UK, Ireland / Any poles here who live in north west of England ? [49]

I don't know why, but strong Polish accents learning English with the word 'Mate' sounding more like the word 'Might'
sounds a bit out of place. However, here in ************* it sounds perfectly normal for the locals.
On the other hand, everyone has to be able to pronounce the common gretting 'Alright?' as a very brief 'awoi!'.

Well, I heard that Scots and Irish get on quite well, so...

It really depends on various factors.
Enough Irish don't get on with other Irish, Scots the same, ditto the English.
North and South Welsh aren't always best of friends.
Otherwise, in Britain, we're like one big happy family.

There are loads of brilliant and beautiful accents across the British Isles.
Even the West Midlands doesn't always sound hideous!

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

Scottish people

Start a new thread for that.
Then another for the Welsh,
another for the Northern Irish, the Cornish, Manx, Channel Islanders...

1% of the population

Or even less.
Some former flatmates of my brother's in Ireland went to Prague for a big drinking session.
By all accounts they'd have been better off staying in Cork.

Does the average Brit know enough about Poland to have an

That's why I said most are indifferent.

Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

Brains expand to fit the knowledge they contain. If it is clear which language is to be spoken to whom and when, then children speaking more than one language works. I did hear something on the radio (BBC Radio 4 - Home Truths) a couple of years ago about a family where all the father's conversations with the children were in German, despite the fact they were English. Because all conversations were in German, they were never confused as to whether to use English or German. He spoke to his wife in English. I can't remember clearly, but I think the mother spoke to them in French.

Urmmm....Yes i'm sure thats really what happened Osiol!!....and you think the English have such a high opinion of the Poles that they all go rushing up to them every time they open their mouths??....Dream on dude!!

It was a fairly unexpected thing to have happened, but it did.
I have also been to Poland and met people in pubs who were keen to practice their English. This was not in a big city. There was no stag party.

I might add that one was a woman who used to go out with a Polish man. Another was a man who had worked in Czech and had visited Poland on a few occasions.

Most English people seem to be fairly indifferent to Poles. There are a few who are xenophobic - they are probably xenophobic in the direction of any nationality. There are also some people who have a real admiration or at least some interest in Poland and the Polish.

If I want to make up a story, I'd be writing novels, not posting bullsh1t on a forum. I leave that to other people.

If I spoke English in your home town in Poland

Crikey! I've now got a home town in Poland. Which one is it?

Life / Opinions about Radio Maryja [134]

The exact central point in Europe is somewhere in the middle of Poland.
This means Poland is in northern, southern, eastern and western Europe all at the same time.
Unless you want to call it central Europe.

It does depend on what subject is being discussed as to whether any given country is in eastern, western...

UK, Ireland / Polish Thoughts on Britain and the British [273]

Last night, three of us went into a Hertford pub. Two of us English, one Polish. It wasn't a great pub - just a few old blokes, no music. We were on a bit of a pub crawl, so we thought we'd have one pint then go. After a few minutes, word of a Polish man amongst us became known and suddenly there were about three different people talking to him in Polish. They were all English, but each had their own bizarre reasons for knowing some of the language. None of them spoke very good Polish, but what a warm welcome to an otherwise dull public house!

News / Roman Giertych.... a right-wing politician from Poland [90]

It was me in Wyspianska's dream. I crept off in the night, entered her dreamscape and moved all the furniture round when she wasn't looking. Then there was an interesting Lady Godiva moment that I won't say any more about. Not here anyway. The only uniform I remember seeing was on a slightly startled traffic warden.

It depends on what the donkey was doing.
I'm not sure what Freud would have said,
but he usually claimed anything in dreams are something to do with sex.
You weren't wearing a uniform in this dream, were you?

Aren't donkeys vegetarians anyway

Not this one.

estragon

The only one off the last list I can't guess.
It doesn't look like the name of a spice to my simple eyes,
but in no way does that mean I don't believe you!

Life / How much do you HATE POLISH PEOPLE and POLAND [1260]

Phillybob1982

There are laws against ageism. It seems suprising that a college can deny training on the basis of age.

Your posts have sounded very negative. Being positive, despite how bad things might be, is the best way of getting somewhere.
Nothing is to be gained from compaining about other people and forces beyond your control.
Do something about your own situation before you moan about others making the most of what is available to them.

Keep trying to get a job - you will get there. You must leave negativity behind.

krokiety

Crock yeti - a blend of crocodile and yeti - I'm just off to find a yeti.
It looks like that's what I was thinking of (the actual food product, not the product of my bizarre imagination).

To the working classes

Count me as an example.

'go to school get a degree'

There's far more to training than a degree. A degree is not a very good example of training.
There are short-term courses in just about anything.
Local colleges do loads of stuff, including evening classes.

Food / Some cooking spices in Polish [46]

At the moment, there was a sort of savoury pancake thing I can think of that was very good.
There was a green soup served with a big pile of slightly crispy mashed potato is the middle of the table,
and this, I think:

parzybroda is Cabbage soup with milk

There was more that I can't specifically remember.
I just remember that I didn't taste anything I didn't enjoy.

It takes up a lot of my time and keeps me out of mischief!
When I say I want recipes, I always Osiolise everything,
so give me an Italian recipe, it will end up tasting unmistakably (to me) like something of my own.
Some of the things I ate in Poland but never learnt the names for would be good.
