USA, Canada / Acquire a job in Poland being in the US? [6]

Is it possible to acquire a job in Poland being from the US? I understand that many Americans there teach english. Is that it? I work with GSM networks but I dont speak much polish. What are the possibilities for success?

Thanks! I had an idea that my lack of Polish would hinder me. I just have so much damn fun when I'm there. Wish there was another way. Maybe open a business....

News / World-wide and famous brands from Poland [41]

Well, and when we`re talking about the EU - then about 1/4 of the Euro-coins have been made by the Polish State Mint

That's interesting to know.

Orlen I've also heard of. I'm sure as the years go by PL products will become more known by the rest of the world.

Language / The Value of Movies in Learning Polish [40]

I enjoy TV in PL. It's funny when there's a monopoly(seems like it anyway) on the dubbing. The same man doing evryone elses voice over with no excitement in his voice.

For those that live in PL...Is it the same guy? :)

So even if you`d be there that`s not very representative

Yeah British...try staying where I did in Boleslawow and really get some PL country culture :)

And to educate you a little bit, Belvedere - Chopin are 2 of the best premium vodkas

Is it true that there is a mushroom in PL that looks similar to the ones usually picked, that can kill you?

Do people often die from them or get very ill? Is it common for these mistakes to be made?

Me too. I think it would depend on the station. When I was there I thought that's how it was... from rumors. I though wrong :) When I was there I heard the same music that I heard where I live (near NYC) and we play everything here. I do think that there are more pop and club songs played in PL because it's popular all over europe. It probably also depends on the radio station where you're located. While driving across PL I've noticed a few stations that played old pop and 80's but the majority werre up to date. I did find it funny when I heard a few songs that were american but never played there and some Pl ppl knew the words.

You simply have to go to the forest to pick mushrooms with someone who's a bit experienced in it

Yes. I'll be doing that in July :) I love mushrooms! I found it interesting to see her father come home with a basket full of mushrooms and her mother sat home all day and seperated them...some in jars...some pickled....some dried. To take the whole day and dedicate it to the shrooms was interesting because here in the US most don't have time in their daily lives to dedicate the day to food...unless you're overweight :) We'd rather go spoil ourselves......sad.

train times ?

Yeah. It wasn't a channel with any talking. It looked almost like an old black w/ green type computer screen. had the weather, train times, and airport information. it was in Poznan. maybe it's not available elsewhere.

Do you think that I can bring a portable DVD player and just use a euro adapter? Would the TV recognize the player?

BTW thanks for your help.

News / Poland- Visa Waiver Program [55]

The US Senate has recently passed America's Borders Act S. 2454 Visa Waiver for Poland. I havent heard much new about it and thought that there may be some more info coming from Poland.

From what I understand is that in order to qualify-
Refusal rate: In order to qualify for VWP participation that country must average less than 3% for the previous fiscal year. I heard that Poland has a 30% refusal rate. True?

Must be sufficiently stable to ensure that conditions which could affect VWP qualifying criteria (such as overstay rates in the U.S.) are not likely to change dramatically in the future.

VWP candidate countries must demonstrate that effective border controls are in place for all territory under their control. I believe PL borders are well secure. Is this also true?

The degree to which host country law enforcement agencies cooperate with U.S. counterparts. i've never had any issue with PL police. I often hear stories of corruption(which we also have in the US). Do most/all officers speak english as a requirement?

Any security concerns that could be raised by a country's admission into the VWP program will be considered. I don't see PL as being a terrorist threat....at all.

I think the only thing that may be holding you back is the refusal rate. Do you know why it's so high? Now that you're part of the EU do you think it will decrease?

Thaoughts/Comments?

News / Poland- Visa Waiver Program [55]

I think it's because of the... US clerks

So it's not the Polish govt that refuses these visas? I don't understand why we would refuse them and at the same time ask for such a low percentage.

Do you see it decreasing since it may hold PL back?

I'm hoping that it happens before they decide to force us to have visas. It's so unfair.

Hmm - they passed this act already? Does it mean it's the law now?

Not yet. It had to be voted. i can't find too much information on it though. i have to keep looking. That's why i'm looking for news out of PL. I'd look at PL news websites but most I can't understand.

Wow I'm surprised to see no comments about this.

Yeah man I'm all for it. I just don't see it as fair. my GF is trying to get a tourist Visa now. I hope it will be a little easier. I sent a letter and filled out a form with my financial status and responsibilities. Hope it works out well. Any suggestions to better her chances?
