Well, you've got a point here to a degree. A lot of rednecks in the US are like that.

Video of the turkey killings was a little over the top but hunting has always been around and is typically heavily regulated. You can't go after endangered species, etc. Hunting deer keeps the population under control so they don't wander on the highways and kill themselves and people. Nothing like hitting a 250 pd deer when you're doing 70 mph in little Honda or something. It will ruin your day, no doubt about it.

I don't hunt, never will do it but I respect the tradition of it and those who do it responsibly. Most hunters I know do actually eat their kill.

It's premature to say it was all for "nothing". You expect some quick quid pro quo in international relations? This would be strange as the US sure as hell did not receive that kind of quick turn around on investment from Germany some years back and still have to PAY just to have goddamn bases on the soil. Probaby these bases kept your continent from tearing each other's faces off long enough to form the EU in the first place. Maybe that's one thing the US has indirectly done for Poland. The arms race which more or less bankrupted the Soviets is another.

Also, the US didn't exactly ask for compensation when it sent 20,000 into Bosnia (a worse war than Iraq or Afghanistan).

Poles want compensation for the 2500 troops given to us.. they only need to ask. I have not heard any demands from their side.

I'm sorry for your loss, man. My old literature professor, Kloesel from Bonn. His dad died out there too. I could tell it bothered him even though he was an old guy and joked around most of the time.

When you grow up in the States, you don't get to hear eyewitness accounts from the other side like that and of course Hollywood only glorifys the Western Front.

This BBC doc isn't super fancy production.. it's just brutually honest and thorough in my opinion. Yeah it was barbarism mostly but that's what these guys had thrust upon them to a degree.

You should.. that Eastern Front was the goddamn real deal. Made me forget about D-Day / Bulge I can tell you that much. These old guys are like "hey it was war, we did what we had to do". Best documentary I've ever seen.. watched it several times. The best is when they interview these old German / Russian soldiers. British filmakers kind of try and shame them and these old guys dont apologize for a damn thing either. Despite all the atrocities, I couldn't help but respect the hell out of these old soldiers.
