Language / Basic words to say to a Polish girl? [40]
When I moved From Poland to Florida I knew VERY little English and was not used to hearing it with an American accent. I went straight into ninth grade. Math was a piece of cake. Geography was not too bad because the names of places were somewhat similar. For history and science classes I did lots of vocabulary memorization and I answered questions by copying full paragraph on each topic from my text books. My teqachers were okay with that. My first semester i failed English only. Went to summer school and frm then on had no problems. The best thing I ever did was memorize over 100 irregular verbs on three tenses (ex. know, knew, known), which improved my English a lot. The hardest thing was other students making fun of my accent, my clothes, my hair... No teacher ever stood up for me. I graduated with a 3.5 GPA and the rest is history. So my advice to you as a teacher is to be patient and supportive and PLEASE do not try to send this child to another school. They tried to do that to me. I'm glad my dad stood his ground and I stayed in that school because I don't think I would have received as good of an education in another school.

Life / "Old" Polish people - are they doomed to lead inactive lives? [7]

Please remember that the generation in Poland that are now in their 50's and 60's was born right after World War II and have had real hard lives. I think our generation (their children) and the ones after us will have more of a chance to actually enjoy their lives and retirement. Also, many of them are still not retired because they simply cannot afford to do so. I'm sure if the money and free time existed they would do much more than "just sit on the couch and watch TV". A lot of them are just simply trying to survive.

Solomea is a russian name not polish as far as I can tell.
Salomea us a polish version of Salome which came from an Aramaic word related to the jewish word shalom which means peace. I hope this helps.

Food / what kind of sauce should I make for my gołąbki? [63]
I add plain tomato sauce (not spaghetti sauce), a little water and cut up raw bacon right into the same pot that the cabbage rolls cook in. By the time they are done the pot is full of sauce that tastes like cabbage, tomatoes and bacon. Delicious! I put salt inside of the cabbage rolls but not into the sauce because the bacon is salty enough.
Some people take a short cut and use condensed tomato soup and water but that taste too sweet to me and the pot tends to burn on the bottom because of the sugar that's in the soup.

I've never given intonation much thought but I think for most people putting the accent on the correct syllable is very hard.

I put them in the oven mixed with olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, parmesan and italian bread crumbs. I bake it at 400F until golden brown. DELICIOUS! In Poland we ate them the way we ate cauliflower or green beens, steamed and then covered with bread crumbs and butter.

Food / Looking for recipe w/ Hard boiled eggs [4]
It's called "jajka po tatarsku" or "eggs tartar". I don't have the exact recipe but I think you just mix equal parts of mayo and sour cream, finely minced onions and cornishons (little pickles) pepper and salt (not too much salt since mayo is already salty). You may also add pickled mushrooms or peas. Cut hard boiled eggs in half, pour the tartar sauce on them and sprinkle the whole dish with sweet paprika. If you want it to be more creamy, mix one part mayo to two parts sour cream. Enjoy!

Do you mean "kwas"? Then it's bialy zurek that you want, it has kwas (acid) in it. Kwas is made by fermenting grain. It gives the soup a great sour taste. We put sausage and potatoes in our zurek.
