Genealogy / STEMPORA - Help Please! [9]

I am searching for information about the Stampora family. I believe that my GGF Clemens Stempora came from Podhorce, Thomaszow, Lublin. Does anyone live near this town, or know of this name ?

Thank you,
GrandeSande

Genealogy / STEMPORA - Help Please! [9]

Thank you for taking the time to search for this information. I do already have it and was hoping that I could find someone in Poland who actually knows of the family, or if any of them still exist in the town of Podhorce.

I still cannot find any record of Clemens immigrating, whilst I have found those of Bartholomew, Adam and Josef.
I believe that Adam must be a cousin, and did not even know of Josef being a brother until recently.
Thank you again for your help.
Sincerely, GrandeSande

USA, Canada / Obtaining Church Records in U.S. [19]

Koach,
The Archdiocese of Joliet has many Catholic Parishes.

Holy Cross Catholic Church address is:
Rev. Christopher Groh, Pastor
Holy Cross Church
901 Elizabeth Street
Joliet, IL 60435-4684 USA

Sts.Cyril and Methodius Church address is:
Rev. James Pajkos, OFM, Pastor
Saints Cyril and Methodius Church
704 Landau Avenue
Joliet, IL 60432-1938 USA

St. Nicholas Church was a Russian Orthodox church but is now:
Annunciation of Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Parish
14610 Will Cook Road
Homer Glen, IL 60491 USA

They are also connected to the original Mt. Calvary Cemetary, so you might ask them if they could advise you on how to obtain burial records.

Most churches and cemetaries in the US are very busy and are understaffed, especially when it comes to searching for records. Genealogy is very popular in the US now and everyone is searching for records.

You might want to send a letter of inquiry as to how to obtain their records, if they still have them and if there is a service charge. I would include your E-mail address so that they might want to answer you this way.

I wish you success!

PS. Do you have a FHC in Poland ?

Trying to find guest poster "sloviak"

I am trying to get in touch with "sloviak", who answered my post on March 2, 2007.

It was concerning our STEMPORA genealogy. He (Michael Stempora) is my cousin, and I would like to speak with him.

Any help would be appreciated.

Genealogy / Looking for Viekkich (Wielkie?) Oczy, town in Poland [4]

I Googled Viekkich Oczy, Poland, and came up with Wielkie Oczy

I then entered this name into Google Maps and found that Wielkie Oczy is located just West of the Ukraine border, East of Krakow, North of Przemysl and South of Lublin.

Perhaps this is the town you are looking for.
Coming from the "States", that's the best I can do!

Polish American Forum a mail in list where you can ask anything about "things Polish"

Genealogy / Siekierczyna/Siekierczyn? [6]

I went to the website,
jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp
and typed in
SIEKIERCZYRNA and came up with no location in Poland with this name.

I typed in SIEKIERCZYN and came up with many possibilities.

Give it a try and see if any of the places might fit in to your search.

This is a very helpful website. Good luck!

Genealogy / Cemeteries in Poland [7]

usualy think of themselvs as being an "upper class", should have thought of preserving something for thir children. What are your thoughts on that?

Right on, Patrycja!!!

Oh, yea, my "upper class" grandparents, and great grandparents came here and lived in the lap of luxury!!! The men worked for the railroad companies, the coal yards and the docks for long hours. My father and his brothers worked on the docks and helped to support those at home. My grandmother, who took care of her household of husband, four sons and her mother in law, went to work in the afternoon to clean other people's houses. She was wise enough to put away this money she earned, and when one of these houses came up for sale, she had enough saved to buy it.

These "upper class" people were living in the worst areas of cities and were not treated as high society. Many did not speak English, or have skills other than strength and determination. They worked at these hard labor jobs for little pay. But.... they all had the same dream, and that was to have a better life than they came from.

Yes, they loved their homeland, left their loved ones and put up with many hardships in order to give their children and grandchildren a better life. My grandfather would not talk of what he left, he said he was an American now. His homelife and his heart was Polish, but he would not share with others what he left in Poland, and worked so hard for, in America.

Please don't insult his integrity by calling him "upper Class"!

And, 30764, I'm not sure what you mean by preserving something for their children. How and what were they supposed to preserve?

Love / Symbol of polish of love to surprise my fiance [26]

Forget the roses, BORING!!!

Take her on a picnic, feed her strawberries and creme, give her a bunch of dasies or violets... if she like these, she likes you. If she loves you, it's the thought that counts, not the price of the item.

History / SLAVIA - Foundation for Polish history and culture [3]

Crow,

I have just come across this post by you and think this link is wonderful.
I plan to visit this place when I go to Poland next year.
I love the beautiful Illuminated manuscript and calligraphy on the site. One of my greatest joys was to see the _Book Of Kells_ when I went to Ireland a few years back

One other question... I like your new avater, where is this from and what is its symbolism, please?

I guess I've been out of Jersey for too long!

Travel / The best holiday destination in Poland? [34]

Quoting: Amathyst
But there is so much to Poland it seems a waste to just stay in one place for a whole month.
Americans....

Please don't assume we all fit into this mold. I can't wait for my trip to Poland, and want to go to as many places as I can, and see as much as I can! I want to see the art, the history, the people, the countryside, the cities, the museums, etc.,etc......

Yes, but your comment did seem to put all of US into the same group. I was just trying to clarify that we all don't fit into this profile. This does not represent me as an American.

USA, Canada / Polonia in USA - Happy 4th of July! [42]

There's nothing like a good old Fourth of July Parade down Mainstreet! The old cars, the Boy and Girl Scouts, the HS bands, the American Veterans. the clowns, the floats, the little kids on bicycles,.... hokey, but wouldn't be a Fourth without one!!!

Happy Independance Day everyone!!

The only problem is it was outdoors.

How hot was it? It was 102 here in the SF Bay area. Fortunately we don't have high humidity! It's supposed to get cooler on Friday.
