Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]
i dont see that as a bad thing - it's a just a custom, and a quaint custom at that. I for one am kind of sick of everything becoming too causual and sloppy.
yeah Polish people whine a lot. I think it has somethign to do with communism and the fact that everyone is still used ot getting something for nothing from the government - BUT YET whatever they get (got) from the state was always crap anyways so they complained about it. hopefully after a few more generations of democracy and capitalism this will begin to dissappear.
"2. The food. The meat and vegetables are really tasty. I didn't know how good a cucumber or tomato could taste until I went to Poland."
I KNOW. Lol maybe that's why I'm one of the few people I know who actually LIKE vegatables - without needing to put tons of fattening crap on them to make them taste good!
southern, wow that description of Poland was quite.... intense. I've never been to Auchswitz so I can't say anything about that but that's so cool how the atmosphere has affected you so deeply. very interesting! love it!

Life / "Old" Polish people - are they doomed to lead inactive lives? [7]
well it depends. its all in the attitude you now. my grandfather has good retirement benefits and a free apartment (my mother's) so he has enough money and time. He just complains and lies in bed and watches TV. You don't always have to have money to engage in extra-curricular activities. There is so much to do - join veteran's clubs, volunteer, help the poor, pass on knowledge and experience to younger generations, be social... etc etc etc. But it's much easier to sit at home and watch tv.
BUT my great aunt who was frail and in her 80's when she died was one of the most active and intellectual sober people I have ever met. It jsut depends on your attitude and your willingness to stay current and acive and present in your life.

Pros:
1.The language
2. all the old buildings, historical sites
3. The fightin' side of the Poles
4. Their AMAZING restoration skills
5. some of the food
6. the beer. I couldnt stand beer untill I had some in Poland
7. the landscapes
8. Kazimierz Dolny
9. The humor
10. oldies music, like Czerwone Gitary, etc
11. the hospitality, once they get to know you
12. traditional arts and crafts, clothes
13. I don't know.... just this atmosphere... especially in artistic/intellectual circles
Cons:
1. soviet buildings
2. remaining communist attitudes and mentality
3. the grass is always greener on the other side attitude
4. the ******** and moaning and everyday rudeness
5. buerocracy (sp?)

I say this without any antagonism towards you and with complete somberness and gravity. It just saddens me. When I see people like you, it makes me wonder if the Poles aren't their own worst enemies. Why the intense hatred? Parasites? Are you serious?? You ought to be DEEPLY ashamed. If you consider the new immigrants are parasites, then what do you think of yourself and your parents?
