UK, Ireland / WHAT AREAS IN LONDON ARE POPULAR FOR POLISH PEOPLE TO LIVE IN? [33]

I don't know about how many Polish people there are there,
but a couple of years ago, I knew a Polish chap who seemed to have his eye on
St. John's Wood.

We all dream.

Footnote: St. John's Wood has the only London Underground station whose name includes none of the letters found in the word 'Mackerel'.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

Janey

But you know that you are a far better person for being open-minded.
Petty, bigoted people miss out on so many of the pleasures in life through their ignorance and pessimism.
I'm just glad the same thing didn't happen where I work.

UK, Ireland / Need flat for 2 weeks in Edinburgh [32]

staying in a Hostel

I stayed in a hostel in Edinburgh once. It had a late night bar, which was kind of good.
The next morning it reeked of stale cigarettes and spilt drinks.
There's one place I welcome the smoking ban.
I don't remember much of the experience, but it wasn't too expensive, I vaguely recall.
Great place to visit though.

Life / Redheads in Poland - How many? [95]

Just to return to something Beckski mentioned on page 1:

What about the dying of hair to have a reddish tinge?
I'm not neccesarily talking about accidents with dye resulting in gingerness!
I'll save blonde/dark/pink/blue/green dyed hair for another occasion.

Love / how do you tell a polish guy he's sexy?? [54]

szarlotka

Isn't scarlotka a kind of tart?
No offence meant.

i don't like a cake.

Carrot-cake comes to mind.
No offence meant!
I won't decribe you as any kind of cake then.

Surely anything positive can be used as a compliment.
It just has to be to or about an appropriate person.
Cake is good. Not everyone wants to be described as a cake.

News / Poland 2007 Elections: PO Won, PIS second [232]

The huge majority of people cannot afford to fly home on a whim

True. My Polish flatmate gets one trip back a year.

To stay on topic, he claims to have absolutely no interest in the election results.
I was more interested than he was and I'm not even Polish. I just care about the whole world.
Having said that, he's not a fan of the twins.

I'm hungry...

... about carrots... or at least hair the colour of carrots.

Life / Redheads in Poland - How many? [95]

10% redheads in PL

I reckon less. If Scotland traditionally has or had one of the highest proportions of redheads in the world, and this in the 1950s averaged at about 10%, and southern England only about 5%, Poland ought to have less. Probably.

The other alternative is that British redheads are more fiery and they go for the stand up and be counted option!

I don't believe in the fiery redhead thing - I've known fiery people of various other hair-colours. Brunettes dyed pink seem to be the most extreme from my experience!

source of info: Reader's Digest Atlas of Britain, 1965, and from my own experience/brain.

Life / Redheads in Poland - How many? [95]

A rare opportunity here - my flatmate is actually awake.
Two of his mates back home have ginger hair.
In his town he has seen at least two others.
One, however, he has described as Kasztan.

What's the count so far?

Life / Redheads in Poland - How many? [95]

I'm not looking for an exact number.
Red / ginger hair is found all over Europe to varying degrees.

It is probably most common in Ireland.
It is also surprisingly common in Udmurtia (never heard of it?)

The important questions here are:
Are you Polish and ginger?
Do you know anyone who is?

No squabbling please.

UK, Ireland / Gullible pretty polish girls with immigrants in Ireland [60]

No, but I've been there many times. I have friends there, and I once had a job interview in that fine town.
I decided to walk, I got completely lost, and at one point I had to scramble down a steep slope thick with Hawthorns, only to find myself in a field with horses in it.

I did get the job.

The cows moved. I think they're now somewhere near Bancroft. Or is it Stacey Bushes?

News / to buy or not to buy a polish keyboard ? [11]

I taught M*******t Word some simple keyboard shortcuts to do the letters with symbols.
If I feel the need to use them, I just use Word, then cut and paste.

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

My family history had been researched meticulously by my mother. It was her hobby for many years. Unlike a neighbour who was also doing similar research, she was not looking for some kind of noble connection!

There can be a lot of names and a lot of dates, but it's only when you think about the times your ancestors lived in, you begin to see more of a picture. But the truth is, the reality of the past is unobtainable. All too often, our stories die when we die. Those stories aren't always true either.

Somewhere, all her good work is to be found, but it's not an easy thing to just go and find it, then try to take it all in.

News / The Maluch Car [34]

My mother had a Fiat 126 many years ago. We called it the motorised rollerskate.
It is possible that wearing one rollerskate on a busy road is just as safe.

UK, Ireland / teach me polish in the norwich or norfolk pub please :o) [12]

There are all kinds of bizarre places you can learn Polish.
At work is my favourite.
The boss hears me attempting to speak the language with my Polish colleagues and thinks
"That's great - he'll be able to get the best out of them, explaining the work better. Good team building!'
He doesn't know the majority of what I'm saying is swear-words and derogatory comments. There's some talk relevant to work though too.

Learn Polish in a pub and you'll learn plenty about ordering drinks, I imagine.
Very useful for a holiday.
