Language / What do you find difficult about learning Polish? [98]

The way we say things in English doesn't seem to be the correct way to say them in Polish. Example, I say "I'm fine." in English. If I were to translate this into Polish, I would think it would be "Jestem dobrze." But NO. I would say "Czuje sie dobrze." or "I feel fine." I never say that, lol! It just sounds weird.

BTW, can anyone tell me how to pronounce 'czuje'? (Or even if that's the right spelling.) :)

Life / Holiday's in Poland! Not allowed thanksgiving off. [30]

Neither is Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day

Actually the US Veterans Day is the same day as Polish Independence Day, so technically that day is a holiday. This is what my Polish friend told me, so I believe him.

Language / The best way for me to learn Polish [89]

Apr 12, 09, 09:03 - Thread attached on merging:
Best way to learn Polish?

It seems to me that it would be easier to learn any new language like children do - from abc's and basic words, then build your vocabulary and grammar from there.

But it seems most people want to start with learning typical adult words/phrases and building the rest of their language around that. This seems harder to me, but I have only been trying to learn for a few weeks.

For native English speakers learning Polish, what have you found to be the best way for you to learn? Any techniques or tricks you employed?

Language / The best way for me to learn Polish [89]

I bought a program called "Rosetta Stone" to learn Polish.

This looks like a really awesome program. But $550? Wow. A little steep for me.

Language / What do you find difficult about learning Polish? [98]

Actually, to the question 'Jak się masz?'/'Jak się Pan(i) ma (miewa)?', for example, the best answer is often simply 'Dobrze!', short and simple!

Yes, good point. I was thinking about speaking through email, since that is really the only way I have to converse in Polish. But actually speaking, you are correct. I will remember that. :)

Language / The best way for me to learn Polish [89]

I would say take college classes I know they teach Polish and if you have Polish friends ask them to help you.

I would LOVE to take a class, but unfortunately, I am from a small US city, so there are no classes offered here. And our Polish population = 0. I have one Polish friend who lives in Warsaw and exchange emails with him about once a week. But he's not the best instructor, lol!

Language / BYKI for Polish [10]

I've used the BYKI Free Edition to start learning Polish, and have learned all the lessons available, including all the ones I can download. I'm thinking about upgrading to the paid BYKI, but want others' opinions first.

Is there alot more lists to learn, or just a few extra? It says "up to" 75 more lists, but that can be misleading. I don't want to waste $50 if it's just another 15.

Does it actually teach you the language, or just more taxi and hotel phrases?

Learn Polish! (also from Transparent Language) is only like another $20 and seems to have alot more. Maybe this would be better to get? It looks like I wouldn't be able to just spend $20 for the upgrade from BYKI Plus to Learn Polish!, but would have to pay the full amount. If that's the case, maybe I should get skip BYKI Plus and get Learn Polish!.

Or does someone else know of a better program. I really like the way BYKI Free teaches and would prefer to use a program with a similar teaching method.

Dziękuję!

Language / BYKI for Polish [10]

Thanks, Davey. You bring up a good point and another question. I have thought about getting a Polish language textbook, but never could find one that looked very good. Anyone know of any good ones?

Language / BYKI for Polish [10]

Thanks! Know where I could buy a copy? Google only returns 4 hits for "Cześć, jak się masz?:Spotkamy się w Polsce", none of them with the ability to purchase. :(

LOL! Good to know. Funny, I actually did find an error in one of their lessons (they had chciałbym and chciałabym backwards).

Language / mógłby / mogłaby - A question of gender [3]

If someone could clarify this for me please.

Example, the phrase:
Czy pan mógłby mnie zawieźć do... (whereever).

Ok, I know mógłby (mogłaby) changes with gender, but whose gender? Mine or the person I'm asking? I think it's the person I'm asking, but want to make sure.

Dziękuję!

Language / adding się [21]

According to poltran.com,

Spotkamy means "We will meet"

Spotkamy się means "We will face each other"

I'm sure adding the się is probably a grammar thing, but I'm a bit confused as to what it's supposed to do. It looks like both sentences are future tense, so what exactly is it's purpose?

Language / adding się [21]

Spotkamy means we will see somebody

Somebody in particular (him, her) just not the person I'm talking to, right?

News / Peculiar opinions about Poland [33]

Everytime someone finds out I'm learning Polish, they always ask why. I've had one person say "Aren't they communist over there?" I love trying to learn Polish history too, so I can tell people about it when they ask why I'm learning the language. :-)

It happens in writing too. When I email my Polish friends, I noticed I write the same way they do. I always have to go back and fix my email, lol!

What's hard? Grammar/sentence structure, different word endings, the szcz sound

I love the whole language. It's very mysterious and beautiful.

Language / Kupić - Kupować [17]

What is the difference? Both mean "to buy", right? Is there a certain rule to know when to use each?

Love / Difficult Polish girlfriend - how long would you put up with her? My story. [68]

she told me that she could "easily get a rich model tomorrow, if I wanted to... whereas YOU can't".

Oh really? Well, if she really thinks she can get someone soooooo much better than you, tell her... as my Grandma used to say... "don't let the door hit ya in the @$$ on the way out."
