Life / Present for Polish friends ~ is anything hard to get any more? [57]

My cousin who communicats with Canada recently recieved a bottle of maple syrup from them. His mom told me they loved it and put it on kluski (not what I would ever do but to each his own) So maybe a bottle from Vermont or New England States. I also collect T-shirts so would like one from anywhere and everyone knows one never has enough...right??? I remember sending my cousin one for the Utah Jazz as he loves them. (never heard of them but found it on line and had it mailed over to him) Ooops just read you are from UK so the maple syrup does not apply but I think they have somemade in Scotland.

lacking in Pocky

What are Pocky????

If one doesn't have a voice in their country of birth then where do they have a voice?

I would assume where ever they live and vote. I was born in Germany. Came to the US when I was 3. Am a citizen here in the US so I would believe my voice would be here not in Germany or Poland where my parents and family are from. I think your question doesn't always apply to country of birth. Everyone feels differently of who they are. That comes from inside.

Love / Polish men vs German men: Who is hotter? [513]

Give me an Italian hunk anyday. They are the hottest. I do think a German would win over a Polish guy. (except for my brothers who are two Polish hunks but then they were born here and not being partial either cause they are my brothers) And of course there is Franek....very handsome!!!!! and quite the charmer.

Language / Any sweet Polish phrases [255]

Isn't pimpek something to do with a belly button. Seem I use to hear that with small babies. Otherwise in American English all I hear in "pimp" which is not a nice thing to be called as an endearment or otherwise.

I have only heard the word misiu used recently and I thought at first they were saying mouse. Aren't the words similar in sound in Polish maybe not spelled same though.

News / is o2.pl only for poland emails? [21]

try sending the person you recieved an email from by hitting reply. If you received it is should go back with the same address then just check your sent detail. If you started a new email are you sure you did not mispell the address.Or your mail may be winding up in his/her spam folder. Could also be filter. I send emails to my cousin and it always comes back as not being able to be delivered. She is @wp.pl but if I send her brother an email to his job it is not a problem. Check with your ISP to find out why some are blocked or rather they should.

USA, Canada / Do most polish people want to stay in the US? [17]

My parents were born in Poland. I was born in Germany came here when I was 3 so I have no plans on ever going back to Poland / Germany except to visit. (which I have to both) This is my home to me and the best on this planet no matter what is said (and even I complain with the rest of the best)

USA, Canada / Canadian moving to Poland...any advice? [30]

Four years old. Children are more resilient than adults so I think your child will pick up the language fast and acclimate to new surroundings and life. I came to USA when 3 and don't ever remember having a problem with an adjustment. Course that was many moons ago too. :P

Genealogy / Clarification - where is "Hacrowie"? [9]

Hacrowie...........this is what was written for my dad's birthplace. Any idea where this is. Is it a form of writing the city Kracow? Any insight into this will be helpful. If its not Kracow then would any one know where it might be. The only thing I can find in Google is "2 zlote Hacrowie" in Worldcoins.

Thanks!!!!!

Genealogy / Clarification - where is "Hacrowie"? [9]

Not so fast. Obviously you give up to easily and if you rely strictly on Google you are in deep doodoo!!! It may not be in English but it maybe in another form on a Polish site...one I haven't found yet. Sherlock Holmes you ain't but thanks for answering.

Genealogy / Clarification - where is "Hacrowie"? [9]

It was written on his marriage certificate. I know there is English way of spelling and the Polish way of spelling so was wondering if this is where this came from. I want to start a geneology tree for our family but need correct spelling to start with. For some reason Poles believe innaming everyhting twice ????? go figure...My mom was born in Spytkowice and there are two. Who would know the difference unless they live in Poland.

It could be Krakow. When they asked him where he was born he maybe said said "w Krakowie"

You have a point except that when I saw the exact spelling on Google that was on the certificate it led me to believe that there might be an actual Hacrowie. (Unless they copied the Polish spelling) Or maybe since it is just the spelling thing that is why nothing is found in Google for this.

Food / Polish plum cake [4]

If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space

Here is my recipe:

Placek (Plum Cake)

3 Cups flour
2 sticks butter
1 Cup sugar
5 eggs yolks (save whites for 2nd step)
1 Tsp Baking powder
1 tsp Cocoa
Italian plums (enough to cover a 13x9 inch pan) about 2 lbs halved & pitted

Mix (knead) and divide into 3 equal parts

1st add cocoa (about 1 tsp) to one of the 3 parts you just divided. Leave in refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours. Take one ball and pat into pan add the fruit (Italian plums divided into two is best)Just lay them side by side till whole pan is covered (I used a 13x9 in pan) You may also use sliced apples as the plumes are usually in season in the fall. Next take 2nd ball and crumble on top of the plumes. Beat 5 egg whites, stiff, add 1/2 Cup sugar. Pour over the fruit.

Take 3rd ball (cocoa) and crumble last evenly over the mixture. Bake at 350 for about 25 to 30 minutes.

This was served to me when I was visiting Poland and my cousin gave me her recipe.

Food / Polish romantic dinner (suggestions)? [30]

Yes and to think that they keep fish in the bathtub and then eat it. I would never eat anything coming from the bathroom. (reminds me of an old Seinfield episode)

Food / Bread ball soup? I know it sounds strange... [13]

The Germans make a beef broth from just a round bone with marrow and use bread dumplings. I had some when in Germany and it was very tasty. I do not know if the Poles have a similar one.
