If your boyfriend is only teaching himself English with you as his sounding board then he isn't getting the chance to build up his confidence by speaking with others which means he's relying on you and you're getting exasperated with him - and you're showing it. Help him build up his confidence.

If he is working a lot of hours in order to support both of you then you can't complain that he's tired and may not want to go out late socially so why not organise something nice in the house, it's cheaper and it's more exclusive because it's just you and him.

If you mean child benefit then I don't see why they shouldn't either. They work and pay taxes here so yes they should get child benefit. My Polish friend and her boyfriend certainly claim for their daughter and right they should. They both work too.

I have no problem with anyone receiving benefits if there is a legitimate reason for them doing so. For example: If someone, especially during the credit crunch, finds themselves unemployed then why shouldn't they get a little bit of financial help to see them through?


I think that says it all really. I agree with szarlotka in this quote. I don't knock my pan in for fifty-odd hours a week to pay for some lazy sod who just can't be bothered getting out of bed in the morning.

You see, the thing is, you have just ASSUMED most of all of that. Believe it or not, the UK is tightening up on immigration. What's the problem with the proof of address? If your brother-in-law has a landlord they'll provide proof. Yes with Lloyds TSB you can introduce someone but you still need all the relevant proof. Just so you don't feel so victimised, I am a British citizen and I require to have proof of address. Last year I took out a new contract with a company and it took me 3 hours in an office to prove myself.

Don't bother trying to palm off stict proof policies as "being against Romanians".


Some of them make me sick too. What makes me more sick is one individual deciding a whole nation has the same mindset. Actually, more than making me sick, it makes me worried. It means you can't define between individuals.

I might try it myself. I found that recipe when looking up info on slow cookers. Needs to buy a new one... :)

You can partially use this recipe but substitute asparagus for artichoke leaves and the greaseproof papers for puff pastry.

Don't make heart shapes in the pastry make squares and monitor in the oven. I made something similar before (using asparagus though) and it was tasty. :)

It's a lot of fish and that's something I am not keen on personally. I don't know many Poles who eat a great deal of fish either. Who knows?


Yes. Steak pie - chunks of beef in a rich gravy (use ale as well) with a pastry top.

Shepherds pie - traditionally minced lamb with veg and topped in mashed potato.

Try things like steak pie, shepherds pie, toad in the hole. If they have such things. Maybe that needs to be another thread... ;)


Thanks Seanus. :) I think there is something similar in older Scottish cuisine. Maybe need to look at the Highlanders for some advice on that. Might be called Hunter's Pie...maybe, can't be sure.

I used tinned haggis. Moistened it with water, not whisky. I also thought of making a whisky sauce to go with these but didn't have time tonight. Maybe another night...

They tasted good despite the fact that they don't look that great. ;)

I think that's the key with this. He needs reassurance about that and probably a lot and I am sure you are giving him that and can continue to do so. Has he ever said to you he is worried you'll go away with someone else? I think his asking you to move some of your bits and pieces into his flat is his way at looking for some sort of commitment from you but at the same his "I guess" comment when you asked if you were official was his way at not committing too much in case you don't want the same thing.

Why not try to get away for the weekend or something and make it just time for you both, no jobs, no other friends/family around? Do a bit of talking, some "discovering". ;)

Yep. It's for the Scottish/Polish night my friend and I are having at the end of the month. szkotja2007 suggested haggis as a filling on the previous page so we thought we might as well try it. :) We know it's not really golabki but there will be the real stuff too. ;)

It's taken a few years in Edinburgh for the older generation of Poles to finally accept the new generation here. It's getting there though and I think as people settle down and make this their home they will begin to become more involved in the clubs and associations.


There does seem to be a big connection between Scots and Poles that goes back into history. There are connections between Poland and the rest of the UK but it seems Poles and Scots go "way back". :)
