Food / Are there any 24 hour establishments (stores, restaurants) in Poland? [12]

Gdansk has at least 1 supermarket open 24/7 - a Tescos just off the Obwodnica.
And our local petrol station (in the nearly-depths of the countryside) is open through the night as well - great if you run out of things like icecream, chocolate or motor oil at 3am.

UK, Ireland / Sending a parcel to Poland from UK [30]

My mum in NI has been sending me 2kg parcels for some time (the 10quid version).
So far, only 1 has been definitely 'lost' and that was 5 years ago (what the thief did with chocolate and M&S maternity tights is anyone's guess).

UK, Ireland / Setting up shop, a N Ireland Polish migrant experience. [28]

careful ... your nice side will explode soon ...
s'ok, though -- I've been gone over 10 years from NI and I've learned to live without lots of things -- put another way ... the floodgates have been hammered shut and I daren't open them even a crack ...

Old Rossorry ....

O'Roartys/Donnellys ... mmmm ...
'fraid you're on the other side of The Great Divide ... let me just gently murmur Collegiate and all will be clear.
but i said goodbye and thanks for all the fish many many years ago.

seepage? i think we're talking blowout. Get me in Dunnes in the chocolate biscuit aisle and bad things happen...

there. i knew that smooth concerned exterior would crack given enough bytes.

biscuits are not bloody biscuits if they have chocolate on them. And maybe toffee too. Or orange flavoured cream. Or maybe peppermint? Or ../slap/

If anything comes to me I'll scream - otherwise i can survive with Delicje and Jezyki ...

Life / Queuing and Polish people [49]

oh yes .... all sounds very (horribly) familiar
you need to give up any idea of "personal space, do not enter here" when queueing in Poland - otherwise there will be another warm human body in it before you can breathe deeply.

Life / Queuing and Polish people [49]

Not everyone jumps the queue, but the comment above about drivers jumping queues is true. Only today I watched as a car mounted the pavement, drove forward and then joined the line of cars again. It was a sort of 'road rage' as there was a massive traffic jam at the time

I've seen a bendy-bus do the same :D
(and yes, it was scary)

Study / Lanuage school in Tri-City - advice learning Polish in Poland [12]

I guess you're looking for this place ...?...

americanschool.pl/historia_us.htm

I can't give you much info about the quality of the teaching - we live in the TriCity area but our kids go to local schools.

When are you arriving?

Study / Lanuage school in Tri-City - advice learning Polish in Poland [12]

bis-gdansk.pl

gosh :D

p.s.
Szkoła Podstawowa Nr 69
im. Gen. Stanisława Sosabowskiego
seems to share the same address

p.p.s
if you go to google maps and type in "Gdansk Zielony Trójkąt" you should get an idea of where it is. the short story could be "down behind the Opera House". longer study of the area would suggest it's a bit run-down (fwiw). If anyone suggested I would have to get there from Gdynia of a morning I'd say "no" :D [think Trojmiasto, think gridlock]

Heinz Baked beans? I can get them in Real any day of the week ...

or chipolatas wrapped in streaky bacon ....

my mum swears she sent me a christmas cake (good old Lakeland ...) but, alas, nothing so far ...

Life / FLY TIPPING HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH!! [11]

on our last visit it was the plastic coca cola bottles ... not sure if that's better or worse than fly-tipping, but the family sure as h won't (can't) pay for refuse collection..

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

would this link help?

vitamarket.pl/sklep/k181-Zywnosc-dla-dzieci.html

p.s. my experience is that it's commonly available. that link might not represent the 'lowest possible price' e.g. i think i've seen it in biedronka ...

Life / Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland [235]

I flew from Belfast International at the end of January and yes, there was a similar stampede at the Gate.
however ...
once I told the getting-increasingly-irritated attendant how to screech "A" the Polish way, some of the crowd did back off a bit. She was getting nowhere using an English 'A' to identify priority boarders.

She was very capable actually - refushed to open the door and pushed her way down through the crowd to drag forward families with young kids etc.

i put it down to poor English skills plus panic about not getting A Seat
and a dash of Every Man For Himself.
On the stairs/walk to the aircraft you need to make yourself (or your group) as *wide* as possible to prevent the Run Down From Behind effect. ...

(on reflection I'd rather put up with a bit of "elbows wide, boys and girls" than have to go through Copenhagen and England to get back to NI)

News / Undertakers in Lodz :( [24]

on the other hand, there was this ...

news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1301702,00.html

which I know is nothing to do with Poland, I merely offer to suggest that other countries have their own issues ...

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

i used to get it in the Geant at the top of Spacerowa - the place is "Real" now.
The Real website only lists Bebiko but I don't know what the shelves actually carry ... surely more than 1 brand ... I'll be there at the weekend and will try to have a look.

Do you have a car? Tesco, Real, Carrefour and Auchan are all within driving distance (if you're desperate enough) so, as long as the stuff is (still) available in the country, it should be possible to track it down somewhere... (famous last words in this place :) ).

no, I can't take that one as a joke. and neither will anyone who has ever been involved with the topic. it's not a 'safe' topic for joking about, trust me on that one.

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

lurching back to the topic.

NaN 2 and Real
about 12.50pln for the 350g box
comes in the iron-enriched version too.

Nestle seems to have a comfortable foothold in the country's supermarkets...

any other info you want feel free to PM me.
