead of doing things the way they are done in Poland: illegally and against the rules.
If Poland would mobolize itself and the people try to make something out of themselves instead of thinking that other countries will support them and help them, then Poland would also be stress free.

Why do you post under two separate names when you're clearly the same person i.e identical avatars ???

Then why don't Poles take an example from UK and make Poland a stress free country? Clearly you think life for us Brits is stress free. It isn't.

Why do Poles always think somewhere else is better than Poland? I would hazard a guess that most of the Poles who think this way are still in Poland and haven't travelled much. As a Pole you're more aware than I am of the history your country has had to endure. 50 years of Communism with all it's negativity drip fed to the new generation....YOUR generation. It's hardly surprising people THINK it's better elsewhere.

Poland is a very, very young democracy and it's inevitable there will be growing pains. Your country has waited since 1939 to be truly free again and it's a pity that people like yourself are abandoning it.

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish immigrant in the UK. Ch. 2 - Stress [63]

The grass is always greener Ksysia.

As an Englishman the English weather depresses me. We haven't had a summer for the last three years ! At least in Poland your summer starts in May and finishes in September.

Polish politics is depressing and full of corruption but guess what ? It's the same over here ! The only difference is our politicans have been part of the system longer than yours have so they know how to cheat the system without getting caught most of the time.

Christmas actually means something in Poland. In the UK it's just an excuse to drink and shop.

Poland has it's fair share of alcoholics but have you ever been out on a Friday or Saturday night in the UK ? The behaviour of thousands of our lager louts puts the behaviour of one of your drunken men on a bicycle in the shade.

Your food is better. Raw ingredients such as tomatoes tastes amazing. Even your flowers smell. Walk down a Polish street in the summer and you're assualted by all the fragrances around you.

Your internal tourism infratructure is better than ours and more affordable. It's still affordable in Poland to go to Zakopane or rent an apartment in Sopot but try doing something similar in the UK and you soon realise it's cheaper to holiday abroad than it is in the UK.

Poland isn't perfect but it's got a lot going for it

Law / Selling on Allegro from UK [19]

There is a company in Manchester selling new and reconditioned Dell computers on Allegro and were even recruiting for a Polish speaker to deal exclusively with this market.

So I guess there is a profit to be made.

Related: Setting up a company on allegro.pl from the UK

I sell a product on the UK market and I have found that I can sell the same product on the Polish market, we have web sales in the UK but we would like to sell on allegro.pl I have tried to setup an account but it askes for my NIP number, this is you VAT number in Poland I think but as an English company we don't have an NIP and as our company in the UK is less than a year old we have less than £73,000 turnover so we don't have to register for tax in the UK and don't charge VAT in the UK. We are a UK registered company, can anyone tell us how we can sort an account with allegro.pl with UK registration.

The only problem is use you sell up to 3,000zl allegro.pl will ask for information ref our company ie verify are company and are NIP number will not mach our company. would this be a problem?? I think it would.

They are normally written three digits, three digits, two digits, two digits.

Travel / Hunting nearby Krakow [9]

It's not as complicated as some people are making out.

There are "hunting trips" organised for tourists subject to conditions.

Life / 15 year old girl, separated parents, father won't allow her to travel overseas [8]

My friend has a 15 yr old goddaughter in Poland who lives with her mother. The father never had anything to do with his daughter and moved to Australia some years ago.

The mother hasn't been able to get the father's parental rights struck off (for reasons I'm unsure of).

The father has promised a few times that he would see a notary in Australia but it's not really surprising that he's simply not bothered to do it.

The goddaughter would love to come to the UK for a short holiday but can't apply for a passport until both parents sign for her application, is this correct ?

She's too young for an ID card so is there anyway in which she can travel overseas ?

UK, Ireland / The paradox of Polish drivers getting car insurance in the UK [14]

My Polish girlfriend moved to the UK in October 2008.

I have phoned a couple of insurance companies about getting car insurance for her but they're not interested until she's been in the UK for 12 months.

I rang my own car insurance company and they said the same thing but admitted once she'd been in the UK for twelve months then they would be happy to insure her as she'd be less of a risk as she would have got more used to driving on the left hand side of the road. God knows how she can get used to driving over here if nobody will insure her.

Travel / Wizzair cancelling flights [23]

I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for my favourite airline.

Last week I priced up a flight from Liverpool to Katowice in July OR August and the price I got was over £ 200 !!

I checked again yesterday and it's gone back down to about £ 140 ????

Life / Thunderstorms in Poland [44]

What a terrifying experience are these eh ????

They don't mention these in the Lonely Planet guide to Poland !

In the UK we have a little rumble of thunder and occasionally Mr Lightning may decide to join in and this "meeting of elements" occurs approximately once a year.

In Poland, the sky turns black, the cloud breaks and armageddon is a being played out over your head. It doesn't go away in a few minutes but can last a few hours and any childhood fears you had shaken off regarding thunderstorms come back to visit, turning you into a whimpering wreck who just wants to hide under the table.

I really think Poland should do something about their thunderstorms as it's rather off putting for tourists.

Food / Why do Poles just not "understand" healthy eating ?? [82]

Many of my Polish friends are great cooks yet drown their food with fat, butter and/or cream !!

When I try to tell them some of these are not necessary and unhealthy they look at me as if I'd just announced the moon is made from cheese.

Is healthy eating unpopular in Poland?

Travel / Nice place to holiday in the North of Poland? [26]

Sopot is the place you need to go, very small place, extremely safe. You can walk to Gydinia, along the coastline. There are only small bars and cafes, and a beautiful beach for kids to play on all day. No drunken bumbs wandering around, and no hoardes of drunken stag-nighters. It is a totally relaxing place, right near the train station and you can visit Malborgh Castle, which is awesome and only 40 mins from the local railway station.

I would hghly recommend. I took my kids there when they were little and we loved it, it has not changed for many years.

Totally agree ! Sopot is within walking distance from Gdynia (which itself is worth seeing). Gdansk is also a 15 min drive away.

Sopot is a lovely seaside resort with nice restaurants and bars. It also has an AquaPark and the Zoo at Gdansk is worth seeing.

Using Sopot as a base, Hel Peninsula is around a 50 min drive away but you can catch a ferry from Gdynia to Hel

Travel / Now Gdansk is tipped as a hot spot for 2009 [24]

"This is just an advertising message to foreigners...." duh ! you don't say ??

When you're not stating the obvious then you're talking utter diatribe. "Gdansk minus the cheap vodka is nothing" ???? Unless I missed something when did Gdansk gain it's reputation as having the cheapest vodka in Poland ?

Gdansk is 3 cities in 1 as Gdynia and Sopot are all well worth visiting. Hel Peninsula ?? Malbork Castle ??? And all of these sights in a single weekend break !

Travel / Now Gdansk is tipped as a hot spot for 2009 [24]

Agreed. Poland is finally coming out of the shadows. I still have a bee in my bonnet about the national Polish Tourist Office doing virtually diddly squat for Polish tourism.

In my northern town, why do I see posters for Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary and nothing for Poland ??

Anyway enough of my rant....

Gdansk is now being labelled the "new Krakow".

Life / Cyfrowy Polsat issues [11]

It's actually for my mother (I don't speak much Polish).

I'm also a little concerned as I'm not sure if you're legally allowed to watch Polish subscription cable channels outside of Poland

Life / Cyfrowy Polsat issues [11]

Merged: My Polish decoder box (Polsat Cyfrowy UK) is now locked !!

I live in the UK and subscribed to Cyfrowy Polsat. Today I got a message saying

"decoder locked please contact service provider" and now I cannot view any channels.

Anyone else had similar problems ?

UK, Ireland / How long before a newly arrived Pole can buy something on credit ? [24]

You must also know that insurance companies here are very likely to rob you blind if you don't have a British driving licence (no matter how long have you had your national licence

Really ?? So regardless if this guy has been driving in Poland for 20 yrs they would still sting him on insurance ?

UK, Ireland / How long before a newly arrived Pole can buy something on credit ? [24]

A friend of mine has asked me this question.

He will be starting permanent work in a few weeks here in the UK and wants to get a cheap car ASAP.

How long would he have to wait before he can take out HP ? Is renting a car a possibility ?
