Life / Are Polish people civilised or not? My thoughts... [52]

Trust me, it's what I call the park bench mentality. We have many such people in Scotland.

Well, he may be one of those on his way to Chorzów for that footie match. I wouldn't mind going, it's just along the road from Gliwice. I've often worked in Katowice and Chorzów is even closer. We'll see some uncivilised people on both sides. God help those NI fans that come. One of my students knows some in the hooligan fraternity and their plans aren't classic Polish hospitality, let's say that much.

I just pray that the innocent families that come here aren't set upon. Chorzów is home to some of the worst, if not the worst, fans in Poland. NOT civilised people, they give other Poles a bad name.

UK, Ireland / How can I receive child support from a Polish man living in UK? [33]

This is highly specialised stuff, Lir. I haven't kept in touch with such provisions. Teaching is a broad church. Being a lawyer means being sure of risk being caught out for giving bad advice. That's not the life I want to live.

Study / Celta - Application Form [24]

Canada is part of Saudi Arabia now? ;)

Skinny is a little pejorative, slim is positive.

He stopped to smoke means he was doing something else like driving a truck, then he needed a cigarette so he stopped. Why? To smoke a cigarette.

He stopped smoking, asides from quitting, means that he was doing this but his boss was in the area so he had to stub it out and move on. Hence, he stopped what he was doing.

I'm bored to death with the conditionals. I have to teach at 7 but I'll easily help you with them if you want.

Study / Celta - Application Form [24]

I teach the first point a fair bit in my school. Quite easy for me but tricky for them.

The second point I can do in my sleep

The third one is often used as we see the words as the same but they are not.

The fourth one, a cap is a type of hat. For example, we don't say a Cossack cap.

I'd happily demonstrate them for you but I don't believe in online teaching that much. Easy stuff though.

Life / Thunderstorms in Poland [44]

Perhaps a little. A Japanese doctor said I was and a Scottish doctor said I wasn't.

Food / Wroclaw has an Indian Restaurant [34]

I've had 2 things sent to me by PF members. I extend my gratitude to them. There's not much hope of that here, though. Yes, Seanus, your dansak is in the post. Hmm...

There was an Indian joint here but the Poles are not major fans of curry like the Scots are. I've had most types in my time. I had an Indian friend so I was able to sample food from his restaurant.

Pasanda is super too.

Life / Are Polish people civilised or not? My thoughts... [52]

I saw 3 guys do a funny thing today. They ordered 3 beers but maybe decided that 3 was too many. So the guy went back inside with 2 of them and returned to his table. Some 3 mins later, the waiter came out with a scabby old 2l coke bottle full of beer. They had filtered this beer into an old bottle, hmm....

It just appeared like an alcoholic's stunt.

News / The Polish-Hungarian friendship is as well as poisoned [45]

And look how cretins like Kwaśniewski and Tusk pay you back. Are you a member of any Serbo-Polish society, Crow? I'm sure such a thing exists.

Do you like Magyars, generally? They are very enigmatic people, weird skin but with great aspects to their culture. Chess and goulash are 2 thinks I like from Hungary, there are more.

Life / Thunderstorms in Poland [44]

The latest one is upon us. It's as stuffy as hell, breathing is awkward.

It's not that hard, really. You just need to get an interview, competition is quite fierce in some places. Then, you have to demonstrate something, just to show how you explain a topic to an audience. It's not that bad really.

Life / Opinions/experience about the Polish Police [40]

They can be provocative at football matches, perhaps acting out of fear. I wouldn't have liked to have been a police officer at the Lech Poznań Vs Ruch Chorzów match :(

Language / Why do you have this weird grammar with y and i? optYka? magazYn? zYsk? why? [30]

It goes a lot deeper than that. Professor Miodek wrangled over this one for quite a while. Technically, nie ma przystanka is actually correct although most people say nie ma przystanku. There was an interesting thread on it some time back. Most of the Poles disagreed with me that nie ma przystanka was valid but polishgirl tx found me to be correct.

A couple of light-hearted, funny videos. Actually, I've seen more people stotting home in Scotland than Poland as a result of cheap vodka.

I agree with WB, you have to fight for things here so why fight when you can get it easily abroad?

Life / Are Polish people civilised or not? My thoughts... [52]

PC is right, I've heard horror stories about the Brits who come across to abuse Krakow by committing all sorts of sins. Far from civilised. I mean, we've all gotten a little drunk and done silly things but they are purely obnoxious.

I'd guess that most Poles enjoy a few tinnies with their mates at home after work. The ones in the UK, that is. Nowt wrong with that of course.

This is not noimmi posting, Freddy. I'm quite sure about that.

History / World War II - a tragic story for Poland and the World [489]

Krysia is right, APU. I hear some people now saying, 'we cannot forget the past incase we repeat it'. Oh, how virtuous! :( We have allowed numerous international catastrophes since WWII so they can't play the righteous card.

Vietnam, Rwanda and Bosnia spring to mind.

I'm aware of that, thanks for the reminder, Arien san :)

I think it was what my sister described as the Boris Becker appeal. I have the same colour of hair as him and am foreign to these girls.

Well, just giving the truth as I see it. The Poles know well that they are generally underpaid here. My wage is considered to be really good but there are so many costs in life that it's no wonder they take off for greener pastures.

Are they civilised? Well, they are well-educated people (though not as high as they think, LOL) and are keen to shake off any negative stigmas attached to them. Many live modest lives in the UK and hope for a better day in their homeland. I can vouch for that, there is something to be said for wanting to return to your homeland.

I really don't think of many Polish girls as slutty. They doll themselves up like any girls but it's generally for their own pride in their appearance rather than to attract men. Some are, some aren't slutty, like anywhere.

History / World War II - a tragic story for Poland and the World [489]

I wouldn't say instigator, Nathan, that was always gonna be the Germans and then the Russians. They were just biding their time. Poland, in opportunistic fashion, acquired territory. Such things happen in such times. They by no means were the architects of WWII.
