Life / Most famous, respected Polish last names? [46]

P.S. I think the basketball player you're talking about is Dirk Nowitski, the NBA MVP? From Germany, but obviously has Polish heritage! (I'm from Dallas so I've heard aaaall about him!)

of course. You wouldn't believe how many times i get called dirk, which i think its funny cause i'm only 5"6. :D

Language / Good books about polish grammar? (online purchase) [19]

anyone know of a place online or something where i can get polish textbooks, or just really good book about polish grammar mostly. I have no problem learning vocabulary and pronunciation and that stuff, i just need to learn about sentence structures and verb conjugations and tenses and cases and all that "good" stuff. I already speak Russian pretty well so i have somewhat of a background in slavic based languages and can understand a very limited amount of polish already. Oh yeah, and i can read polish fairly well (just need to review slightly) but i don't know what most of it means :D

i don't know, if anyone knows of any places let me know please.

i'm not a student per say, i'm in the army but i'm at the special operations language school. they have a small library and its good for the subjects they have but they haven't taught polish there for a while. I'll try looking those up.

Life / Smoking ban - will this be coming to Poland like other EU countries? [183]

to joepilsudski, i agree with you about it hurting business. I'm not a smoker but i don't care if people around me smoke, i've come to the conclusion that i'm going to die of cancer someday anyways, for one cause there are so many types of cancer out there, and two, i'm a big smokeless tobacco user (whose thinking about quitting but probably won't...for a while anyways) idk, i think smokers should be respectful of others wishes to not smoke around them, but i don't think they shouldn't be allowed to smoke. and taking smoking out of bars? wtf is up with that, that's like the best place to smoke...i guess, besides outside. haha.

Language / A Native American or a Native Pole: Who is better into which language? [116]

i don't hardly know any english gammar. I couldn;'t even tell you what the tenses for english grammar are. English grammar is starting to be a subject that is neglected in school, most the high schools around where i live don't focus on grammar. to me grammar is hard in any language! haha

Language / Good books about polish grammar? (online purchase) [19]

thats a good website tkoch. I wish they had a place to get alot of books on polish subjects and the language, besides books-a-million and barnes & nobles there aren't any. Most the people of Polish decent here are in the military and came from Chicago, New York, etc etc.

Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

i always wish i was brought up speaking another langauge. My polish relatives quick speaking it a while ago i assume. I think my grandfather new a little polish (at least the curse words) and when it got down to my dad and his brother and sister none of them speak it, my dad knows one polish phrase and that's "Kiss my ass" so i'm assuming thats one of the only ones that got used a lot. haha. I wish i could get fluent enough in Russian (sorry guys, not many Polish courses around here) that whenever i get married and have kids i could speak it to them all the time. I'm still progressing alot (especially with the grammar) and hopefully by that time i'll be pretty good at it. I really want to learn polish, its hard to find people to teach it though.

Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

i know a guy who has some friends where one of the parents is from Italy or spain (I think) and one is from Germany, and one will ask a question in spanish or italian and then the kids will answer in english and the other parent will respon in german. they are all trilingual!!! That just blows my mind. America sucks on the foreign langauge thing. None of my friends i grew up with speak another language fluently. I'm so jealous of bilingual children! haha

Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

most schools where i live don't start teaching foreign language until junior high or high school, and usually its two years and bad teaching. I took spanish for 2 or 3 years and all i can remember is "Yo tengo gozo gozo en mi corazon. Donde?! En mi corazon, Donde! Enmi corazon...etc etc" a song. And Yo tengo ______. pretty much all i remember is Yo tengo, gozo, and en mi corazon. and donde.

I think if i can find people who know russian i can get pretty good at it, i'm not too horrible at it now, and i watch alot of movies and listen to alot of music and podcasts and stuff in russian, but i want to practice talking too.

Actually, when i was in first grade a guy would come into our class and teach us some french, but it didn't last long. I wish they kept that up, i could be fluent in french now if they did!!

Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

yeah, i'm gonna try my best to keep up with russian. I have a few books. And they are slightly above my level in reading, which i think is good, it'll challenge me to continue learning. But i want to find some people in my area to practice with, but there are hardly any!

Love / Polish mail order brides? [89]

Isn't the avg. female life expectancy in the 70s, whereas the male life expectancy is in the 50s? i had a russian woman ask me what i thought about russian mail order brides. And after i responded i asked her how russians in general perceived it, she said most don't really like it and most women don't want to do it. idk, thats just one opinion though. i'd hope most wouldn't want too.
