Feedback / The "Poland Polls" feature has been released [18]

To admin: you seem to take polls seriously but then post your own if you need relevant results. Editing MY poll questions is like editing user commentary.

I guess it's good someone takes it seriously. While you can have thousands of posts as a member, your one poll may actually have a stronger audience and voice. The problem with polls is that they may build more stereotypes if they are not properly constructed.

If 1,000 people read the poll's results today, they won't usually care about who posted the poll. But many of them will actually remember the poll's results which mean they will build an opinion. If you don't give enough objective options, ask a second question in a poll's answer, allow too many/too few answers, it could be at least confusing.

Before creating a poll you must learn what makes a good poll or survey because I don't have much time editing polls either..

Feedback / The "Poland Polls" feature has been released [18]

BTW, someone has just created two polls within a few minutes. It is odd, because to create a good and useful poll it usually takes a longer time. Normally the polls would have been deleted, but it could be a good practice.

Before creating a poll it's important to actually learn what makes a good poll or survey question. Here is an informative starting point for those who are thinking about creating a poll: statpac.com/surveys/question-qualities.htm

Feedback / The "Poland Polls" feature has been released [18]

The "Poland Polls" forum feature has been released. Now all PolishForums members who have posted a specified number of forum messages (currently 50+) may create a poll when they start a new thread.

There are a couple of very important rules which must be followed in order to make sure the polls are both objective and reasonable:

- Polls must cover a reasonable number of possible choices. The selected choices must be as objective as possible. For example, if someone starts a poll about "Who will be the next president of Poland," the presented choices must include all reasonable possibilities, not only those represented by the person who started the poll.

- Polls must closely relate to Poland and Polish issues. For this reason, it is not possible to create polls in all forums.

Polls which don't meet the above criteria are subject to being deleted at any time.

One member may vote one time only. It is not possible for forum moderators to artificially inflate the results.

Thank you for supporting the PF project.

They look blurry.

They may do (but not yours as I saved it and re-uploaded) - check now.

The script was updated and improved; the negative is that some previously-uploaded files may look distorted because of a different resizing algorithm..

Feedback / Forum templates meet the "Author's mode" standas. Updates notice. [4]

Forum templates have been updated so that now they are compatible with the "author's mode" available in some web browsers and RSS feeds. The "author's mode" allows to view web pages without any colors, graphics, and formatting (only black text on white background, with invisible tables). This feature meets the web accessibility standards. In the process, we improved the loading process of pages so that now all thread pages should load even faster than before.

Throughout this week plan to update some other scripts; in the next couple of days some error messages or inadequate look may be experienced by some users.

Feedback / CLOSING THE TRANSLATION THREADS [55]

excellent suggestion W

Thanks for the suggestion, but it would be like opening a Pandora box. What's next - a little tag for "religion", "sport", "Polish-German relations", "Polish-Russian" relations, "relationship", "human rights" etc. expert? - it would be a full-time job for a few people to administrate it and then try to be objective. Not to mention numerous threads that member X shouldn't be "expert" and member Y should be, etc.

Feedback / Poster's gender not included - bad for translations. [15]

Admin changed this just after I commented on how I approved of both 'quote' and 'reply' being in the posters' boxes.

Where was that? Maybe here: polishforums.com/new_right_sided_layout_discussion-23_20416_20.html#msg398052.

The only change I'd now suggest is putting the posters' details back on the left, with the date, time and quote button, etc. aligned to the left.

don't mentioned it! we might end up with purple tomorrow ;)

Right, exactly as based on your [polishforums.com/archives/2009/feedback-23/new-right-sided-layout-discussion-20416/21/] - own experience.

Feedback / Received a vulgar email.. [9]

Hello,

Your message implies it is PolishForums moderators, creators, or administrators fault one of the members sent you a hate email...?

Maybe we should pre-moderate all posts, all PM messages, and all e-mails before they reach the public or private eye?

Or removing the email and PM contact features should be a way to go?

Thanks for your input.

Feedback / why was my thread in the job offer forum deleted? [12]

it was an job offer.....that i have posted also on other boards to find employees. so what

So it means that you think following the boards' rules is not something you should care about; you just post whatever and however you want and hope to get it just because.

i am out..fu

Hopefully your attitude and tactfulness will get you a lot of loyal and efficient workers. Don't use it too often when they ask you for their salary though.

Feedback / why was my thread in the job offer forum deleted? [12]

Most likely the same or very similar ad was already posted on the Internet and we don't allow duplicate content.

Another possible reason could be found in your own words:

sorry to hijack this thread, but....

Law / Be careful where you buy building materials in Poland! [12]

This is my reply to finT on Dec 21, 2007:

So we suggest that if someone has a big problem with a Polish-owned company, it could be discussed here on case-by-case basis -- but we don't plan to set up a separate "The rip-off companies from Poland" section.

Admin

I never mentioned it's prohibited to name the company as finT now may suggest.

Law / Be careful where you buy building materials in Poland! [12]

You can name the company's name on the forum if you like.

--

People share their opinions and experiences here all the time. Just because Fin had a bad experience, someone else on here might be able to say they had a good experience with the company.

What if a competitor of companyX wants to slander companyX so that the customers avoided them and went to his/her company? How would you check the truthfulness of the complaint and who would be willing to do the checking and take responsibility?

Feedback / Wrong attribution of quote [8]

The automatic quote function is for the benefit of the users. If someone doesn't know who he/she is quoting, then it's not really worth reading the post. An alternative way would be to completely remove the poster's name, but then it would take much more time to try to figure out who was the quoted poster.

Ps. You need to register if you want to post in this section.

Feedback / Why are some requests for translation shoved into the random chat thread? [42]

So this first post of mine was treated as 'potential trouble-maker-troll' material?

I don't remember a first post of yours or any other member who posted more than several hours ago..

Wyspi, I did not say that anyone wants me to leave. I disagree with Admin on moving first posters to a random chat thread before they know the ins and outs of PF. I don't know why this lady was moved, while he had patience with me and - through changing my post titles - taught me how to do it.

Frankly, I had to correct your "Translation please" topic yet a couple of days ago ;}.

This is not just about a post being moved, hun. This is also about a person being pushed aside without having a fair chance. I will never be able to keep my mouth shut about something like that ever.

Right... It's the end of the new year so let's assume you and the other "oppressed members" win - now you can enjoy your freedom.

Feedback / Why are some requests for translation shoved into the random chat thread? [42]

Who says it has to be random? What about if some employer, as an example, had to relate something important about a job to their employee? Maybe they speak good english, but don't know a certain technical term that would make their job easier? Simple things like that. Or somebody in a relationship and just wants to show how they feel. Could make somebody's day - and why wouldn't anybody benefit? I can't fathom why not.

There were several situations when a random poster (either a new member or even anonymous poster) went to the site and posted their message to translate. After it was translated, s/he emailed us and had the cheeks to demand that "their translation thread" must be deleted because it contained some "personal information." When it was deleted, a person who did the translation complained that "his/her thread was deleted".

That's why we tend to treat new members who come here and in their first posts request translations as potential trouble-makers or trolls.. This is what we can tell from our experience.

yourniagara.ca was deployed two months ago

I would say it's been online since 2004 - web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.yourniagara.ca

I know that those who only come on wanting translations are not contributing to the forum... but maybe, by finding that translation they want, they are helping a fellow Polish person: were it a fellow Scot, I'd be pleased about something like that and not annoyed...why isn't it allowed/okay?

What if 50% of all members were coming here just to "want translations"? I'm not sure how a person who even learns English or Polish could benefit from a random text posted in a translation section. Plus, those who are long-term members and are genuinely interested in discussions about Poland tend to be annoyed by a person who out of the blue requests or demands translations (sometimes in unrelated threads because "it's urgent").

A similar situation is/was with the job section people from different countries wanted to post inadequate job offers or requests.

Other than some admin functions unrelated to the Internet, I run two minicipal websites, a couple libraries and I am on the technical commitee of websites whose functionality, complexity and associated financial liability yours doesn't even come close to. Your daily hits are likely comparableto our hourly ones. Check it out: URL. And yes, I am one of the website's designers.

Referring to the bold sentence above should be enough:

Yourniagara.ca has a traffic rank of: 1,861,447
Polishforums.com has a traffic rank of: 144,016

(the lower the number, the bigger traffic)
Source: alexa.com

But I'm not here to provide professional or any other comparisons and I appreciate your input on the technical matters.
