Life / Belgian moving to Krakow, need practical info [38]

Hi All,

Let me introduce myself, I am 26 yrs old and will move to Krakow in September this year. I used to work in Ireland and am now working & living back in Belgium for 2 years, but I want this feeling of "adventure" again, so I decided to take up a job in Krakow. Is there any advice you can give me? Like should I bring a car, are flats furnished and easy to find, is Krakow a nice place to live, which are the best areas to go live etc...

Basicaly any practical info would be more then welcome :)

Thanks in advance!

Śródmieście, Krowodrza...

welcome and have fun...

Thanks! I would be going to work for IBM so would prefer to live in the neighbourhood there!

So I'll sell my car and buy a fiat 126p instead? ;-)

I currently have a Volkswagen bora sportline from 2005, so best not to take that one? Maybe I could sell it here, buy an older volkswagen golf and take it, or something like that...

Also, can I drive with Belgian plates there?

I'll put it this way if you survived Ireland you'll survive here, lol, I'm Irish.

Hehe, thanks Sean, also for the welcoming!
I lived in Dublin not far away from Finglas and after that close to Corduff, so I did survive, or was just lucky :)

Do you live in Krakow too? Or the region? What made you move to Poland?

Kind regards

Alternatively, we can find you something else if you get in touch and let us know your criteria

Ideal would be close to IBM a 3-bedroom flat with a garage or parking space, since we will probably share it with 2 other people...

I wouldn't mind sharing at all...
Told my parents yesterday the decision was final and they did not support it at all and told me it was a bad idea etc... An extra thing to get over :)

Food / Żubrówka + apple juice anyone? [41]

Żubrówka is an 'emergency' drink at my house ;) if there is nothing else, ...

I think Zubrówka is the best! I love it mixed with orange juice, hmmmm...
Or with red bull it's not bad either!

Another question I had, where somebody can maybe help me with:

If I bring my car:

- Do I need to register it to Polish plates?
- If yes, howlong can I drive with my Belgian plates?
- Do I have to insure it in Poland?
- Howmuch are insurances in Poland (1.9 TDI engine)

Thanks!

Real Estate / Is it normal that property companies ask you for a payment for services? [9]

Hi,

I found quite a nice place in the Krakow area, the rent is 1950pln a month + bills.
It's a real estate company who is renting it ou for an owner abroad.
The company says they want a 2300zl commission when I would take the flat.
On top of that, they would want one months rent as caution (which is normal).
But 2300zl for just renting out a place seems quite a lot, since they are just the person "in between" the owner & you, so I wonder if it's normal/common/accepted that these "commissions" are asked upon a let agreement.

Kind regards and thanks!

I agree it sounds like a total scam, but as a foreigner, it's hard to find the real owners since most of them rent it through a agency.

I just think that their commission is even higher then the rent!

Plus on top of that they want a caution as high as the rent, and what if you decide to move after a few months, u have to pay them again when there is an agency involved?

Thanks already!

So from all I can read here you would all strongly discourage the usage of agents when renting a property?
As a foreigner, it is hard to find it without an agency since I don't understand most of the ads in the first place...

But if I can save 2300zl, then I sure will try!
Btw, do they give you an official invoice and receipt for that 2300zl too?

Life / A lot of "How safe is Poland" threads? [15]

Danny, I am moving there too so I'm taking the same bet as you are, but I think since Krakow is very touristic, I'm assuming as well it might be safe, or so I hope ;)

Life / Is Ritalin available in Poland? [22]

Hi, I would like to know if the medication Ritalin (Methylphenidate) is prescribed in Poland (not all countries allow it).

I kind of had the same question about a medicin, lexotan (lexotanil in some countries), some countries classify it as a drug even....
Also fluoxetin I have the same question about...
So if anyone could help, it would be highly appreciated!

Law / Polish Car Inspection & Registering car [6]

Hi friends!

As you know, I'll be moving to Poland end of next month, but will bring my car too.
I will be driving these plates for 6 months but after that I need to get Polish ones.

So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with "importing" a car, like do I have to pass Polish car inspection, and if so, what do they look after, what is important? Because here NCT is very strict but I was wondering how it worked in Poland.

Anyone who could give me any advice or help would be highly appreciated ;)

Grtz.

Nobody at all? :-)

Real Estate / Letting agencies Krakow [11]

Hi Krakowlet,

I am looking for an apartment in Krakow to rent without involving an agency to cut on expenses, I am working as a professional, you can always contact me through sending a PM here or email durseyrow at yahoo dot fr.

Thanks in advance!

and they charge a pretty penny in finding fees as well ... :)

That is so true!!! U pay for nothing :)

I mean, it's not logical, in every other country bussinesses would be happy to get customers, but in this case, the customer has to pay a bussiness to become a client?

It just doesn't make sense! If they charge the owner, okay, since he wants to rent it out, but the tenant just wants to rent a place, the property company should be happy they found someone instead of asking them for a month's rent or more for basically just waiting for them to call... easy money it seems, and a big sceam :)

Real Estate / Letting agencies Krakow [11]

Those letting agencies are just scams.

Like I said... :)

and deal with the tenants on your own.

Quite hard if you don't speak any Polish, also because none of the sites like gumtree are available in English...

Work / Access to Live in Poland to raise my son [13]

Just moved to the states having a Diversity Visa. got it now ?

I feel so bad for that woman, men like you give all men a bad name...
Just stay away from Poland and give that woman the reason to rebuild a normal life, I think after all this, she has had enough trauma already...

Life / Well You visited and/or lived in Poland, tell us what its like. [41]

Ok, I have never been to Poland.
I have never lived there either but I am moving there in less then one month to live.
So all posts here are quite useful for me too, thank you!
The Polish people I met here or in Dublin are all very nice people, always helpful, always in for a good laugh and that's als why I chose Poland to go and live.

It's not the most "common" place for Western people to go live, but it's a challenge, and in the end, isn't that what life's all about? I rather regret the things I do then the things I didn't :-)

So bring it on, I am ready :)
