time to upgrade :)

At the end of the day users choose simplicity and usefulness over unnecessary noise and bellsNwhistles. Hueg, UkinPoland, yours todays, tomorrows, in a weeks, in a months posts here will just prove that. :)

agreed but you are the one who added videos. Smilies are hardly "whistle-bells_noises" they were very peacefull as i remember

"added videos"? - we added an embedded link to a video, not a video feature. Similar to Image Link.

Because adding more and more "whistle-bells-noise" features would make a forum site like this a "myspace-like site" (which we want to avoid).

Myspace and a forum site have no relevance to each other though

Agree.

Thanks for noticing - hopefully most users will agree with you and me on that [if not now, then in the future].

It's quite simple. Even an autonomous fellow like yourself can understand it. We hope. If I say 'I' I am talking to myself, which I realise is what you're advocating, however, we tend to find involving others works better when forging relationships.

I subscribe to the popping candy theory that if the growth of reason is to continue, then the diversity of individuals and their opinions, aims, and purposes must never be interfered with but then again, we could all conform.

By the way, didn't you just take this off topic? I do hope you will chastise yourself very severely. :)

I try to speak easy language, but let me rephrase. If you do not like the forum, or you cannot live without smilies, signatures, or any other feature, you are free not not to visit this site any more. I cannot find a way to express it in a simplier way, sorry.

How about we all just log off, open up word pad and talk to ourselves?

You are welcome to do that (not sure why you try to speak in the name of all users).

i dont understand why we have to have such a basic forum, is it because of server space or speed?

Maybe myspace.com would meet the standards of some users, but we are not here to compete with myspace.

Feedback / how can i log out??? [19]

OK, I updated the image (post #3 above) that shows how to log out. It takes 2 steps instead of 1.

Keeping the logout link in the Settings allows users to check (at least from time to time) the features they can use as registered members. Also, most users use their computers at home so logging in/out every time they go to the site doesn't make it easier for them.

Feedback / what happens with moderation? [15]

When moderating, the name of the author does not determine if the post is edited/removed/moved or not.

OK - you are an anonymous user (who cannot even post in the FAQ & Feedback section - and there's a reason for that).

Then you claim something about "changing standards" which we (who spent online 16 hours a day each and read every post) are not aware of. You also refer to "your earlier posts" which could possibly be made by any other anonymous user.

But it's your opinion and we respect that.

why before off topic posts were removed very strict

Sigh.. If you read some posts from the FAQ section you will notice many users complained the moderation is too strict. You claim otherwise. We'll then focus on doing our job the best we can (to satisfy most users -- IF possible :).

Please register/log in and you'll most likely see all posts (anonymous users do not see all the forums).

Feedback / Checker: "You have unread messages in your queue..." [17]

May I ask the the reason to have a Checker? Is it like "Favorite Places"????
Or is used to just eliminate only those sites that interest the person?

You can go to Checker, then Options and check/uncheck the forums you are interested in. You can add any topic to your favourite topics (by clicking on the star graphic near the topic title) and it will be always easily available from your Checker.

Feedback / Please don't spoil other peoples threads [20]

long story short - people will repeat visit a forum for 2 broad reasons - firstly, that it provides them with information that is valuable to them and that this information is continuously updated; secondly, that there is a sense of community which they feel they can belong to... of these 2 factors, each is dependent on the individual visitor which is why you will get some posters who visit very occasionally for a translation only [type 1] and those of us who spend way too much time here for it to be healthy [type 2]

I agree. And that fits my point about first-time visitors that [providing valuable information - "the first broad reason"] is crucial for people to determine if they are actually going to experience the [sense of community - "the second broad reason"]. Without the relevant, on-topic information it is not possible for a prospective member to go to the next stage and become a part of the community. I'm not sure why you originally signed up as a member at Polish Forums, but most likely you found this site by chance when looking for information about Poland. Then you have probably found relevant information in topics about Poland and Polish people (not in Off-Topic discussions). As you may notice, the majority of guest users post messages related to Poland - they don't engage in off-topic discussions.

Would you become a member of this community if you had to go through dozens of posts to find an on-topic post and most other messages you saw in "Poland topics" discussions were private conversations between a few members about things not related to the topics? Even if the conversations were funny?

Again, the Off-Topic discussion has been created to talk about anything one could ever imagine. So if we move unrelated to the "Poland topics" messages to Off-Topic forum, you can still continue your conversations there.

here are many reasons for dozens of modorators... those of us who visit other forums with a different set up of moderators will know the pros and cons of different moderating styles... and how quickly a change in this style, as with just the graphical representation of a forum, can impact on its success or falior... which is a reason 1. i had reservations about daffy becoming a moderator and 2. why i didn't particularly want to know about it

The moderating style and the website's goal has always been the same - to bring people interested in Poland and Polish issues together and make sure they enjoy being here by posting messages that follow the social and technical rules. The rules have been there for over a year now. One moderator (like Daffy) takes his time to explain the rules even to long-term members by writing a note why a particular topic or message was edited or moved. Another moderator doesn't do that - both techniques have their pros and cons, but personally I prefer the first style (even though it is much more time-consuming). As you noted, you visit many different forums and each of them has a different "moderating styles" - it suggests there is no one, ideal style. Regarding your "reservations" - it is not possible that 100% of all users approve something.

if you want to know more about forum dynamics and how they apply to the wonderful world of marketing i can send you some links

Having had a degree in Information and Computer Systems + Economics, possibly some of the links point to my articles about online communities, but you may still PM them to me :).

which make him laugh again...

But how do you know people come here to have fun?:) Especially that only a handful of members actually actively participate in such chit-chats?

Maybe most readers would think - "OK, I found the topic I like. But why do I have to go through 100 of posts and waste my time to find the relevant information ON THE ORIGINAL topic in post 101? Where are the moderators - why do they keep unrelated posts in this thread?"

----

To go further - why all established forums have sometimes dozens of moderators? What, in your opinion, are they for and why do they keep them?

i understand that... but its not an arguement... its a diktat

Look at this from a first-time visitor. He/she searches for a topic about Poland on Google that s/he finds interesting. The first two or three posts are relevant and topic.

Then two or three (not representative number of all forum users) start chatting about unrelated or hardly related things. Do you think such first-time visitor would really enjoy reading that? If you are interested in Polish soccer league and start reading an article about the latest Polish soccer games, you expect the whole article to talk about Polish soccer league, correct? Would you read the whole article if after the first two paragraphs the author starts bragging about cricket games? Most people wouldn't and would complain to the editor..

Feedback / Language thread feedback [3]

It could be possible, but on the other hand it could also be annoying for others to have to go through several sticky topics to get to a new one.

For this reason we created "Add to Favorites" feature where you can add any topic you like to your favorites and easily keep track of it.

Feedback / Regarding an announcement on cleaning the forums [18]

For example this summer if I post some pics from Taste of Polonia
and so called moderator doesnt like me, they can just erase what I post?

Why would I waste my time even posting at all, it would be like being Blackballed.

I think a moderator should not be a previous disgruntled member.

Just my opinion, youre thoughts other members and Admin?????

We'll talk about it later. For sure we won't have a moderator who takes action based on his/her personal preferences...

I think maybe Matty is referring to threads that went off topic (not necessarily in the Off Topic Lounge) but still made for interesting reading.

Then we always try to move the messages that are off-original topic and create a new topic. But if there are more than two topics discussed in one thread, it's almost impossible to do so.

I don't think it will be going in the right direction Frank, this is a discussion forum, where you speak your mind, it seems now we will have to just agree with each other, hmmm what a great result!!!!

Quite the opposite - we welcome all kinds of opinions (even extreme) as long as they are ON THE SUBJECT of the thread. :)

Feedback / FORUM RANKING [18]

The maximum number of stars one can get is 6 (******).

Daffy, based on your current average number of posts per day you will get your 6th star in about 684 days.

You can calculate yourself how many posts you need to get the 6th star :).
